MAY 31, 1945 THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN'S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA rlVE—A Commencement Program, Sacred Heart, Belmont (Special to The Bulletin) BELMONT, N. C.—As a feature of the commencement program at Sacred Heart Junior College, the Sacred Heart Alumnae Associa tion will entertain with its first Alumnae Day on the college cam pus on June 2. Miss Mary Louise Leonard, formerly associated with National Catholic Community Ser vice in South Carolina, will be the guest speaker of the day, speaking to the alumnae on “Comparative Advantages of Educational Sys tems Here and Abroad.” Miss Leonard was born in England, and was educated in France and Switz erland. She attended Cornell University, New York Universit , and Columbia University, where her study for a doctorate was in terrupted by her entering war, work with a member agency of the* USO. The Alumnae Day program will open with Mass at 9 o’clock in the convent chapel. The registration desk in the Administration Build ing, will remain open from 10 a. m., until 2 p. m. At 11 a. m., re union class meetings will be held in the Administration and luncheon will be se the dining hall at 1 o'clock. A business session and a memorial service will be held in the audi torium at 3 o'clock. Committee meetings are scheduled for 4 o'clock, and a bufffet supper will be served in the Social Hall at 5:30 o’clock. In the evening there will be a dance at the Belmont Abbey College gymnasium. The complete commencement program is as follows: May 25, Grade School com mencement; June 1, Glee club con cert, 8 p. m.; June 3, Mother- daughter reception and tea, 4 p. m.; June 4, Class Day exercises, 8 p. m.; June 5. Baccalaureate Mass, 8 a. m.; Faculty breakfast fqr graduates, 9 a. m.; Tree plant ing and dedication, 11 a. m., June 6, Graduation exercises, 10 a. m. COMMUNION-BREAKFAST ON MOTHERS’ PAY FOR PARISH MEMBERS IN AMERICUS AMERICUS, Ga.—Members of St. Mary’s parish held their first annual Mothers’ Day Communion breakfast, at the Windsor Hotel, after all had received Holy Com munion in honor of the Mother of God, their own mothers, and in thanksgiving for the victory in Europe. Speakers at the breakfast were the Rev. Godfrey Weitekamp, O. F. M., pastor of St. Mary’s Church, and James Blair, editor and pub lisher of The Amcricus Times- Recorder. Lieut. Larry McLaugh lin, a veteran of the Pacific theater of war, who had made more than sixty combat missions, and who had merited seven battle stars and other honors, had also been in vited to speak, but orders to report to Turner Field. Albany, prevented his attending the breakfast. CAMPUS OF SCHOOL IN ROME—The attractive wooded area shown above, which adjoins the property which will be converted into a parochial school for St. Mary’s Church, in Rome, Georgia, will be used as the school campus. The Glover McGhee home stood on the site until it was destroyed by fire some years ago. BROTHERS FROM AUGUSTA MEET ON OKINAWA AUGUSTA, Ga.—Louis O’Con nell. who is serving as an athletic instructor with the Seabees, and his brother, Lt. James J. O’Con nell, who is with the Sixth Marine Division, were united recently on Okinawa. During intervals of fighting the Japanese, they were able to tell each other their expe riences since their last previous meeting, about a year ago. SINCLAIR CONFIRMATION AT SAVANNAH CATHEDRAL SAVANNAH, Ga.—On the Feast of Pcntacost, the Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D., J. U. D., Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to a class of thirty-eight boys and girls and to another class of forty- five adults at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Members of Our Lady's Sodality and cadets of the Bendictinc Mili tary School from the Cathedral parish were sponsors for the class of boys and girls. National Maritime Day was ob served at the Cathedral with a Requiem Mass for the repose of the souls of those who lost their livs at sea during the war. ANNUAL REVIEW OF BELMONT CADETS BELMONT. N. C.—The Belmont Abbey College cadet corps held its annual review and competitive drill on May 21, under the com mand of Colonel William A. Me Adam, U. S. Army (Retired) Com mandant of the corps. The cadets passed in review be fore the Right Rev. Vincent G. Taylor, O. S. B„ D. D„ Abbot Ordinary of Belmont and presi dent of the college; the Rev. Bede C. Lightner, O. S. B., rector of the college; members of Uie faculty, ranking army officers and distinguished guests. The corps marched to the music of the Belmont High School band, which is directed by Mrs. Ken neth Hoyle. Sponsors chosen by the cadet officers were Miss Shirley Fields, Charlotte, staff sponsor; Miss Kathleen Neilson, Charlotte, spon sor for Company A. and Miss Janet Cushman, Charlotte, spon sor of Company B. MAY FESTIVAL HELD AT ATLANTA SCHOOL ATLANTA, Ga. — The annual May festival ol the Sacred Heart School was held on the lawn of St. Joseph's Infirmary, May 18, under the direction of Mrs. Doro thy Vogel. Miss Dorothy Leak was ’ the queen, with Miss Jean nette Snee as maid of honor. The theme of the festival was the pot- trayal of the characters of the Mother Goose nursery rimes.
