NCCW HOLDS MEETING
BUY WAR BONDS, STAMPS

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A resolu
tion promising all possible assist
ance and cooperation to the Chath
am County Defense Committee in
its effort to solve the war prob
lems of youth was passed by the
Savannah Deanery of the.National
Council of Catholic Women at its
meeting on February p.
The resolution was adopted after
a talk on juvenile delinquency by
the Very Rev. Msgr. James J.
Grady, Chancellor of the Diocese
of Savannah-Atlanta.
Col. F. W. Alstaetler, of the Of
fice of Price Administration, was
heard in an instructive talk on the
accomplishments of the commis
sion. The Deanery went on record
to cooperate in any way and to
respect ceiling prices and avoid in
flation.
Mrs. William J. McAlpin, of At
lanta, president of the Savannah-
Atlanta Diocesan Council of the
N. C. C. W., attended the meeting
and spoke on the importance of the
work being done by the Catholic
women of Georgia and the need of
full reports by affiliated organiza
tions in the Diocesan Council.
Splendid reports were submitted
by the various affiliated organiza
tions. ttie outstanding report being
that from St. Vincent Academy on
the Jeep Campaign which closed
last December. The school sold
$24,895.70 worth of War Bonds and
stamps, exceeding a quota of $6,-
000 more than four times.
Mrs. Charles F. Powers, chair
man of the ways and means com
mittee, announced that a benefit
card party would be held on Easter
Monday at the Catholic Center.
During the afternoon Mrs. Paul
Maggioni sang a group of songs,
with Mrs. Albion Gruber accomp
anying. The meeting followed a
luncheon at the Hotel De Soto in
honor of Mrs. McAlpin, the Di
ocesan Council president, and Mrs.
Jack Leamy, president, of the At
lanta Deanery.
Died in Actions
Chaplain Arthur C. Lcnaghan,
Captain, U S. A., priest of the
Diocese of Fall River, Mass., who
died of wounds received in action,
January 7, while serving with the
Fifth Army in Italy. He had only
recently received a Legion of Mer
it citation tor bravery. Father
Lenaghan,- who was formally sta
tioned at Holy Name Church, New
Bedford, Mass, Is the nineteenth
Catholic Chaplain to die while
serving with the U. S. Army
Chaplain Corps In World War II.

BOY SCOUT COUNCIL
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Most
Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D.D,
J.U.D., Bishop of Savannah-Atlan-
ta, was the principal speaker at the
annual dinner of the Coastal Em
pire Council, Boy Scouts of Am
erica, held here on the evening of
January 20.
Macon USO-NCOS Observes
President’s Birthday

MACON, Ga.—About two dozen
soldiers whose birthdays came in
January were guests of the USO
Club operated here by the National
Catholic Community Service, at a
birthday party, jointly sponsored
by the NCCS and Macon Council,
Knights of Columbus, headed by
Martin J. Callaghan, Jr, as grand
knight.
The event was also a President's
Birthday Ball since during the in
termission for refreshments the
work 6f the Warm Springs Founda
tion was brought to the attention
of the guests, most, of whom were
from distant states. A few statistics
on the number of patients bene
fited and the amount of funds
which are derived by Warm
Springs from the annual observa
tion of the President’s birthday
were read.
Games enjoyed during the even
ing included a "Who Am I?” con
test and a true or false quiz pro
gram.
The war activities committee of
the K, of C. who cooperated in
cluded Mr. Callaghan, John J.
McCreary, and Charles J. Kearney.
Assisting in entertaining and serv
ing were Mrs. II. P. Wrigley, Mrs.
L. L. McDaniel, Mrs. J. P. Me-
Goldrick, Mrs. John J. McCreary
and a number of junior hostesses.
BRIDGE LUNCHEON AT
SAVANNAH USO CLUB

Earnest was hostess at a bridge
luncheon given by the Women’s
Division of the USO-NCCS on Feb
ruary 3. Bridge instructions were
given during the morning by Mrs.
James Keating and the luncheon

mittee in charge, with Mrs. John
P. McDonough, Mrs. Charles e*
