NEW YORK—With 4,000 crowd
ing into St. Patrick’s Cathedral
and 2,000 gathering outside,
Solemn Requiem Mass was offer
ed for George M. Cohan, with the
Very Rev. Francis X. Shea, Vicar
for Religious of the Archdiocese,
as celebrant; the Rev. John F.
White, chaplain of the Catholic
Actors’ Guild, of which Mr. Cohan
was President, as deacon, and the
Rev. Thomas A. Donnellan, of the
Cathedral staff, as subdeacon. The
actor -playwright -producer-dancer-
singer died November 5, at the
age of 64.
Prominent among the honorary-
pallbearers were Governor Her
bert H. Lehman, former Governor
Alfred E. Smith, Postmaster Gen
eral Frank C. Walker, Governor
Robert H. Hurley of Connecticut,
Governor Joseph H. Gainor of
Rhode Island, James A. Farley,
John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and
Joseph P. Tumulty, former secre
tary to President Wilson. The list
t>f names of the other honorary
read like a who’s who of the press
and theatrical world.
During the ceremony, the
widow, Mrs.'Agnes Nolan Conan,
was attended by a nurse. Also
present were Private George M.
Cohan, Jr., son, and her three
daughters, Mrs. George Ronkin,
and Helen and Georgette Cohan.
A high-ranking Catholic naval officer, recipient of many honors, was
lost in the recent fighting in the Solomon Islands—Rear Admiral
Daniel J Callaghan, of San Francisco. He is pictured with Presi
dent Roosevelt, when he served as naval aide at the White House,
1938-41. Admiral Callaghan represented the President at the funeral
services for Cardinal Mundelein, in 1939. (N.C.W.C.)
President Roosevelt was one of
the first Cohan admirers to pre
sent his sympathies to the actor’s
widow, Mrs. Agnes Mary Cohan.
The Chief Executive sent a tele
gram, saying “a beloved figure is
lost to our national life in the
passing of your devoted husband.”
‘ He will be mourned by millions
whose lives were brightened and
whose burdens were eased by his
genius as a funmaker and as a
dispeller of gloom,” the President
added. “My heartfelt sympathy
to you and all the family.”
In 1940, Mr. Cohan was present
ed the Congressional Medal by the
President in the White House for
his “outstanding contributions to
the American spirit” which includ
ed many patriotic songs, notably
“Over There”.

War-Torn World to Immaculate Heart of Mary

NEW YORK—Broadway led the
nation in mourning George M.
Cohan, who died at his home here
after a year’s illness.
With Mr. Cohan when he died,
ending one of the most remarkable
careers in the theater of all time,
were Mrs. Agnes Nolan Cohan, his
widow, his daughters, Mrs. George
Ronkin, and Helen and Georgette
Cohan, his son, Private George M.
Cohan, Jr., and his closest friend
Gene Buck, former President of
the American Society of Compos
ers, Authors and Publishers.
A showman who breathed the
American tradition into the 40
plays and over 100 songs he wrote,
Mr. Cohan lived long enough not
only to witness his “Grand Old
Flag unfurled above American
armies in another World War, but
to know that his life captured on
the silver screen in the Hollywood
production, “Yankee Doodle Dan
dy.” was epitomized when the
premiere of the motion picture in
New York netted over $5,000,000
in War Bonds to enable modern
American soldiers to fight again
“Over There” on many fronts. He
died comforted by the fact that
he had achieved the largest box
office business in theatrical his
tory and that the receipts went to
his country
The patriotic fervor of his life
and career was signalized at his
birth, for he was born in Provi
dence. R. I . on July 4. 1878, while
firecrackers popped in celebration
of the holiday. His father and
mother. Jere and Helen Cohan,
were the barnstorming regimen of
the itinerant variety troupers of
the time. His first public appear
ance was as a child violinist and
at the age of nine he went on the
stage as a child ac-tor. Later with
his father, mother and sister. Jose
phine, he was one of the Four
Cohans, an act that became na
tionally popular.
There followed the career that
made theatrical history and gave
to the American theater tradition
some of its greatest musical and
dramatic productions.

