SAVANNAH, Ga.—Completing
next month a quarter-century of
priestly service, His Excellency
the Most Reverend Gerald P
O’Hara, D. D„ J. U. D„ Bishop of
Savannah-Atlanta, will, celebrate
the twenty-fifth anniversary of his
ordination to the priesthood.
Formal celebration of His Excel
lency's Silver Jubilee will be held
in Savannah on April 5,- and in
Atlanta, on April 10.
In Savannah, Bishop O’Hara will
offer a Solemn Pontifical Mass of
Thanksgiving at the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist, with the
Most Rev. Edwin V. Byrne; D. D
Archbishop of Santa Fe, New
Mexico, delivering the sermon.
In Atlanta, at the Cathedral of
Christ the King, Bishop O'Hara
will offer a Solemn Pontifical Mass
of Thanksgiving, with the Most
Rev. Emmet M. Walsh, D. D.,
Bishop of Charleston, delivering
the sermon.

5:00 o’clock in the afternoon there
will be a reception for Religious,
in the Catholic Young People’s
Association Building. At 7:30 in
the evening a reception in the U.
S. O. Auditorium of St. Mary’s
parish, and at 8:30 in the evening.

Columbus Home.
Following the Mass in Atlanta,
winch will be celebrated at 10:00
o clock, there will be a luncheon
for the clergy at the Anslev Hotel
A reception for Religious will be
. held in the. assembly room of the
. Sacred Heart parish, at 3:30
o’clock in the afternoon. There will
be a reception in the auditorium
of Our Lady of Lourdes Colored
Mission at 6:30 in the evening. In
the Civic Room, of the Ansley
Hotel, at 8:00 o’clock in the eve
ning, there will be a public re
ception, at which all of Bishop
O'Hara’s friends will have an op
portunity to extend their congrat
ulations and good wishes to him.
On the morning of April II, at
9:30 o’clock, Bishop O'Hara will
offer a Solemn Pontifical Mass at
the Immaculate Conception
Church in Atlanta, <or the chil
dren of the city.
Bishop O’Hara was born in
Green Ridge, near Scranton, Pa..
May 4, 1895, the eldest son of
Dr. and Mrs. Patrick J. O’Hara,
his mother having been Miss Mar
garet Carney before her marriage
Baptized at St. Paul’s Church in
Green Ridge, the future Bishop
spent his first year of school at
St. Cecelia’s Academy, Scranton
and when he was six years old, the
family moved tq West Phila
delphia, he attended, the parochial
school of - Our Lady of Sorrows
Church. Here he received his first
Holy Communion and was con
firmed. From the parish school
he went to St. Joseph’s High
School, conducted by the Jesuit
Fathers, graduating in 1911.
In the fall of that year he enter
ed the Archdiocesan Seminary of
St. Charles Borromeo at Over-
brook, where he completed the
four year preparatory course in
three years. He had a two-year
course in philosophy and two years
of a theological course, when his
splendid scholastic record led to
his selection to go to Rome to
complete his course in theology.
In Rome, the young seminarian
was at the Pontifical Roman Major
Seminary for three years, being
ordained before the end of his
course, on April 3, 1920, bv His

The following year he was
awarded the degree „of Doctor of
Divinity and he then entered the
Law School of the Roman Major
Seminary. At the end of another
thice years of study, he received
the degree of J. U. D . doctor of
both Canon and Civil Law a rare
distinction. «•
Having been awarded three Ro
man doctorates, a most unusual*
achievement, the young priest re-

1924, to take his place, modestly,
among the clergy *of the Arch
diocese of Philadelphia. How
ever, his scholastic attainments in
Rome had attracted the attention

delphia, who made him his secre
tary.
He performed his duties with
such whole-hearted thoroughness
that new and greater responsibili
ties were placed on him. He was
named a judge of the matrimonial
court. He was active in the lay
mens retreat movement. His
facility as a speaker in English,
Italian and French, and his con
vincing eloquence made him in
demand for solemn occasions. He
was an authority of note on cere
mony and ritual.
Five years after his return from
Rome, he was named Titular
Bishop of Heliopolis and Auxiliary
Bishop of Philadelphia.
At the time of his consecration
Bishop O’Hara was the youngest
Bishop in the United States, and
possibly in the world. He was
raised to the Episcopacy at the
Cathedral of Saints Peter and

1929, with Cardinal.Dougherty as
consecrator, and with the late
Most Rev. John B. MacGinley,
then Bishop of Fresno, and the
Most Rev. Thomas C. Reilly, then
Bishop of Scranton, his native Dio
cese, as co-consecrators.
As Auxiliary Bishop of Phila-
delphia, Bishop O’Hara, imine-
diately demonstrated the wisdom
of the Holy See. He was tire
less in his labors, confirming,

more than ten thousand parishion
ers of record. He was named a
synodical examiner, a Diocesan
consulant, and then Vicar General
of the great Archdiocese of nearly
a million souls. _ *
In November, 1935, he was ap
pointed Bishop of Savannah, and
was installed at the Cathedral
in Savannah on January 15, 1936
by Cardinal Dougherty.

It is not often that the Su
preme Board of Directors of the
Knights of Columbus meets in the
Southeast, and the coming ses
sion in Atlanta is regarded as a
recognition of the remarkable
progress which has been made by
Atlanta Council, No. 660 in the
last few years, and in acceptance

In January, 1926, the Supreme
Board of Directors met in Au-
gusta Ga., at the invitation of

gian to serve as a member of
the Board.
The Supreme Board meeting in
Atlanta will cpincide with the ob
servance by Atlanta Council of its
43rd anniversary.
