BRUNSWICK, Ga.—By a happy
coincidence the nation’s Day of
Prayer proclaimed by President
Truman in thanksgiving for vic
tory in Europe! Mothers’ Day, and
the feast of Our Lady of the Ros
ary of Fatima, all fell dn the saihe
day. May 13, this year. St. Fran
cis Xavier's parish in Brunswick,
tiie proud possessor of a beautiful
statue of Our Lady of the Rosary
of Fatima, imported from Portu
gal, celebrated these events with
fitting ceremony.
A High Mass was sung in the
n.orning by the pastor. Father
Philip A. Hasson, S. M., who also
deliverer an appropriate sermon.
Members of the Confraternity of
Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima,
Manuel Sousa, president, and
members of the Sodality of Our
Lady. of Rosary of Fatima, Mrs.
Mary Martin, president, marched
with the Knights of Columbus in
solemn procession around the
Church property. The statue of
Cur Lady of the Rosary of Fatima,
banked with beautiful flowers was
borne on file shouflders of the
Confraternity members and occu
pied the place of honor in the pro
cession.
Earlier in the morning sixteen
children from the parochial school
made their First Holy Communion
after which they and their fami
lies were the guests of Manuel
Boa at a Communion Breakfast
served in Xavier Hall. The First
Communicants also took part in
the procession in honor of Our
Lady.
Open house was held at Xavier
Hall throughout the day with re
freshments and entertainment be
ing provided by the Confraternity
and Sodality members.
May Devotions and Benediction
of the Blessed Sacrament in the
evening were a fitting closing to
the day's celebration.
Retreat Conducted for
WACs From Fort Benning

HOLY TRINITY Ala.—Sixteen
members of the Women’s Army
Corps, stationed at Fort Benning,
Ga., participated • in a week-end
retreat at Blessed Trinity Mis
sionary Cenacle. The retreat was
conducter by Father Damien, As
sistant Custodian of St. Joseph's
Preparatory Seminary of the
Missionary Servants of the Most
Holy Trinity.
T)>e retreat, in which ten
states were represented, was
suggested by Sgt. Rita Delaney,
of St. Patrick’s parish, Brooklyn,
N. Y. Sgt. Delaney met some of
the Sisters, Missionary Servants
of the Most Blessed Trinity, at St.
Patrick’s School in Phenix City,
Ala., and questioned them as to
the possibility of a “WAC Re
treat” by a Missionary Father.
Sergeant Delaney brought the
retreatants to Holy Trinity in an
Army bus. The names and par
ishes of those who participated

REV. AMBROSE SMITH, O. P.
COLUMBIA, S. C—The three
brothers of the Rev. Ambrose
Smith, O. P., who are also Domi
nican priests, were officers of the
Solemn Mass of Requiem which
was offered for the repose of his
soul in St. Dominic’s Church,
Washington, D. C. The Very Rev.
Ignatius Smith, O. P., dean of the
School of Philosophy at the Cath
olic University of America, was
the celebrant; the Rev.' George I.
Smith, O. P., who teaches engi
neering at the University of Notre
Dame, was deacon, and the Rev.
John R. Smith, O. P., dean of men
at Aquinas College, Columbus, O.,
was sub-deaeon. The sermon was
delivered by the Very Rev. Ed
ward C. Fitzgerald, O. P.
Father Smith, head of the Domi
nican Mission Baud in Columbia,
died here on May 20. He was well
known throughout the southeast,
having given many missions and
retreats in this section.
Born in Newark, N. J., May 17.
1897, Father Smith was educated
at St. Bonavent lire’s School in
Newark and St. Peter’s College,
Jersey City. He made his studies
f ■ the priesthood at St. Joseph's
College, Somerset, O., the Domi
nican House of Studies at the
Catholic University in Washington,
ai J the University of Louvain in
Belgium.
Since his ordination in June
1923, he had served as a profes
sor and master of students at the
Dominican House of Studies in
River Park. III., and as head of the
Dominican Mission Bands, at
Houston, Texas, New Orleans and
Columbia.
Father Smith is survived by six
brothers and a sister.