VATICAN CITY.—His Holiness
Pope Pius XII consecreated the
war-torn world to the Imaculate
Heart of the Blessed Virgin when
he_ prayed that “peace may return
to men’s souls” and that the order
of the Kingdom of God may pre
vail.
The occasion was a discourse by
His Holiness broadcast to Portu
gal by the Vatican City radio sta
tion. It marked the culmination of
observances commemorating the
25th anniversary of the apparition
of the Blessed Virgin at Fatima.
The Holy Father spoke in Portu
guese.
Pope Pius prayed, too, for infi
dels still enveloped in the shadow
of death, for those separated from
the Church by error and dissen
sion. He prayed for those who
profess a special devotion to the
Blesesd Virgin Mary, invoking
“peace and camplete freedom for
the Holy Church of God now en
countering on all sides a flood of
neopaganism that is entirely ma
terialistic.”
Pope Pius said he was uniting
himself with his beloved spiritual
children of Portugal in praise and
thanksgiving to God for all His
Blessings. He said, too, that he
was particularly happy because
the Portuguese had associated the
commemoration of the Fatima ap
parition with his own episcopal
jubilee.
Devotion to the Blesesd Mother
and fidelity to the Pope are in
separable in the affection of most
faithful Portugal, His Holiness
continued. He recalled that Portu
gal, threatened with apparently
certain shipwreck in an hour of
tragic bewilderment and anti-
Christian and anti-national unrest,
was saved by the merciful inter
vention of the Blessed Mother, en
abling Portugal to return to its
finest traditions. Recognition is
due all the instruments of Divine
Providence, but especially the
Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Fa
ther added. He pointed out that
the peril of Communism threaten
ing 1936 was removed in time,
and that Portugal is now enjoying
the blessing of peace amidst the
desolation of war. These, Pope
Pius declared, are priceless bene
fits implying the duty of gratitude
to the Heavenly Partoness. Recent
celebrations and pilgrimages at
test to this gratitude on the part
of the Portuguese, and give assur
ance for the future if supported by
the avoidance of sin and virtuous
Catholic life. Then His Holiness
asserted, invocation of the Mother
of God will be answered' immedi
ately.
Pope Pius concluded his dis
course by solemnly imparting the
Apostolic Benediction to the Pres
ident and people of Portugal.
DEDICATION BY POPE STIRS
WORLD; HOPE FOR FUTURE OF
RELIGION IN RUSSIA NOTED
VATICAN CITY. —Particular
importance is attributed here to
the radio message which His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII broadcast to
Portugal, in which he consecrated
the Church and the world to the
Immaculate Heart of the Blessed
Virgin Mary.
This, it is pointed out, was a
solemn act comparable to that of
Pope Leo XIII in 1899, when he
consecrated mankind to the Sacred
Heart. The solemn precedent was
specifically recalled in the broad
cast to Portugal, which marked
the observance in that country of
the twenty-fifth anniversary of the
apparition of the Blessed Virgin
at Fatima.
A profound impression has been
created by the Holy Father's mov
ing appeal for peace.
It is noted that one of the
prophecies connected with the
apparition of the Blessed Virgin
at Fatima says of the present war
that it will end when humanity is
consecrated to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary.
HOPE FOR RUSSIA
The Sovereign Pontiff’s allusion
in his broadcast^ to religious con
ditions in Russia' and the hope for
futufc improvement, also left a
deep impression. Beseeching the
Blessed Mother to extend her pro
tection, Pope Pius prayed: “G'ive
peace to the peoples separated by
error and discord, and especially
to those who profess such singular
devotion to thee that no home was
ever without thy venerated icon,
today often hidden and reserved
for better days give them peace
and bring them back to the one
fold of Christ under the one and
true Shepherd.”
This passage was contained in
the conclusion of the Sovereign
Pontiff's prayer, and was not avail
able textually immediately follow
ing the broadcast.

page box, in official form, the fol
lowing announcement:
“The destructive air raids on
Italian cities have been linked by
a certain newspaper with an alleg

Mr. Myron Taylor, personal rep

United States, who, upon his re
turn to America, is said to have de

that a few bombardment on Italian
cities would suffice to break the
resistance and confidence of the
people.
“Having made inquiries, we are
in a position to state that such a
declaration is absolutely without
foundation and that Mr. Taylor
himself, interrogated personally;
has categorically denied having ut
