Lauds Work of Sisters at Cancer Home
ATLANTA, Ga., —In connec
tion with the observance of (he
fifth anniversary of the dedica
tion of Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Free Cancer Home, con
ducted in Atlanta by the Sisters
of St. Rose di Lima, Morgan
Blake, whose column is a daily
feature of the editorial pages
of The Atlanta Journal, paid a
beautiful tribute to the members
of the Religious Order founded
by Mother Alphonsa, the daugh
ter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, not
ed American novelist.
The Bulletin is pleased to
quote Mr. Blake’s comment in
its entirety, as follows:
This coming Sunday—March 5th
—Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Free Cancer Home will celebrate
its fifth anniversary in Atlanta.
During these five years the noble
women have cared for 572 patients,
of which 540 were Protestants, 24
Catholics and 8 Jewish.
A great challenge through the
ages has been Cain’s famous ques
tion of God “Am I my brother’s
keeper?” And no organization of
mercy answers it more emphati
cally in the affirmative than the
Catholic Sisters of this cancer
home.
There are only two qualifications
for entry into this home. The pati
ent must have an incurable cancer
and must be destitute.
And then these gentle sweet
servants of Christ devote them
selves to making the remaining
months of the patient’s life as
comfortable and serene as possi
ble.
When Christ departed from this
earth he left behind the Holy
Spirit, the Third Person of the
Trinity to be our Comforter and
Guide. I am sure that the Holy
Spirit spends a good part of His
time in this cancer home. For in
this place are people Christ loved
best—those who minister in his
name, and those who are minister
ed to.
Here is selfless service at its
best and noblest. Here is what He
meant when He said “In as much as
ye do it unto the least of these
ye do it unto me.” Here is what
He meant by the Charity that is
greater than Faith and Hope.
Are you inclined, my friends, to
sympathize with women like these
who have served all earthly ties to
labour for the Master by washing
the sores of cancer afflicted peo
ple?
Then save your sympathy. For
such women as these have realized
to the fullest the “abundant life”
and the “peace that passeth un
derstanding” that Christ promised.
They know what happiness really
is. Compared to such women most
of us are just “4-F” Christians.

Nuns representing a dozen religious orders work in the Vatican Office of Information for War
Prisoners. Here they volunteer to carry on the great amount of clerical and typing work necessary in com
piling lists of war prisoners and refugees and handle the 2,000,000 messages that have passed through the
office, from prisoners of war to their families in many lands.—(N. C. W. C.)
