KARAM GANNEM DIES IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mrs. Anne Abraham Gannem. mother of Sa vannah's first victim of World War II. died on June 7, funeral services being held from the Sacred Heart Church. Her son, Staff Sergeant George Gannem. was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. A native of Elaman Sida, Le- bonn, Mrs. Gannem is .survived by her husband. Karem Gannem; three sons, Anthony K. Gannem, Savannah; Nazar Gannem, U. S. Navy. Norfolk, and Michael Gan nem. U. S. Army Air Force, stat ioned in Tennessee; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Saraf. Savannah: a bro ther. Ganam A. Karam. Manchest er, N. H., and nine grandchildren. MRS. ANNIE RYAN DIES IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH. Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Mrs. Annie Hermes Ryan, widow of W. T. Ryan, who died June 7. were held from the Cathe dral of St. John the Baptist. Mrs. Ryan, a native of Savan nah. is survived by six sons, Wil liam T. Ryan. Charleston: Aloysius Ryan, Ira J. Ryan, Robert F. Ryan, Vestus J. Ryan, and Leo V. Ryan: four daughters, Mrs. A. O. Ivey, Mrs. J. Leroy Cole, Miss Gertrude Ryan, all of Savannah, and Mrs. H. B. Hoffman. Philadelphia, and fourteen grandchildren. FRANK AMMATUNA DIES IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH. Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Frank Ammatuna, who died June 4." were held from the Cathedral of St. John the Rap- tist. A native of Italy, Mr. Amma tuna had been a resident of Sa vannah for the past forty years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carmelina Ammatuna: a daughter, Miss Nina Ammatuna; a son, George Ammatuna. and a sister, Mrs. Santa Cela, all of Savannah. CRESCENT BRIDE The USO Club operated by the National Catholic Community Ser vice in Augusta is expanding its program and increasing in popu larity under the direct on of Crescent Bride, its new director. Mr. Bride has as his aides. Miss Pauline Martin, assistant director. Miss Anne Markwalter, club sec retary, and a splendid group of volunteer workers. NEPHEW OF SAVANNAH PRIEST IS EULOGIZED SAVANNAH. Ga. — A recent copy of “The Tariff,” a magazine issued by the Traffic Club of New ark, N. J.. devotes a part of its cover design and a lead story to First Lieut. Mark B. Connor, nephew of the Rev. Norbe-t Me- Gcwsn. O. S. B.. of Savannah, who lost his life in action in the European theatre, December 20, 1942. Father Norbert, it is recalled, went to New Jersey some time ago to offer a Mass of Requiem at a memorial service for his nephew. MACON. Ga —The 1943 election of officers of Macon Council No. 925, Knights of Columbus, result ed in the promotion of Deputy Grand Knight Martin J. Callag han. Jr., to succeed Francis T.- Cassidy as grand knight, the re- election of several officers, and election of several to hold office for the first time. Mr. Cassidy was given a post on the board of trustees, while Charles C. McCur- ran became deputy grand knight. Re-elected officers were A. A. Benedetto, chancellor; John J. McCreary* advocate: Frank L. Mc Donough, recorder; Martin J. Cal laghan. treasurer, and James Modena .outer guard. New officers are Don C. Chest- niitt, warden: Hillman B. Tanner, inner guard, and Charles L. Adams, Sr., and John F. McBrear-' ty, to fill unexpired terms as trus tees. Awarded Silver Star SACRED HEART SCHOOL GRADUATES ENTERTAINED SAVANNAH. Ga. — With the Very Rev. Boniface Bauer, O. S. B., pastor of the Sacred Heart Church as host, members of the graduating class of the Sacred Heart parochial school were tendered a breakfast in the dining room of the school on June 2. Honored guests at the breakfast were the Rev. Aloysius Wachter. O. S. B„ the Rev. Peter Trizzino. O. S. R., the Rev. Gilbert Fuchs, O. S. B., the Rev. Michael Donna, and Miss Margaret Steeg. Participating in the program, with Father Boniface, were Rich ard Dooley. Mary Ann Kavanaugh, Edward Killorin. Margaret Oetgen. Ann Ott. Helen Marie Whalen, Shirley Kramer and Mary Ernes tine Morel. CAPTAIN GARY Announcement has been made that Captain Albert von Kamp Gary, U. S. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Gary, of Augusta, has been awarded the silver star for gallantry in action. Captain Gary lead a patrol which was oh .Guadalcanal for several months and took part in the ground defense of Midway island during the Japanese bombing of that out post. A member of St. Mary’s-on- the-Hill parish in Augusta. Cap tain Gary was recently married in that church to Miss Mary Hill, al so a member of that parish. Thomas W. AMERICAN LEGION AWARD GOES TO STUDENT OF MACON PAROCHIAL SCHOOL MACON. Ga. — The American Legion School award made an nually by Joseph N. Nell, Jr.. Post, American Legion, was presented to William Joanis. son of Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Joanis. by Past Com mander Arthur Lewis, Command er Charles L. Chapman. Viee-Com- mander Ben K. Sharp and Past Commander John J. McCreary, at the closing exercises of St. Jo seph's parochial school. The trophy has been awarded for 20 years to seventh grade school boys in Ma con who have shown outstanding qualities of leadership. ~ scholar ship. courage and moral character. MACON, Ga.—Funeral services for Thomas William Duffy, of James, were conducted June 2 at St. Joseph's Church by Rev. James E. King, of Athens. Present in the sanctuary during the requim Mass were the Rev. Harold A. Gaudin. S. J., pastor of St. Joseph’s and the Rev. John Toomey, of Milledgeville. Son of James and Joanna Tracy Dnxfy, he was born August 15, 1355, in Augusta, and early in life moved to James, in Jones County. H# represented that county in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1896 to 1900, and was president of the' Jones County Board of Education for 25 years, during which time he led and won the campaign for the consolidation of the schools and free bus transportation for school children. For fifty years he was Georgia Railroad agent, and had been a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers since 1882. He was recognized by the national office of that organization as an outstanding member, serving his own Division as chairman for many years and representing it in the national convention as delegate: his pioneer work done on his own division was note worthy. and even after his retire ment from active railroad service his interest and support con tinued. He was a charter member of Macon Council, Knights of Colum bus, of which council he was an honorary life member. He was married to Miss Ida Warren Mitchell \t Clinton, who died several years ago. He is sur vived by three sons. Thomas W. Duffy, Jr., and Robert Emmet Duffy, both of James, and Paul Duffy, of Macon; five daughters, Mrs. Robert H. Kingman, and Carl G. Cain.
