volunteers from St. Joseph’s parish
to make donations of blood to the
Red Cross blood bank. The pro
ject has the enthusiastic support
of the Rev. Harold A. Gaudin,
S. J.. pastor of St. Joseph’s
Church, Father Gaudin, himself,
being one of the first to make a
contribution of blood. The re
sponse from the parishioncts has
been most gratifying.

Pictured above is the eight-room residence at 126 East Amelia
Street, Orangeburg, S. C., which has been purchased by the Redemp-
torist Fathers, and been renovated, remodeled and furnished to serve
as the Convent of the Oblate Sisters of Providence who will come to
Orangeburg in September at the invitation of the Most Rev. Emmet
M. Walsh, D. D., Bishop of Charleston, and sponsored by the Very Rev.
Cornelius Hoffman. C. SS. R., Vice-Provincial of the Richmond Vice-
ProVince of the Redemptorist Fathers. The three Oblate Sisters of
Providence, who will come to Orangeburg this fall, from their Mother-
house in Baltimore, will teach Christian doctrine, sewing, cooking and
other domestic arts in the Colored parish of Christ the King, where
the Rev. Thomas J. Gilhooly. C. SS .R.. is pastor. The Oblate Sis
ters are not strangers to the Diocese of Charleston, as they have con
ducted the Immaculate Conception School for Colored children, in
Charleston, for some years.

Clergy Changes in
Diocese of Raleigh

RALEIGH, N. C. — The Most
Rev. Eugene J. McGuinness. D. D.,
Bishop of Raleigh, has announced
the following changes of clergy in
the Diocese of Raleigh:
The Rev. Francis J. Gorham
pastor of St. Mary’s Church. Golds
boro, has' entered the Chaplains'
Corps of the United States Army.
The Rev. Lawrence Newman,
formerly assistant pastor of St.
Mary's Church, Wilmington, will
replace Father Gorham in Golds
boro.
The Rev. George Lynch, newly
ordained for the Diocese of
Raleigh, has been assigned for the
summer to Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Church, Rocky Mount. He
will return to the Catholic Univer
sity in September.

was held in Columbia, May 22.
Mrs. G. Leo Lowry, of Charlest-
ton, Diocesan president, conducted
the session at which Mrs. J. Albert
von Dohlen, of Charleston, was
named state chairman of press
and publicity, and Mrs. J. Carroll
Magarahan. of Greenville, was ap
pointed chairman of a special
“War Activities Committee”-
Mrs. Carroll Johnson, assistant
director of the USO-NCCS Club in
Spartanburg, was a guest at the
meeting.

RALEIGH, N. C., —The Most
Rev. Eugene J. McGuinness, D. D„
Bishop of Raleigh, has announced
the appointment of the Rev. Law
rence Newman, who has been as
sistant to the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Ar
thur R. Freeman, P. A., pastor of
St. Patrick’s Church. Charlotte,
as administrator of St. Mary’s
Church, Goldsboro, N. C.
Father Newman succeeds the
Rev. Francis Gorham, who has
been released from parochial work
to enter the chaplains’ corps of
the United States Army.
A native of New Bern, Father
Newman was ordained to the
priesthood by Bishop McGuiness
at the Sacred Heart Cathedral
here, on May 12, 1940. After serv
ing for some months v as assistant
pastor of St. Therese’s Church.
Wilson, Father Newman went to
Charlotte in January 1941.
He has been especially active
in youth work, having founded the
Catholic Youth Organization, the
Girl Scout Troop, and Boy Scout
groups at O’Donoghue School in
Charlotte. He also served as acting
Catholic chaplain at Morris Field
for several months.

YOT, S. J., Filipino Jesuit, the
only member of the Philippine
Mission, or of the Maryland-New
York Jesuit Province stationed in
Spain during the past year, died
on June 3.
