Annual Report Submitted
by Missionary Society
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Miss Kate
Walsh, president of the Catholic
Missionary Society of Georgia for
Home and Foreign Missions, in
submitting the twenty-third an
nual report of the Society, gave the
following summary of what had
been accomplished during the past
year:
To the officers and members of
the Catholic Missionary Society
for Home and Foreign Missions:
The first words of this report are
ones of grateful appreciation to
Our Most Reverend Bishop for his
gracious approval of our appeal for
a special collection for Missionary
work. His letter to the Pastors
sent to be read on Mission Sunday
in October met with hearty ap
proval. To the Reverend Fathers
whose encouraging words brought
such a wonderful response, our
sincere thanks are due. And to
each and every contributor goes
out our heart-felt gratitude. This
collection, planned to take the
place of our annual card party was
such a success that in future we
shall establish this as our main
source of income.
The Mailing Committee has
worked faithfully month alter
month and reports 3,103 pieces of
Catholic literature sent to isolated
members ol our Faith. Our thanks
to this committee for maintaining
this important branch of service.
The amount of tin foil collected
this year was not large enough
to warrant a sale. However, it
is still on hand, some more is
promised, and it will be sold
shortly.
Collections this year have in
creased considerably over those of
last year. This is. of course, most
gratifying.
Our affiliation with the National
Council of Catholic Women con
tinues, and we feel pride to share
in the work of this fine exponent
of Catholic activity.
A source of real regret to your
President is the lack of effort to
increase membership in the So
ciety for the Propagation of the
Faith. This society has oeen
placed by our Bishop under the
guidance of the Missionary So
ciety, and is our responsibility
This year's contribution is less
than that of last year. Shall we
all work to better this report next
year?
We wish to express our thanks
to our Most Reverend Bishop for
his encouragement and guidance,
to Mrs. R. T Serames for constant
generous help, and to the Ladies
Auxiliary of the A. C. H.. for the
ever welcome “Penny March.’’
For special gifts we wish to sin
cerely thank Father James Grady,
Miss Petra Morton, and Miss Ellen
Gilooley.
Appreciation is also expressed
to our officers, collectors, and
members and to the Savannah
newspapers for their cooperation.
CATHOLIC YOUTH
ORGANIZATION NEWS
AUGUSTA
C. Y. P. A.
The party sponsored last
month by the CYPA at the USO
for the soldiers was a big success.
Eats for the occasion were fur
nished and prepared by the mem
bers. We are indeed grateful to
Mr. Ted Gruber of the JWB-USO
who called the square dancing.
Everybody had a swell time and
are looking forward with great
interest to the next party.
A St. Patrick’s party was spon
sored by the CYPA and the USO
on Wednesday night, March 17, at
the USO hall on Ellis Street. This
party turned out to be one of the
biggest successes we have ever en
joyed. There was dancing until
about 10 o’clock. A buffet supper,
prepared by the members of the
CYPA and members of the Girls’
Service Organization was enjoyed
by everyone. During the evening
several Irish songs were sung by
Corporal Jimmy Carusso of Camp
Gordon. We were honored to have
with us tw'o of our former mem
bers who are now in the armed
forces—Bob Mahoney, who is now
with the Navy at Norfolk, and Bob
Hannon, who is stationed in Co
lumbia.
Our study club will be resumed
on Monday night, March 29. under
the direction of Father Martin
Killian, assistant pastor of St.
Mary’s-on-The-IIill. It is hoped
(hat the new Study Club will be a
big success. Arrangements have
been made to invite the men in
uniform to attend. Father Killian
states that he will do everything
possible to make this activity as
interesting as possible.
We regret very much that Fa
ther Bernard Brady has been call
ed back to Douglas. During his
three months’ stay in Augusta, Fa
ther Brady made many friends in
the CY’PA and the USO as well as
throughout the city. We thank him
sincerely for his cooperation at all
times.
We welcome to our midst Fa
ther Joseph Malloy, who is now
stationed at St. Patrick's. Although
Father Malloy has been in Augus
ta only about two weeks, he has
shown a deep interest in the ac
tivities of the club.
ATLANTA
Blessed Chanel Club
Joseph Alban, one of the latest
contributions to the armed forces
of the United States from Blessed
Chanel Club, who has joined the
Army Air Corps, was honored at
a farewell party given by his
mother.
Jimmy Moore, our president, is
another member we have lost to
the Army, and is Danny Manning,
who has been enlisted in the Army
Air Corps in Miami.
It has been necessary for the
club to elect new officers, and
Jimmy Moore has been succeeded
by Bill Hayes, as president; Peggy
Taylor has been elected vice-
president; Joan Knock, secretary
and John Cutcliff. treasurer.
A recent visitor to the club was
one of our old members, Leo
Coletti, now with the Parachute
Battalion at Fort Benning.
