LIEUTENANT SHERIDAN

MACON Ga., — Second Lieuten
ant Philip J. Sheridan, of Macon,
a pilot in the U. S. Army Air
Forces, has been listed as missing
in action since a mission over Ger
man territory on February 22, ac
cording to a notice from the War
Department to his relatives here.
Lieutenant Sheridan, the young
est son of Mrs. Alma Kennington
Sheridan and the late Edward A.
Sheridan, was commissioned June
30, 1943, at Seymour Army Air
Field, Seymour, Ind., after enter
ing military service in January,
1942, and serving at Jefferson Bar
racks, Mo., and Chanute Field,
111. He has been on overseas duty
since November, 1943.
A native of Macon, Lieutenant
Sheridan was educated at St.
Joseph’s Parochial School, Lanier
High School and Mercer Univer
sity in Macon, and.graduated from
Spring Hill College, Mobile, Ala.
He is a member of the Sham
rock Club, the Catholic Youth Or
ganization of St. Joseph's parish
here, and of Macon Council, No.
925, Knights of Columbus, of which
his father was one of the organiz
ers, a charter member, and a past
grand knight. At the time he en
tered the service, Lieutenant
Sheridan was credit manager for
the R. A. McCord Motor Company
in Macon.

at Pensacola Church
During Holy Week
WASHINGTON, D. C. — Mem
bers of the Naval establishment
at Pensacola, will have an oppor
tunity during Holy Week of hear
ing one of the outstanding orators
of Catholic University of America,
Washington, D. C., give the ser
mons in St. Michael’s Catholic
Church. He is the Rev. Patrick J.
O’Connor, assistant professor of
sacred eloquence, who also is as
sistant director of the Preacher’s
Institute, which is conducted each
summer at the Washington Catho
lic institution.
Formerly a priest of the Savan-
nah-Atlanta diocese who did par-
ish work there before coming to
Catholic University, Father O’Con
nor is a graduate of the Ameri-
an Academy of Dramatic Art; pro-
lessor of public speaking in the
Basselin Foundation of Catholic
University; procurator of the Cath
olic Sisters College and former
Dean of Men of Catholic Univer
sity. He prepared for the priest
hood at St. Mary’s Seminary in
Baltimore. He is regarded as one
of the most engaging preachers
and orators; has been the St. Pat
rick’s Day preacher on a number
of occasions and has appeared sev
eral times on the “Church of the
Air” radio program.
Father O’Connor recorded the
Sunday gospels last year, and they
have proved of great assistance to
parish priests. More recently he
recorded the poem “The Hound of
Heaven” by Francis Thompson for
the National Catholic Sound Ser
vice Specialists, and this recording
is now being used in class room
studies of English literature. He
comes of good Irish stock, his late
father, P. J. O’Connor, while serv
ing as national President of the
Ancient Order of Hibernians, hav
ing the distinction of presenting
to the Catholic University of Am
erica the endowment of $50,000 for
the Gaelic Chair.
