Coast Guard Officer
Returns to Augusta
After Serving Overseas
AUCUSTA, Ga.—Joseph Muti-
eri, former Augusta newspaper
man, arrived liere on March 19,
wearing the uniform of a lieuten
ant commander in the coast guard,
after eighteen months in Italy.
After completing a short leave
and conferring with officials in
Washington, Commander Mulieri,
chief of the fisheries division agi-
cultural sub-commission, Allied
commission in Italy, will return to
finish his task of rehabilitating
the Italian fishing industry in the
Northern Adriatic and Northern
Mediterranean areas when those
sections are freed of the enemy.
Commander Mulieri is the hus
band of the former Miss Teresa
Punaro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Anthony Punaro of Augusta. They
have one son, Vincent Mulieri. Be
fore enlisting in the coast guard,
Commander Mulieri had been on
the staff of The Augusta Herald
and The Charleston Evening Post.
He was born in Italy, but had liv
ed in Augusta since he was twelve
years old. He is a graduate of
the Junior College of Augusta
and the University of North Car
olina.
While on a visit to Rome, Com
mander Mulieri, in company with
four high-ranking Navy officers,
one of whom was an admiral, vis
ited the Vatican, and with his com
panions was privileged to be grant
ed a private audience by His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII.

Meets in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S. C.—The Colum
bia Deanery of the National Coun
cil of Catholic Women was host
to the officers and chairmen of the
standing committees of the
Charleston Diocesan Council at a
meeting held in the N. C. C. W.
Hall in Columbia, S. C.
Mrs. Charles F. J. Bultman, of
Columbia, presided at the meeting,
which was honored by the pres
ence, as guest speaker, of tlie Most
Rev. Emmet M. Walsh, D. D.,
Bishop of Charleston.
The subject of the Bishop’s ad
dress was the need for Catholics
to understand and take an active
part in the preparations for the
post-war world. Stressing this, he
urged reading of the “The Bishop’s
Statement on International Or
der,” and a study of the Dumbar
ton Oaks proposals.
In closing he expressed his re
gret that some Catholics did not
take advantage of the special de
votions offered during this time of
suffering and conflict, because on
ly the intervention of God would
bring a just peace.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Martin C.
Murphy, V. F., pastor of St.
Peter’s Church, Columbia, gave
the invocation and benediction.
The meeting was attended by
representatives from Greenville,
Spartanburg, Charleston, Sumter
and Columbia. Most gratifying re
ports on the work of the Dean

CHARLESTON, S. C. — Catho
lic Charities of Charleston has
ben given an eleemosynary char
ter by the State of South Caro
lina, and this new agency to or
ganize and develop Catholic char
ities in this city is opening an
office at 86 America Street, with
the Rev. J. William Goldsmith,
s.eretary and executive director
in charge.
Father Goldsmith explained
that Catholic Charities of Charles
ton, a member of the Community
Chest, differs from the Associated
Charities in that it will be pri
marily a service agency, render
ing both family and child wel
fare service. The Associated Char
ities, he said, is largely a relief
agency-
Miss Anne Magarahan, of
Greenville, has been appointed
executive secretary. A graduate of
the Catholic School of Social
Service, Miss Magarahan has
been associated with the Catholic
Charities of Hartford, Conn-, for
nine years.

FORTY HOURS DEVOTION
AT ST. MARY’S, AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA, Ga.—The Rev. J.
Rabert Brennan, pastor of St. Jo
seph’s Church, Athens, delivered
a series of sermons on The Holy
Eucharist at the Forty Hours Dp-
votion held at St. Mary’s-on-The-
Hill Church February 25-27.
The Very Rev. Thomas A. Bren
nan V. F., pastor of the church,
officiated at Solemn Benediction
of the Blessed Sacrament at the
closing services of the devotions,
with the Rev. J- Robert Brennan,
as deacon, and the Rev. Joseph A.
Kelly, chaplain at Oliver General
Hospital, subdeacon. The Rev.
James J. Campbell, assistant pas
tor of St Mary’s-on-The-Hill, was
master of ceremonies.
Present in the sanctuary were
the Right Rev, Msgr. Joseph F.
Croke, Atlanta; the Rev. Hugh J.
Hewitt, of Brooklyn, the Rev. J. E.
O’Donohoe, S. J., the Rev. J. J.
Murphy S. J., the Rev. George

MOST REV. JOHN F. O’HARA
His Holiness Pope Pius XXII
has designated the Most Rev. John
F. O’Hara, C. S. C., D. D., former
President of the University of
Notre Dame, who has been Titular
Bishop of Mylasa and Military
Delegate, as Bishop of Buffalo, to
fill the vacancy caused by the
death of Bishop John A. Duffy.

