Serving in Nation’s Armed Forces

SUMTER, S. C.—With more
than one-fifth of its members serv
ing in the nation’s armed forces,
St. Anne’s parish in Sumter has
every reason to be proud of its
contribution to the war effort.
One member of the palish, Maj.
John P. Gerald, has given “the
full measure of devotion,” having
been killed in action in the Amer
ican assault on Aachen, Germany.
Major Gerald was a graduate
of the U. S. Military Academy at
West Point, and his death on the
field of battle ended a military
career of exceptional brilliance.
He was the son of Mrs. Anne Cos
grove Gerald and the late Robert
W. Gerald.
The Honor Roll of St. Anne’s
Church lists with the name of the
heroic officer who gave his life
for his country .the names of these

and craft work, record-making and
other recreation over the week
end.

First Year’s Operation

DILLON, S. C.—St. Eugene Hos
pital, which is conducted here by
th« Sisters of Mary, of St. Louis,
gave 8.923 days of hospital care
to the 1,169 patients who were ad
mitted to the hospital during 1944.
During the year 150 infants were
born in the hospital, including
three sets of twins. A total of 199
surgical operations were perform
ed, 55 blood transfusi&ns were
given, 586 X-rays taken, 41 frac
tures reduced, 105 emergency
•cases were treated and 8,131 la
boratory tests of various kinds
were made.
As St. Eugene’s Hospital was
opened on November 17, 1943, last
year was its first full year of op
eration, and the Sisters of Mary
are deeply grateful for the co-op
eration and support which made
the hospital's first year a success
ful and mutually beneficial one.
