C., were married on February 8th,
at the Sacred Heart Church, the
Rev. J. E. O’Donohoe, S. J., offi
ciating.
Miss Clara Colter attended her
sister as maid of honor; Miss
Helen Hoover, of Charlotte, sister
of the groom, and Miss Georgia
Mulherin were bridesmaids; Wal
ter L. Hoover, Jr., of Baltimore,
brother of the groom, was best
man, and Harold Newcomer, Wash
inglon, D. C., and Dick Mark-
waiter were ushers.
During the ceremony and the
Nuptial Mass which followed, ap
propriate music was rendered by
Mrs. Hugh Kinehley, violinist; Miss
Theresa Punaro and Angelo Pu-
naro, vocalists, with Miss Alice
Doyle at the organ.
Lieutenant Hoover is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee
Hoover, of Charlotte.

tion, were married recently at St.
Francis Xavier Church, the Rev.
Philip A. Hasson, S. M.. officiat
ing.
The bride was the first of the
WAVES in Brunswick to be mar
ried with a Nuptial Mass, while
the bridegroom made his first Holy
Communion on his wedding day.
Following the ceremony a wed
ding breakfast was given in honor
of the young couple at the USO
Club operated here by the Wom
en’s Division of the National Ca
tholic Community Service, with
Miss Dorothy Westbrook as direc
tor. The club house was attrac
tively decorated for the occasion
with flowers, palms and ferns.
The bride, who entered with
Captain A. L. Danis, commanding
officer of the Naval Air Station,
was attended by Storekeeper 2|c
Rita Bergan as maid of honor, and
by Miss Agnes Martin as brides
maid. Stanley J. Smith, SK l|c,
was the best man and Antonio
Leto, S l]c, was the groomsman.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Of interest
here is the announcement of the
marriage of Miss Margaret Loy-
less Mell, daughter of Mrs. Patrick
Hues Mell, of Wayne, Philadelphia,
Pa., to Lieut. Prince Hodgson
Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
H. Gordon, of Miami, on January
24, in the rectory of St. Katherine
of Siena Church, Wayne, the Rev.
Charles Devlin officiating.
Mrs. Gordon, a graduate of
Marymount, Tarrytown-on-Hud-
son, N.Y., is a granddaughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Loy-
less, of Augusta, and a grand
daughter also of Mrs. Charles
Mell, Sr., of Augusta, and the late
Mr. Mell.

Mrs. Solomon is tlie daughter

Goldsboro. Sergeant Solomon is

Mother Receives Son’s Medals
Mrs. W. S. Fowler, mother of Lieutenant William If. Fowler, now a
prisoner of war in Germany, received the Distinguished Flying Cross,
the Air Medal, and three Oak Leaf Clusters for her son, on January 30,
at an impressive ceremony held in St. Anthony’s Church, Atlanta, with
the Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, presid
ing. The officer presenting the awards to Mrs. Fowler is Captain.

