WAYNESVILLE. N. C. — The
high school department of St.
John's Parochial School in Way
nesville. has just been accredited
with the North Carolina State
Board of Public Instruction. The
four-year high school has an en
rollment of 37. St. John's grammar
school, founded in 1939, has an
enrollment of 66.
A little over a year ago St.
John's Church was erected, the
first Catholic church with a resi
dent pastor in an area of 25,000
square miles. St. John's Secondary
and Elementray School is the only
Catholic school in the same area.
It is conducted by Sisters of the
Third Order of St. Francis of As
sisi.

sponsibility of carrying on the
magnificent work that is being
done to make the USO-NCCS Club
in Spartanburg a ‘home away
from home,” for the men at Camp

SAVANNAH. Ga. — April 17th
was a day of rejoicing for the Fran
ciscan Sisters of the Immaculate
Conception in Savanah. On that
day Sister Mary Hildegarde ob
served the twenty-fifth anniversary
of her Religious Profession. It was
also an occasion of great joy for
Sister Mary Stigmata and for Sis
ter Mary Timothy, who pronounc
ed the vows of poverty, chastity
and obedience, according to the
rule of St. Francis of Assis.

of the Sisters filled the chapel
which was elaborately decorated
for the occasion.
Sister Mary Hildegarde. a na
tive of Ireland, entered the Mis
sionary Franciscan Sisters on Sep
tember 8. 1915, and received the
Habit of the Order on March 25,
1916. After two years of Novitiate
training she pronounced her Vows
of Poverty, Chastity, and Obed
ience Sister Mary Hildegarde has
labored among the Colored in Sa
vannah and Augusta for years. At
present she si teaching at St.
Mary's. School.
Sisters Mary Timothy and Stig
mata are both natives of Ireland.
Both entered the Franciscan Order
on September 24. 1935, received
the Holy Habit in Rome, Italy, on
April 16. 1936. and pronounced
their first Vows in Newton. Massa
chusetts on April' 17, 1938. At pres
ent Sister Mary Timothy is teach
ing at St. Anthony's Mission, and
Sister Mary Stigmata at St. Mary’s
School.
CLOSING EXERCISES
ST. VINCENT’S, SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Graduation
exercises of St. Vincent’s
Academy will be held on the after
noon of June l. at the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist, the Most Rev.
Gerald P. O'Hara, Bishop of Sa-
vannah-Atlanta, presiding.
Dionne Quintuplets
Launch Five Vessels
at U. S. Shipyard

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Dionne
Quintuplets and members of their
family attended Solemn Mass in
the seclusion of the chapel of the
Most Rev. William - P. ©’Connor,
Bishop of Superior, following their
arrival here to christen five ocean
freighters at the request of the
U. S. Government.
Wearing red coats, red hats, red
shoes and white anklets, the quin
tuplets were accompanied by Ca
nadian provincial policemen, Mich
igan and Wisconsin highway pa
trolmen, and U. S. Marines.
The party paused for a short in
terval downstairs at the Bishop’s
home and was greeted in French
by the Most Rev. C. L. Nelligati,
Bishop of Pembroke, now a Briga
dier General in the Chaplain Corps
of the Canadian Army, and by
their host. Bishop O’Connor.
Accompanying the quintuplets
were the other Dionne children.
Victor, Daniel, Rose, Pauline, and
their parents.
Bishop Nelligan was the celeb
rant of the Mass, the Very Rev.
Joseph Unnabring was deacon, and
tile Rev. John Rivard was sub
deacon.
Also present were Bishop O’Con
nor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. C. J. Owens,
and the Rev. Leo Block.
Nuns and members of the Bish
op's household waited outside the
chapel to greet the quintuplets. A
group of children from St. Joseph’s
Orphanage also was present.
On May 9, the quintuplets
launched five ocean freighters in
the yard of Walter Butler, Ship
builders. Inc., setting a new world’s
record for multiple ship launch
ings. the ships were launched in
order by Annette, Cecile. Emilie,
Marie, and Yvonne. The’ ships are
valued at $1,000,000.
The day was bright and sunny,
and the crowd was estimated at
18.000.
The program lasted four hours.
Admiral Emory S. Land, head of
the Maritime Commission, praised
the contributions of the Mid-West
to the nation’s war effort. His
words were echoed by Rear Ad
miral Howard I. Vickery. The quin
tuplets appeared for ten minutes
on 30-minute world-wide over the
radio broadcast BBC.
Communion Breakfast
Held in Spartanburg
SPARTANBURG, S. C.—More
than 250 soldiers, members of the
Holy Name Society at Camp Croft,
joined with local members of
the Society in observance of
Mothers’ Day attending a break
fast at the Cleveland Hotel after
approaching Holy Communion at
a Mass celebrated at the Church
of St. Paul the Apostle.
Private Maurice Breen, former
ly of Somerville. Mass., was toast
master at the breakfast, during
which a musical program was
rendered by Pfc James Flynn, of
Newark, N. J.. with Miss Louis
Collins as accompanist.
Mrs. Leonard Becker, of Spar
tanburg. was honored by being
named housj mother of the USO-
NCCS Club. The Rev. Francis O.
Ferri, pastor of St. Paul’s Church,
in presenting a gift to Mrs. Becker,
praised her for her untiring ef
fort on behalf of the club.
Tribute was also paid Mrs. John
CuPen, of New York City, mother
of Corporal John Cullen, of Camp
Croft. Mrs. Cullen has four sons
in the armed forces.
Speakers at the breakfast in
cluded Cpl. Sidney Romero and
Pvt. Peter Clotherty, and honored
guests included the Rev. Emile
Lang, S. J., chaplain of the 34th
Battalion: the Rev. Sareph Zeitz,
O. F. M., chaplain of the 39th
Battalion; Colonel Gerald J.
Greene, post adjutant: Col. Rich
ard W. Copeland, chief special ser
vice officer, and Col. Otto Probst,
camp inspector.
HIS EXCELLENCY the Most
Rev. Amleto Giovanni Cicognani,
Apostolic Delegate to the United
States, observed privately, on
April 23, the tenth anniversary
of his Episcopal Consecration.
