Awards Diplomas to
Its First Graduates
AUGUSTA, Ga. — At impressive
exercises held June 2 in the Music
Hall of the Municipal Auditorium,
the Boys’ Catholic High School,
established here in 1939, by the
Marist Brothers, graduated its first
class, His Excellency the Most Rev.
Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D., Bishop
of Savannah-Atlanta presenting di
plomas to the members of class of
1943, Maurice Eugene Baber,
Peter Anthony Franklin, Archie
Louis Gleason, John Louis Lemon,
Thomas Allen Maxwell, Matthew
William Mulherin, John Anthony
Nevin, George Fornum Smith, Ed
ward Goodrich Weigle, Thomas
Ellis Wheeler and Nathan Francis
Widener.
The exercises opened with the
singing of the National Anthem,
led by Joseph Brittingham, ac
companied by Augustine Punaro,
violinist and Miss Agnes Gouley,
pianist. The opening prayer was
offered by the Rev. Thomas A.
Brennan, pastor of St. Mary’s-on-
The-Hill Church, followed by a
salutatory by John Anthony Nevin,
and the valedictory by Thomas
Ellis Wheeler.
Members of the graduating class
were addressed by Bishop O’Hara
and by S. D. Copeland, Superin
tendent of Schools and Secretary
of the Board of Education of Rich
mond County. Announcement of
honors and awards was made by
Brother Benedict Henry, F. M. S.,
principal, and the closing prayer
was offered by the Rev. J. E.
O’Donohoe, S. J., pastor of the
Sacred Heart Church.
Among those seated upon the
stage were the Rev. Joseph Malloy,
administrator of St. Patrick’s
Church, Councilman Timothy J.
Kearns, representing the Hon. W.
D. Page, Mayor of Augusta; John
Chesser, president of the B. C. H.
S. Athletic Association, and Mrs.
Charles Weigle, president of the
Mothers’ Club, Noel Schweers act
ed as master of ceremonies, with
Neil Callahan as page.
At the conclusion of the pro
gram, solemn Benediction of the
Blessed Sacrament was given at St.
Patrick’s Church.
GRADUATION EXERCISES
AT MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
AUGUSTA, Ga. — At joint ex
ercises held at Mount St. Joseph
Academy on the afternoon of June
2, the Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara,
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, pre
sented certificates of graduation to
17 grammar grade pupils and di
plomas to two graduates of the
high school.
The high school graduates were
Miss Mary Grose and Miss Jane
Barrett. Those completing the
eighth grade of the elementary

FUNERAL IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga.— Funeral ser
vices for Hugh Michael Harkins,
who died at his home in Mountain
View on June 1, were held from
the Immaculate Conception
Church, the Rev. James E. Doherty
officiating.
Mr. Harkins is survived by his
wife; three daughters, Mrs. H. L.
Bryant, Miami, Fla., Mrs. Geneva
Garrison, Mountain View, and Mrs.
W. L. McNair, Atlanta; three sons,
James E. Harkins, Macon, John
A. Harkins, Atlanta, and W. H.
Harkins, of Mountain View; a sis

DIES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga. — Funeral ser
vices for Mrs. W. F. Brandt, the
former Miss Pearl Puckett, who
died May 28, were held from St.
Anthony’s Church, the Rt. Rev.
Msgr. Joseph F. Croke officiating.
Mrs. Brandt was the wife of
Judge W. F. Brandt, and the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. A.
Puckett, of Cleveland.