ATLANTA, Ga.—At an impres
sive patriotic ceremony, held on
January 30, at St. Anthony’s
Church, Mrs. Wm. S. Fowler re
ceived for her son, Lieutenant
William H. Fowler, now a prisoner
of war in Germany, the Distin
guished Flying Cross, the Air
Medal, and three Oak Leaf
Clusters.
The presentation was made by
Captain George Ennis, who was
assisted by Lieutenant George A.
Prussing, both of the Atlanta Army
Base, and was followed by Ponti
fical Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament, given by the Most Rev.
Gex-ald P. O’Hara, Bishop of Sa-
vannah-Atlanla, with the Right
Rev. MSgr. Joseph F. Croke, pas
tor of St. Anthony’s Church, as
assistant pi-iest; Captain John
White, a priest of the Diocese of
Wichita, and a U. S. Army.-'Chap-
lain,. deacon; the Rev. William A.
Maguii’e, S. M., of the Sacred
Heart Church, subdeacon, and the
Rev. John A. Morris, of St. Thomas
Moore Chui'ch, Decatur, master of
ceremonies.
Clergy present in the sanctuary
were the Vei'y Rev. William Loner-
gan, S. M., pastor of the Sacred
Heax't Chui'ch; the Rev. Joseph R.
Smith, pastor of the Immaculate
Conception Church; the Rev.
Thomas L. Finn, pastor of St.
Thomas More Church; the Rev.
H. A. Schonhardt, the Rev. An
drew A. Walls, S. M., the Rev.
Philip Dagneau, S. M., the Rev.
F. Marion Perry, S. M., the Rev.
Michael A. Collins, S. M., the
Rev. Joseph E. Doherty, the Rev.
Joseph Barry, O. M. I., and the
Rev. John J. O’Shea.
The ceromny was most inspiring
and impi-essive. The American
Flag was flown from a standard to
the right of the sanctuary, in
which the elaborately decorated
altars were brilliantly illuminated
with the gleaming light of many
candles.
Mrs. Fowler knelt before the
altar while the citations wei-e read,
and then arose to receive from
Captain Ennis, the medals, which
had been blessed by Bishop
O’Hara.
At the conclusion of the presen
tation eei'emony, Bishop O’Hara
addressed the congregation which
filled the church, stressing the fact
that Catholic schools teach well
the lessons of love of country, and
that pupils of Catholic schools are
taught to pei-form every patriotic
duty well and honorably. Lieu
tenant Fowler was a former stu
dent at St. Anthony’s parochial
school.
Monsignor Croke then presented
a framed plaque upon which were
inscribed the names of the one
hundred and fifty-two members of
St. Anthony’s parish now serving
in the ai'tned foi'ces of the United
States. This was also blessed by
Bishop O’Hara.
Lieutenant Fowlei" received the
Distinguished Flying Cross for
twenty bombardment missions
over enemy occupied Europe and
for destroying at least one enemy
aii'craft. The Air Medal was award
ed for five separate combat mis
sions; and each of the Oak Leaf
Clusters indicated five missions
after the Air Medal had been
merited.
The young officer was naviga
tor-gunner on the Flying Forti’ess
“Blitz-Fiitz”, which was brought
down by enemy lire over Germany
dui’ing (he Muensler raid last Oc
tober. His pai'ents, Mr. and Mrs.
William II. Fowler, have since
heard from him several times.
Lieutenant Fowler enlisted in
the Air Force in June, 1942, and
received his basic training at Max
well Field, Ala., and his pi'e-flight
and advanced training as a naviga
tor at Selman Field, Monroe, La.
He went overseas in May, 1943.
After attending St. Anthony’s
school, Lieutenant Fowler attend
ed Tech High and the Georgia
School of Technology. He wns
employed in the engineering de
partment of the Southern Bell
Telephone and Telegraph Com
pany prior to his enlistment.
He has a brother who is also in

Birthday of USO

MACON, Ga.—The third anni-
versax'y of the USO was celebrated
hex'e on February 6 by a large rep
resentation of servicemen and civi
lians assembled at the auditor
ium. Against a background of
flags of the United Nations, a pro
gram was presented by soldiers
fi’om Camp Wheeler, Cochran
Field, Herbert Smai't Field and
Robins Field.
The prog-ram opened with a con
cert by an Army band from Camp
Wheeler, and at its conclusion open
house was held at all of the local
USO clubs.
Dr. Frank Jones, chairman of
the local USO council, welcomed
the guests and introduced Col. C.
G. Hammond and Capt. Vollmer
Kirk, who paid tribute to the
USO.

and Khaki,’’ Cochran Field pro
duction, was presented as a

Sgt. George Sbynosky. Capt.
Wayne Schriiviner, Cochran Field,
acted as master of ceremonies.
Junior hostesses served as ushe-
l’ettes.
VARIETY SHOW AT
MACON NCOS CLUB
Vocal solos, guitar selections
and a community sing wei'e in
cluded on the program of a variety
show presented at the Macon USO-
NCCS Club on February 6. Those
who took part in the pi-ogram were
Miss Alma Luckert, vocalist, Gos-
ton Freeney, child singer; Pvt.
Johnny Smith, guitar player, and
Mrs. Ann Elliott, who led the
community singers. Mrs. Cheney
Brantley, Mrs. Marx Holloway and
Herbert Harrington were the ac
companists.

Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians held its annual meet
ing on February 2, and elected
