AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mrs. Ella
Boeckman, director of the Women’s
Division pf the USO-NCCS, was
the guest speaker at the meeting
of the Augusta Deanery of the
National Council of Catholic Wo
men held on February 6, at Mount
St. Joseph auditorium.
Mrs. Boeckman told members of
the Deanery Council of the various
club activities at the club for wo
men in the armed forces and of
the personalized service which is
rendered by the Women’s Division
of the National Catholic Communi
ty Service as a member agency of
the United Service Organizations.
It was decided at the meeting
that a study club would meet on
the first Tuesday evening of each
month at the Women's Division
USO-NCCS Club, at which time in
teresting articles from the maga
zine, Catholic Action, would be
discussed and reviewed.
Mrs. A. William Lucky, Jr., pres
ident of the Deanery Council, who
presided, announced that the Sa-
vannah-Atlanta Diocesan conven
tion of the N. C. C. W. would be
held in Augusta during the latter-
part of April at the Bon Air Hotel.
A feature of the meeting was a
panel discussion on parliamentary
precedure, led by Mrs. M J. Car-
rigan, with Mrs. Norman Boat
wright, Mrs. F. H. Roberts, Mrs.
Charles Stulb, Miss Eleanor Ben
nett, Miss Marcella O’Keefe and
Mrs. Marion Stulb participating,
and Mrs. W. J. Mulherin acting as
chairman.
Benediction was given in the
convent chapel after the meeting
by the Very Rev. Thomas A.
Brennan.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — J. Francis
Kelly, former director of the USO
NCCS Club on Liberty Street, has
been transferred to the regional
office in Atlanta as assistant reg
ional supervisor for the National
Catholic Community Service, mem
ber agency of the USO.
Mr. Kelly, a graduate of Spring
Hill College, had previously gradu
ated from the Marist School for
Boys and Benedictine Military
Academy here. He played football
during and throughout his sholar,-
tic career. He served as director of
the USO-NCCS Club here for the
last two years, after having com
pleted an extensive course of train
ing in Washington.
Novena Services at
Savannah Cathedral

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Very
Rev, Frederick Gilbert, O. M. I.,
of the Oblate Fathers Mission
House in Douglas, conducted a
Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes
at the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist, beginning on February 3
and closing with a Solemn Proces
sion of the Blessed Sacrament on
the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes,
February 11.
Father Gilbert’s sermon topics
during the Novena were: “Lourdes,
Bureau of Missing Persons,” “Solv
ing the Unemployed Problem,”
"Modern Miracles,” “Unrationed
Food,” “The Finger of God is
Here,” “Massive Action,” “Water
of Lourdes,” "At Home at Lour
des,” and “The Rosary at Lour
des.’

GEORGE LAROE NAMED
DIRECTOR IN SAVANNAH
George LaRoe, formerly direc
tor of the USO-NCCS Club in
Hinesville, has been appointed to
succed Mr. Kelly as director of
the club in Savannah.
Mr. LaRoe, a native of Provid
ence, R. I., came to Georgia last
summer as assistant director of
the USO-NCCS Club in Augusta,
later being appointed as director
of the club in Hinesville. He is a
graduate of Brown University, and
before entering USO work, spent
eleven years in Italy as foreign
representative of the National City
Bank of New York and the Stand
ard Oil Company. He also worked
in Canada, France, Spain and the
West Indies, and has traveled ex
tensively in the Far East.

Frank L. McDonough has been
appointed director of the USO-
NCCS Club in Hinesville to suc
ceed Mr. LaRoe. He has been as
sociated director of the USO-NCCS
Club in Macon since April, 1942.
State Secretary of the Knights of
Columbus of Georgia, he was at
one time athletic director at Bates-
burg High School, Batesburg, S.
C. lie is a graduate of the Univer
sity of Connecticut.