THE FIRST U. S. SOLDIER to
cross the German Rhine in the
war against Nazi Germany was
Sergeant Alexander Drabik, a
member of Our Lady of Lourdes
parish in Holland. Ohio.
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Sponsored by
the Chatham County Garden Club
Council, a flower show was held
on March 21 at the USO-NCCS
Club on Liberty St., under the
direction of Mrs. Frank Littlefield,
council president. The exhibition
included arrangements of one
type, a variety and shrubs.
Mrs. D. J. Colvin, night hostess
at the club, was assisted by Miss
Stacia Colvin, Miss Jeanne Colvin,
Miss Dorothy Palmer and a com
mittee from the Junior Hostess
Club.
Service men and women were
invited to attend and during the
evening dancing was an added at
traction.

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Nurses
Alumnae of St. Joseph’s Hospital
sponsored an informal dance at
the USO-NCCS Club recently. The
committee in charge included Miss
Jennie Bouhan, Miss Mary Mc
Nally, Mrs. Julia Whelan and Mrs.
Margaret Dulohcry.
An open house party preceded
the dance, hostesses in the draw
ing rooms being Mrs. Harry T.
Wilson, Mrs. Frances Moran, Mrs.
Lawrence Dunn, Sr., Misses Elsie
Hollister, Eleanor Hutton, Bridget
Fogarty, Winifred Quinn, Grace

POSTHUMOUS AWARD
FOR AUGUSTA AIRMAN
AUGUSTA, Ga.—An Air Medal
with cluster awarded to Lieut. Lc-
Gardc S. Doughty, Jr., who died in
action near the Anzio beachhead
in February of last year, has been
presented to his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. LcGardc S. Doughty.
The Air Medal and clusters were
awarded posthumously to Lieu
tenant Doughty for “sustained op
erational activity over enemy ter
ritory.” Lieutenant Doughty had
flown 61 missions. The message
to his parents also stated that
Lieutenant Doughty was buried
with full military honors, with the
chaplain of the 57th Bomber group
officiating.

Jacobs, who before her marriage
was Miss Vola O'Connor, of this
city, recently appeared as a guest
soloist with the Chicago Sym
phony orchestra, and her piano
selections were received with en
thusiasm by an audience of sev
eral thousand.

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Lieut. Gen.
George C. Kenney, comanding the
Allied Air Forces in the South
west Pacific area, has personally
recognized the courage of Lieut.
Robert L. Gordon, a graduate of
the Benedictine Military School
here.
In a letter to Mrs. Florence Gor
don, mother of the young officer.
General Kenney stated that Lieu
tenant Gordon had recently been
awarded the Air Modal in recogni
tion of his courageous service in
his combat organization, and that
the bombing missions in which he
had participated had aided con
siderably in our successes in this
theatre of the war.
MACON, Ga.—The Rev. Har
vey W. llockwood, S. J., of the
Southern Jesuit Provincial Head-
quarters in New Orleans con
ducted the Novcna of Grace to
St. Francis Xavier at St. Joseph’s
Church here, March 4-12.
Father Rockwood also conduct
ed the “Trc Ore” devotions at St.
Joseph’s Church on Good Friday.
BIRTHDAY PARTY AT
MACON USO-NCCS CLUB
On March 20, the Most Rev.
Gerald P. O’Hara, Bishop of Sa-
vannah-Atlanta, administered the
Sacrament of Confirmation to a
class of sixty-four, at St. Joseph's
Church in Macon. About one-
half of those confirmed were
adults.
MACON, Ga.—The March.birth
day party at the USO-NCCS Club
featured a program which includ
ed tap dancing, vocal and accor
dion selections by students from
Mount de Sales Academy, with a
quiz program that taxec} the wits
of the contestants. A committee
from Macon Council, Knights of
Soluinbus, assisted in presenting
the program.
Misses Felice McGoldnck and
Rita Garvin in green costumes,
entertained with dancing, with
Miss Ann Graham, Chicago and
Miss Anita Johnson, of Sparta,
Ga., playing piano and accordion.
Miss Graham also sang, with Mrs.
S. A. Giglio accompanying. ,