Kennedy, Pensacola, Fla., and
Mrs. Agnes C Morrison. Jackson
ville' two brothers. Fred L. Buc-
heit, Savannah' and William Bue-
heit. Dallas.
Born in Florence, October 24.
1882. Miss Bucheit was the daugh
ter of the late Phillip Bucheit and
Mrs. Elizabeth Stackley Bucheit.
For throe decades slip was owner
and manager of F. M. Bucheit A
Company, a millinery establi-h-
) lent here. She was a niece of
Mrs. S. J. Bucheit, Mrs. W H. Ber
ry and Mrs. W. F. Stackley, of
Florence.

CEDARTOWN CHURCH
GAINESVILLE, Ga.—Mrs. Fred
Costa was installed as president cf
the Altar Society of St. Michael’s
church at a meeting held on May
11 at the apartment of Mrs. Wil
liam Faw at the Dixie Hunt Hotel.
Mrs. Costa succeeds Mrs. J. C.
Spencer.
Plans were made for the mem
bers of the society to receive Holy
Communion in a group of th sec
ond Sunday of each month. Mrs.
James Driskoll will serve as pro
gram chairman for the meeting
which will he held on June 4, at
which a question box period will
be a feature.

office of Master of the North
Carolina Province of (he Fourth
Degree Knights of Columbus, at
a meeting of the Bishop Mc
Guinness Fourth Degree Assem
bly held here on April 29, at the
Robert E. Lee Hotel. The office
will be filled by appointment by
tiie Supreme Master of the Fourth
Degree.

sembly was appointed to assist in
perfecting plans for the formal
installation of the Most Rev. Vin
cent S. Waters, D. D„ as Bishop
of Raleigh, on June 5.

lation ceremony, and those partic
ipating will wear tuxedos, with

St. Paul’s Altar Society
Meets in Douglas
DOUGLAS, Ga. — The monthly
meeting of the Altar Society of
St. Paul’s Church was held at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Han
na, with Miss Sue Hanna presid
ing.
Minutes of the preceding meet
ing were read by the secretary,
Mrs. James Nahra, and a financial
report was submitted by the treas
urer. Matters discussed included
plans for the meeting of the Sa
vannah Deanery Council of the
National Council of Catholic Wo
men, family Communion on Mo
thers’ Day. and a summer school
for the children of the parish, to
be conduc ed by the Grey Nuns of
the Sacred Heart from Christ the
King School in Atlanta.
At (he close of the business ses
sion. ?Jr. and Mrs. George Hanna,
who were celebrating their sixth
wedding a. u'.vorsary, were guests
cf honor at a bridge party, at
which the award for the highest
score went to Lieut. Maria Saliba
of the Army Nurse Corps, station
ed ai Camp Rucker, Ala. Many
gifts were presented the honor
guests and refreshments were serv
ed.
Several motion pictures, includ
ing "The King of Kings,” have
been exhibited for members of St.
Paul’s p:u'i'h and their friends at
the parish hall, by the Rev. Fred
eric.: V. Gilbert, O. M. I., the local
pastor.
A special Mass of thanksgiving
was offered at St. Paul’s Church,
on V-E Day by Father Gilbert. The
rosary was recited later in the
day. and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament was given by Father
Gilbert, who also led the congre
gation in prayers of thanksgiving,
and delivered a brief sermon. A
Requiem Mass for the repose of
iHe souls of those who have given
thei>- lives in the present conflict,
was‘offered in connection with the
V-E Day observance.
MOTION PICTURE RIGHTS to
tiie novel ‘‘These Two Hands,” by
the Rev. Edward J. Edwards, S.
V. D., have been purchased by
Twentieth Century-Fox Film Cor
poration. Father Edwards wroto
his work, together with "Thy Peo
ple, My People,” while recovering
from a. attack of malaria incurred
in the Philippines and China,
where he served as a missionary.
