Bishops War Relief and Emergency Fund
Appeal to Be Launched on Laetare Sunday
Servant of God
WASHINGTON.—With the fifth
annual appeal for the Bishop’s
War Relief and Emergency Fund
set in most dioceses of the coun
try for Laetare Sunday, March
11, announcement was made at
national headquarters here that
last year’s appeal by the Bishop’s
Committee for funds to continue
its world-wide works of charity
netted a total of $1,508,522.
The funds to be raised will make
it possible to continue a vast glob
al program of spiritual and tem
poral service of Christian charity
without let-up, and if possible, to
expand it in accordance with the
ever increasing needs of war vic
tims in many lands.
Less than one-half of one per
cent of the total sum raised for
the Bishops’ Relief Fund is used
for administrative purposes, it was
pointed out.
The report on the distribution
of the money raised last year re
vealed that almost one-half of the
total, 47 per cent, was dispensed
through His Holiness Pope Pius
XII.
Religious articles, in addition to
personal services of a wide va
riety dispensed through world-
circling agencies of the Vatican,
Information Service through
which more than seven million
messages have been transmitted
between war prisoners and civil
refugees and their families at
home, particularly in those coun
tries where normal postal service
has been interrupted.
The Chaplains’ Aid Association
and the Military Ordinariate in
the United States received about’
18 per cent of the 1944 fund for
necessary supplementary spiritin''
care of Catholics in our armed
forces. Thusands of Mass kits.
Benediction sets, vestments, can
dles, New Testaments, rosaries and
missals have been supplied on re
quest to chaplains and service met
and those of other Allied nation
in such important centers a
Rome. Naples, Florence, Cairo
and Fiji Islands, as well as in thi
country are enabled through this
contribution from the Bishops'
Fund to provide special religiou'
facilities, as novenas and retreat-
for Catholic service men and wo
men.
The Bishops’ Committee allocat
ed five per cent of the fund to the
maintenance of Montezuma Semi
nary at Las Vegas, N. M.. where
350 young Mexicans are being pre
pared for the priesthood, since the
anti-religious laws in Mexico do
not allowed the operation of re
ligious seminaries in that country.
