A Maguire. S. M., of the faculty of Marist College, celebrated the 25th .anniversary of his ordination on May 23, offering a jubilee Mass at the Sacred Heart Church. Father Maguire celebrated his -jubilee Mass assisted by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph F. Croke. with the Rev. Thomas L. Finn, deacon; the Rev. A. A. Walls, S. M., sub- beacon, and the Rev. M. A. Collins, S. M., master of ceremonies. The Rev. Francis P. Conlon, O. M. I., of Douglas, delivered the sermon. Immediately after the Mass a re ception was held at the rectory of the Sacred Heart Church. L. J IIENRY. AUGUSTA CELEBRATES 45 YEARS WITH REMINGTON RAND AUGUSTA, Ga.—Luke J. Henry, Augusta representative of the Remington Rand Company, cele brated on June 9 the 45th an niversary of his connection with that company. One of the pioneer typewriter dealers of the South, Mr. Henry is a member of St. Mary's-on-The- Silver Jubilee as a Priest Celebrated in Atlanta by Rev. Henry Hayes, S. M., (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA, Ga.—The Rev. Hen ry T. Hayes, S M., formerly of At lanta, and at present pastor of St. Paul’s Church, Nampa, Idaho, cel ebrated the twenty-fifth anniver sary of his ordination, on June 20, at the Sacred Heart Church here. The Rev. W. M. Hanlon, S. M., and the Rev. Marion Perry, S. M., were deacon and subdeacon, with Clar ence Biggers, a nephew of Father Hayes, as master of ceremonies. Father Hayes is the son of the late H. T. Hayes, city license in spector for 15 years. He is the first student of Marist College to enter the priesthood. Following the Mass a reception was held in the rectory, and later in the day members of Father Hayes’ family held a reunion at the home of Mrs. John H. Dillard. Attending were Father Hayes’ sis ters, Mrs. C. A. Mallinson, and Mrs. Dillard, of Atlanta; Mrs. Anna Galhouse, Miami, and Mrs. *J. F. Duggan, Dallas, and a brother, C. Joseph Hayes, Louisville, Ky. Army Chaplain REV. EDWARD BISS, O. S. B. Among the late group of Cath olic chaplains who graduated from the U. S. Army Chaplains’ School at Harvard University, was Father Edward Biss, O. S. B., of Belmont Abbey. Atlanta K. of C. Elect Officers (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA, Ga.—At the meeting of Atlanta Council, No. 660, Knights of Columbus, held on June 2, William J. McAlpin was re elected grand knight. Other offi cers elected to serve for the year beginning July 1 were: Grover Heyser , deputy grand knight; Dwight Hollow ell, chancellor; Jack T. Langley, record®** John M- Harrison, treasurer; Herbert Ru dolph, warden; Thomas J. Gilmore, advocate; C. F. Porter-, inside guard; Max Bips and Paul Elsas, outside guards. Henry C. Taylor was elected trustee, to serve with James F. Davey and Brian F. O'Brien, whose terms have not yet expired. George T. Flynt was appointed financial secretary and E. D. Trotti, lecturer. PATROLMAN JAMES J GAL VIN, of the Atlanta Police Depart ment, graduated recently front the National Police Academy in Wash ington. D. C. A native of Boston, Mr. Galvin has three sisters and a brother who are members of reli gious orders. A member of Atlanta Council. Knights of Columbia. he played with the Atlanta. Southern League, baseball team a few jears ago. EVIDENCE GUILD SPEAKERS RETURN TO NORTH CAROLINA (Special to The Bulletin) WAYNESVILLE. N. C. — The Catholic Evidence Guild of Rtf ary College, River Forest, 111., wiil again deliver open air addressc. in four towns of St- John's parish this, summer, during the four weeks be ginning June 13.. and ending July 11. Meetings will be held at Sylva Bryson City, Franklin and High lands. The meetings will be held each night for a week in each town, the addresses to be given on iTie~~main street with the help of a public address system. Talks will be given on various religious subject; and a question and answer period will be conducted. Members of the Catholic Evi dence Guild who will conduct the meetings this year are Miss Lu- cille Burke, Miss Betty Ryan, and Miss Betty Constance Woods. They will be accompanied by Sister M. Aurelia and Sister M. William, of the Dominican Sisters of Si-sina- wa. Wisconsin, who conduct Rosary College. MILITARY MASS AT ATLANTA INFIRMARY ATLANTA, Ga- — The annual outdoor Military Mass was cele brated this year on the lawn of St. Joseph's Infirmary with the Rev. Thomas L. Finn, pastor of St. Thomas More Church, Decatur, as celebrant; the Rev. M. A. Ccllins, S. M., of Sacred Heart Church, deacon; the Rev. Bede Lightner; O. S- B., of Belmont Abbey, sub deacon, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph E. Moylan, rector of the Ca thedral af Christ the King, master of ceremonies. Father Collins de livered the sermon. Cadets from Marist College, in uniform, and about 800 school children from parochial schools in Atlanta at tended. with about the same num ber of adults, attended the im pressive service. C—Under the auspices of the North Carolina Catholic Laymen’s Retreat Associa tion, the annual Retreat for lay men will be held at Belmont Abbey, from Friday night, July 16, to Sunday afternoon, July 18, with the Rev. John F. Renehan, C. SS. R., pastor of Holy Re deemer Church, Newton Grove, as Retreatmaster. Father Renehan conducted the 1942 Retreat at Belmont Abbey and will return this year at the unanimous request of the retreatants. Reservations may now be made by addressing John Eck, president of the North Carofina Catholic Laymens Retreat Association, Box 1064, Gastonia. N. C- Those who cannot attend the opening on Fri day evening, may join anytime up to Saturday night. The cost to retreatants occupy ing a bed in general dormitory will be $7.50, and for those occupying a bed in a private room or in a room with several others, $8 50. This charge covers aisv six meals, group photograph, and other ex penses. Officers of the North Carolina Catholic Laymens Retreat Asso ciation, in addition to Mr. Eck, are Geo. L. Heifer, Gas tonia, secretary- Owing to food rationing and other war conditions, there will be no Retreat in Raleigh this year. ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH MOUNTAIN CITY, N. C„ TO MARK CENTENNIAL (Special to The Bulletin) BELMONT. N. C.—A hundred years ago, when every Mass that was offered in western North Car- olna was celebrated upon a table, a piano, or a sideboard, a group of Irishmen assembled to build a little church, St. Joseph's Church, at Mountain Island, in Gaston County. The joy these men felt on the occasion of the first Mass in 1843 is expressed by the inscription above the church: “Habemus Al- tare,” “We Have An Altar.” After the establishment of Bel mont Abbey, parish activites cen tered there, and Ct. Joseph’s Church was not used for decades, except on special occasions. Since January, 1942, however, Mass has been said in the church every Sunday, the Rev. Charles Kastner, O. S. B., being in charge of the parish. On June 30. in commemoration of the centennial, a Pontifical High Mass will be celebrated in St. Jo seph's Church by the Rt. Rev. Vin cent G. Taylor, O. S. B.r Abbot- Ordinary of Belmont. The sermon at the Mass will be delivered by Uie Rt. Rev. Msgr. Arthur R. Free man, P. A.. Atlanta Branch to Sponsor Communion Breakfast on June 30 (Special to The Bulletin) vATLANTA, Ga. — Estes Do- remus, president of the Atlanta Branch of the Catholic Laymen’s Association of Georgia, has an nounced that the annual meeting of the branch will be held on Sun day. June 27. Members of the Laymen's Asso ciation in Atlanta will receive Holy Communion in a body at the 8:30 o'clock Mass, at the Sacred Heart Church, after which breakfast will be served in the dining hall of the Sacred Heart parochial school. It is expected that more than four hundred will attend. Special invitations have been extended to the clergy of the city, and to His Excellency the Most Rev. Gerald P. O'Hara, Bishop of Savannah-At- lanta. Because of a conflict with date of a previous engagement, Bishop O’Hara wiil not be able to attend, but wall be represented by the Very Rev. Msgr. James J. Grady, Chancellor of the Diocese of Sa- vannah-Atlanta. CHARLESTON CATHOLIC WOMEN ELECT OFFICERS CHARLESTON, S. Belmont Abbey College Commencement Exercises BELMONT, N. C. — The Right Rev. Vincent G. Taylor. O. S. B., presided at the sixty-fifth annual commencement of Belmont Abbey College, held on May 23, and in the Abbey Cathedral “where a Solemn Mass was celebrated by the Very Rev. Joseph Tobin. O. S. B., Prior of Belmont Abbey. The baccalaureate sermon was deliver ed by the Very Rev. Dr. W. D. O'Leary, S. J., president of Spring Hill College, Mobile, Ala. At the conclusion of the Mas? the graduation exercises were held in the gymnasium. Benedict Ber ry, of Greensboro, N. C., delivered the salutatory address and Joseph Haverty, of Jacksonville, 51a.. was valedictorian. The Abbot Vincent Award, for the outstanding student in the preparatory school, was awarded to William Braun, one of the high school graduates, from Jackson ville. In the college department, the medal for Religion was award ed Joseph Haverty. In the high school, the medal for Religion was awarded Herbert Bon Durant, of Charlotte. There were twelve graduates from the Junior College, with twenty-one graduates from the high school. BELMONT ABBEY NOTES The Ven. Brother Justin Long, O. S. B., pronounced his simple triennial vows in the Abbey Cath edral on May 26, at a Mass cele brated by Abbot Vincent. The Rev. Sebastian Doris. O. S. B. t conducted a short retreat for the students of Holy Trintiv High School, Ocean View, Norfolk. Va., during May. The Rev. Bede Lightner. O. S. B.. rector of Belmont Abbey Col lege. was the commencement speaker at the graduation exer cises of Holy Trinity School, Nor folk, Va. During the week of May 24. the monks of Belmont Abbey made their annual retreat, with the Rev. Benedict Broshe ban. O. S. B.. of St. Anselm's Priory. Washington, D. C„ as retreatmaster. Young men who arc reporting to St. Vincent Archabbey as novices for Belmont Abbey are: Lawrence Bryan, Harrisonburg, Va.. Jack Chess. Belmont Abbey Col lege began its first summer ses sion, a fourteen-week term of double-hour courses, open to high school and freshman college boys. By this arrangements of double hours to each course, students can earn a complete unit in each sub ject successfully carried. Paul Neale, former principal of Belmont High School is one the faculty tot the summer, conducting classes nt English. , This summer will find several members of the faculty of Belmont Abbey College doing post-graduate study.
