(Special to The Bulletin)
CONYERS, Ga. — Members of
the Order of Cistercians of the
Strict Observance who came to
Rockdale County last month to es
tablish the Monastery of Our Lady
of the Holy Ghost, on the farm
property which they had acquired
near here, are now settling down to
the monastic routine after rapidly
converting farm buildings into
monastic use.
„ While setting out seedlings of
their first crops of wheat and
corn, plans are already being
made to arrange their temporary
quarters to accommodate a com
munity of forty, to which the orig
inal group will be increased by oth
er Trappists who will come from
the Abbey of Our Lady of Geth-
semani in Kentucky.
Cuttings from the vineyards at
Gethsemani will soop be sent to
the new monastery, and which
will enable the Trappists in Geor
gia to grow grapes from which al
tar wines will be made. Hives pf
bees will also be sent from Geth
semani, and the monks will be able
to obtain bees-wax to make can
dles for use in the sanctuary.
It is expected that the next few
years will see a wonderful devel
opment of this new Trappist foun
dation, and to give the readers of
The Bulletin some idea of what
the Monastery of Our Lady of the
Ghost will be some day, a num
ber of pictures of the Abbey of
Gethsemani accompany this article.
While the Trappist monks are
sowing the seeds of the crops
which are to be harvested on their
farm in this state, they are also
sowing the seeds of prayer and
penance which will bring forth
spiritual fruit in abundance.

the music. On Easter Sunday aft
ernoon the Naval Air Station band,
under the direction of Chief John
Pizclla, gave an outdoor concert,
which was followed by a style pa
rade featuring Easter bonnets dat
ing from the "Gay 90’s” to the
present day. Seaman Daniel Seig-
ler, of the Naval Air Station on St.
Simon’s Island, acted as master of

with dates, and the entertainment
program included games, "Jitter
bug” proms, and a delicious buf
fet supper.

cey McCalla, Mrs. E. B. Abel, Mrs.

GETHSEMANI ABBEY—Front Exterior View
Nestling among the knolls of
Nelson County, and surrounded by
the very earliest landmarks of
Catholicity in Kentucky, is to be
found the Abbey of Our Lady of
Gethsemani, the home of the Cis
tercians of the Strict Observance,
from which a group of Monk Lay
Brothers came to establish a Trap
pist monastery near Conyers,
Georgia. Humble in its origin,
when it was established in 1848,
surrounded by virgin forests and
almost barren land, the community
at Gethsemani soon set about to
replace the original log structures
with adequate buildings. While
plainness of construction combin
ed with stately size gives a befit
ting air of gravity to the monastic
buildings, tending to eliminate the
desire for vain ostentation and use
less ornamentation, which would
be out of harmony with the spirit
of severe simplicity so much loved
by the early Cistercians, there is
not wanting in them a certain
beauty, whose fascinating charm
increases as the lessons they are
meant to teach are appreciated. In
Georgia, as in Kentucky, the Trap
pists will begin humbly, but the
accompanying views of Gethsem
ani Abbey in Kentucky will give
some idea of what the Abbey of the
Holy Ghost in Georgia will be one
day.
