(Special to The Bulletin)
COLUMBIA, S. C.—The only
Catholic church in a mill village
in the South.
St. Patrick’s Church fills a
much needed want in Columbia.
For years, there has been about
one hundred members of St.
Peter’s who have lived and work
ed in the mill section of Olympia
and Granby Mills. For the most
part, these were loyal to St.
Peter’s. They came there to Mass
and received the Sacraments there
and were buried from there. How
ever .time marched on and it had
been the wish of Father Thomas
Hegarty, then pastor of St.
Peter’s to erect a small church in
that section because it was a dif
ficulty for those who lived in the
mill section to come to Mass on
Sundays.
Under Bishop William T. Rus
sell .then Bishop of Charleston,
St. Frances de Sales Church was
started in 1920. That put the
building of a church in Olympia
village out of the question for a
time. Father Martin Murphy was
assistant to Father Hegarty in
1921 and knew of the necessity of
such a church. Hence, he never
forgot about it, and in 1939, when
pastor of St. 'Peter’s, realizing that
the Uifte was ripe for it, he called
a meeting down in Olympia village
in the home of George Senn. No
mrney was available at that time,
but it was decided to look for a
lot where the church could be
built. Finally, through the good
ness of Mr. Hamrick, the present
lot was secured. The Southeast
ern Construction Company of
Charlotte, N. C., was contacted,
plans were drawn up and work
was started in June, 1939. The
church is completely furnished, ac
commodates about two hundred
people and is considered one of the
most beautiful of our smaller
churches. It was dedicated on
September 24, 1939.
When the church was being
built a Miss Sara Vaughan was
dying in Limerick, Ireland. She
had been in America about 25
years, where through hard work
she accumulated some money.
Once while going to Ireland on a
visit sjie met an Irish priest on
the boat, who told her about the
conditions of the church and the
lack of priests in the South. She I
never forgot what he said. In far |
away Limerick, Ireland, she re- j
membered South Carolina and its j
few Catholics and left part of her I
money to erect a church in South
Carolina. That money, through her
relatives in New York and the
generosity of His Exceilency,
Bishop Emmet M. Walsh,
partly paid for St. Patrick’s
Church. The Extension
Society of Chicago also gave $2,-
000 in memory of Patrick Long, al
so of Limerick,. Ireland! so there
was a very good reason to dedicate
the church to the Apostle of Ire
land, St. Patrick. There were also
friends and relatives of Father Mur
phy, in Boston ’and Washington,
who were most generous and do
nated the furnishings, as also did
Bishop Walsh.
Today, new hope comes lo Olym
pia village through Catholic edu
cation. Every school child of school
age but one comes to St. Peter’s
School. These people realize the
importance of a good Catholic
education.
It is safe to say that one day St.
Patrick’s in Olympia will become
a flourishing parish. The founda
tion is being cai-efully laid now.
Its slogan is “Every Catholic child
in a Catholic School.” These chil
dren arc the hope and security for
the time to come.
