JEAN CHARLOT MURALS
UNVEILED AT GEORGIA
SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM
(Special to (he Bulletin)
ATHENS, Ga.—The Jean Char
iot murals, sponsored by The At
lanta Journal and the University
of Georgia, were dedicated at the
Henry Grady School of Journalism
on March 24.
John E. Drury, dean of the
School of Journalism, presided at
the exercises at which the speak
ers were John Pasehall, editor of
The Atlanta Journal; Gustav von
Groshvitz, artist from Middletown,
Conn, and President Harmon
Caldwell, who accepted them on
behalf of the University.
Jean Chariot, who painted the
murals, also spoke, partly in
Spanish, for the benefit of the
six South American journalists
who are visiting the University to
take part in a conference on Inter-
American affairs.
One of the murals portrays the
landing of the Spaniards in North
America, the other shows Ameri
can paratroopers landing in Sicily.
Jean Chariot, the artist who
painted the murals in Athens, was
at one time amateur flyweight box
ing and savate champion of Paris.
At the age of 18 he got into World
War I and became a lieutenant
in the French Foreign Legion with
two troops of Arabs under his
command.
He is the artist who draws the
little stags for the publishing firm
of Sheed and Ward, who did the
jackets of “Fish on Friday” and
"You’d Better Come Quietly”,
and who illustrated “Damien, the
Leper", and "Pageant of the
Popes”.
However, Jean Chariot has a
more substantial claim to fame.
James W. Lane, celebrated art
critic, in his book, “Masters in
Modern Art,” names Chariot as
one of the nine most prominent
modern painters.
With several awards for wood-
cuts and sculptures, after serving
in Germany with the Army of
Occupation he remained there to
study the work of Matthias Grune-
wald, noted 16th century colorist,
and then went to Mexico to be
come a leader in revolutionizing
the art of that country.
About Jean Chariot’s own per
sonality, a remark passed at an
afternoon tea in Athens around
Christmas time tells the whole
story. The speaker was the wife
of a very prominent American
writer. She looked over at Char
iot and said to her neighbor: “You
know, if I thought Jean’s religion
would help make me into the kind
of wonderful person Jean is, I’d
embrace it.”
Jean Chariot and his wife, Zoh-
man, an American girl who studied
art in England, and who resembles
Jennifer Jones, star of the film
version of “The Song of Berna
dette”, have two children, three-
year-old Anne Marie and two-year-
old Johnny.
Chariot is the author of ‘‘Art
from the Mayans to Disney”, and
the co-author of several other
, books or art and history.