JANUARY MEETING

ATLANTA, Ga. — Report was
made to the January meeting of
the Parent-Teacher Association of
the Immaculate Conception School
that the school had entered whole
heartedly into the city-wide cam
paign to collect waste paper and
that Mrs. II. H. Brandon had of
fered a cash prize to the class that
brought in the largest amount of
paper.
Pupils of the school will present
an Irish minstrel show on March
19 at the Fulton High School Audi
torium. Mrs. David Azar heads the
committee of mothers who will

gram.
Besides their activity in P.-T. A.
work, the mothers are taking part
in other parish functions. Mrs.
Brandon is chairman of the War
Service Committee of the parish,
and twice each month a group of
the members of the P.-T. A. meet
to sew for Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Free Cancer Home.

ATHENS, Ga.—The National
Catholic Community Service, a
member agency of the United Ser
vice Organizations, opened a new
club for service men in Athens,
on January 29, in the parish house
of St. Joseph’s Church.
Approximately six hundred ca-
. dets of the Navy Pre-flight School
at the University of Georgia, and
about two hundred soldiers from
the A. S. T. P., attended St.
Joseph's Church.
A lull program of recreation, as
well as a spiritual program, for
the men in uniform is being out
lined. There will be dances, en
tertainments of various kinds,
breakfasts, discussion groups and
other activities at the club. Books,
stationery, games, religious arti
cles and pamphlets will be fur
nished the service men.
The Rev. James E. King, pastor
of St. Joseph’s Church, will be the
moderator of the club, and the lo
cal NCCS committee will be head
ed by Robert Arthur. Members
of the parish, naval officers and
members of the Newman Club at
the University of Georgia will co
operate in the operation of the
club.
The first floor' has been reno
vated to make it suitable lor club
rooms, while retaining its home
like atmosphere. The club will
he open daily and Sunday lo ser
vice men, and stationery, maga
zines, a library, games and music
will be available at all times.
Wednesday nights will be devoted
to entertainments for officers and
their wives, and (here will be
dances for enlisted men each Sat
urday night. Special programs lo
afford a variety of entertainment
will be arranged on other nights.
Junior hostesses, under the di
rection of Mrs. Sarah McFarland,
will be present on Saturdays and
Sundays, while members of the
St. Joseph parish council of the
National Council of Catholic Wo
men will serve as chaperones.
The- men’s committee includes

POPE’S RELIEF EFFORTS
DIRECTED TO SUFFERING
POPULATION OF ROME
VATICAN CITY. — The efforts
of His Holiness Pope Pius XII,
which constantly have been direct
ed toward the alleviation of suf
fering caused by the war, are now
being directed also toward the
population of Rome, whose situa
tion is causing the Holy Father
serious concern.
Due to grave transportation dif
ficulties affecting the food sup
ply, His Holiness has placed at the
disposition of the civil authorities
seven large trailer trucks, which
are now in service and helping l<^
relieve essential needs.
The Papal Villa of Castel C.an-
dolfo has been opened as a refuge
for the civilian population of Al-
bano and other surrounding vil
lages, who have been forced to
abandon their homes with the ap
proach of armed forces. Every
thing possible is being done to
minimize inconveniences atten
dant upon the sojourn of these
civilians within the Papal Villa.

HEADS STAFF OF ST. JOSEPH’S
HOSPITAL IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Dr. Harry
V. Righton was elected president
of the staff of St. Joseph's Hos
pital at the annual meeting of the
staff, with Dr. Robert Lee Oliver
being named vice-president. The
meeting followed a dinner given
in honor of members of the hos
pital staff by the Sisters of Mercy, close.
BRIDGE TOURNAMENT AT
COLUMBUS USO CLUB
COLUMBUS, Ga.— The Ninth
Street USO Club has inaugurated
a progressive bridge night. All
soldiers who are bridge fans, and
their wives and friends are in
vited lo participate.
The general plan is to have a
table prize each night for the
highest, and of course, the lowest
score. These scores will be re
corded and tabulated at I he end
of each month when there will be
a grand prize offered for the
highest score of the month, and
the lowest score of the month.
In connection with the bridge
tournament, a qualified instruc
tor will assist in conducting spe
cial classes for beginners and those
who would like a refresher course
in contract or auction bridge.
The Lawson Field team is lead
ing in the basketball league, with
the season now approaching its