Sister Mary Regina Joseph
Celebrates Silver Jubilee

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Sister Mary
Regina Joseph, R. S. M., celebrat
ed the silver jubilee of her pro
fession as a Sister of Mercy at St.
Mary’s Home on May 29, at a Mass
celebrated by the Rev. Nicholas
Quinlan, chaplain of St. Mary’s.
The Rev. Robert Brennan, O. S.
B., delivered the sermon, the title
of which was “The Life of the
Religious.” Father Robert declared
“The religious life is spent for God,
therefore the religious look for no
glory here below, but on an oc
casion such-as this, all the religious
come together to celebrate with
thanksgiving and joy because one
has given twenty-five years of
faithful service to the Master.”
Other members of the clergy
present in the sanctuary were the
Rev. Norbert McGpwan, # 0. S. B.,
the Rev. Daniel J. Bourke, the
Rev. Adolph Gall, S. M. A., the
Rev. John Hayes, S. M. A., the Rev.
Eugene Kearney, C S. V., and the
Rev. George Daly.
Congratulatory messages were
received by Sister Mary Regina
Joseph from the Most Rev. Gerald
P. O’Hara, Bishop of Savannah-
Atlanta, and Mother Veronica,
Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy.
Miss Kate Cannon and John
Griggs, aunt and nephew of Sister
Mary Regina Joseph, came from
New York to attend the celebra
tion.
Sister Mary Regina Joseph has
spent a quarter of a century in
convents in Georgia, having served
in Columbus, Macon, Atlanta and
Augusta, as well as in Savannah.
The Mass was followed by
Solemn Benediction, given by the
Very Rev. Boniface Bauer, O. S.
B., with the Rev. Gustave Obrecht,
S. M. A., as deacon, and the Rev.
James Conlin as subdeacon.
FORMAL DANCE HELD AT
SAVANNAH USO-NCCS
SAVANNAH, Ga. — A formal
dance, sponsored by the Credit
Women’s Club, was given at the
USO-NCCS Club on Liberty Street
on June 19, music being furnished
by the popular Marine Band from
Parris Island.
Miss Iola Mae Hall was chair
man of the committee in charge,
with Miss Katherine Barrett as
co-chairman, and the committee
included Mrs. Stella Christian,
Mrs. Hortense Wright, Mrs. Ni-
wana King, Miss Virginia Thorpe,
and Miss Frieda Kramer.
Refreshments were served by a
committee headed by Mrs. T. J.
Dowling, and including Mrs. Wil
liam Leonard, Mrs. J. J. Sullivan,
Mrs. W. A. Dawson, Mrs. Robert
Jiran, Mrs. Fred Holtz, Mrs. J. H.
Michelson. The chaperones were
Mrs. William E. Hines, Mrs. R. J.
Welsh, Mrs. D. J. Colvin, Mrs.
Jenny Bohan, Miss Kate Cromley,
and members of the Women’s
Credit Club. Mrs. Harry T. Wilson
was hospitality chairman.

cred Heart School held its annual
meeting on June 1, and the follow
ing officers were elected to serve
for the coming year; Mrs. Leo E.

vices. Mrs. Chevier was given a
vote of thanks for what she had
accomplished during the year as
Child Welfare chairman. Letters
of thanks were addressed to Mr.
and Mrs. Claude W. Blanchard for
the use of their plantation near
Mount Pleasant for the annual
picnic for the graduating class,
and to A. E. Peirano for individual
gifts.
Mrs. Wm. E. Flathman, Jr., an
nounced that the summer round
up had been discontinued for the
duration, but asked parents to
have their children who are to be
gin school, examined by their pri
vate physicians.
At the close of the business ses
sion, the Rev. Henry Wolfe, pastor
of Sacred Heart Church, thanked
the retiring officers for the coop
eration given him, and extended
good wishes to the new officers for
the comng year.

MARKS ANNIVERSARY
OF HIS ORDINATION
SAVANNAH, Ga — On June 14,
the Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. James Mc
Namara, rector of the Cathedral
of St. John the Baptist, celebrated
the 19th anniversary of his ordin
ation to the priesthood by the
Most Rev. Michael J. Keyes, S. M.,
who was Bishop of Savannah in
1924.
In observance of the anniver
sary, Monsignor McNamara was
guest of honor at a family dinner
at the home of his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. P. J. McNamara.
The day was also the anniversary
of the ordination of the Rev.
Harold Barr, now serving as a
chaplain with the United States
Army in the Pacific area.
FATHER GEORGE DIETZ
OBSERVES JUBILEE
WARD, S. C. — On May 16, the
Rev. George J. Dietz, pastor of the
famed “Mine Crek Mission” in
Saluda County, observed the twen
ty-fifth anniversary of his ordina
tion to the priesthood by celebrat
ing Mass at St. William’s Church
here. The choir was composed of
children from St. William’s School.
In his sermon. Father Dietz re
called incidents connected with his
more than twenty years of priest
ly service in this section.
At noon, the members of gather
ed for a barbecue dinner, served
in rustic style, with Father Dietz as
the guest of honor.

ed a program consisting of songs,
recitations, and presentation,
speeches by a member of each
class at St. William’s School as
tokens of respect and devotion
were tendered the jubilarian, who
also received other gifts from

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The
rectory of the Sacred Heart
Church was the scene of a recept
ion on the evening of May 26, hon
oring the Most Rev. Gerald P.
O’Hara, Bishop of Savannah-At
lanta, who had administered the
Sacrament of Confirmation at the
services held in the Sacred Heart
Church earlier in the day.
The reception was attended by
members of the parish and their
friends, including members of the
WAVES, SPARS, and the Women’s
Reserve of the Marine Corps; in
training at the Georgia State Col
lege for Women.
Among out-of-town guests were
the Rev. Harold Gaudin, S. J., and
the Rev. Michael McNally, S. J., of
Macon; the Rev. Nicholas Frizelle,
of Dublin, and the - Rev. Angei
Pengson, of Augusta. Included
