Rice as general manager of that newspa per. In addition, Mr. Rice will continue to serve as advertising director, a position he has held for several years. Mr. Rice has been connected with the Chronicle since 1937, except for a brief pe riod during which he was on the advertising staff of The Atlanta Journal. - .... Born in Augusta, Mr. Rice is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Carson Rice, and the late -Captain P. H. Rice, K. S. G., for many years president of the Catholic Laymens’ Associa tion of Georgia. He graduated • from Spring Hill College. Mobile, Ala., in 1926, and later attended Holy Cross College, Worcester, Mass. Mr. Rice married Miss Mary An drews. of Augusta, and they have two children, Philomena Rice and Patrick H. Rice, IIJ. He is a mem ber of St. Mary’s-on-The-Hill par ish. C.—The, four teenth annual North Carolina Catholic Laymen’s Retreat was held at Beimont Abbey, from the evening of Friday, July 20 to the atfernoon of Sunday, July 22, with the Rev. Charles F. Connor, S. J., as retreatmaster. Father Connor, one of this coun try’s best retreatmasters, is a for mer member of the Jesuit Mis sion Band of the New York Prov ince and a former Army chaplain. He has been a member of the fac ulty of Holy Cross College and has also taught at the extension school at Fordham University. He is a very learned man and a forceful speaker who has the gift of being able to hold the undivided atten tion of his hearers at all times. He has a pleasing personality and was just the type that the retreatanta enjoyed talking with, and the Re treat which was just concluded is regarded by all who attended as one of the best of the series of Re treats for laymen held at the Ab bey. At the business meeting the following officers were elected by the Retreat Association for the ensuing year: John Eck, K. S. G., Gastonia, president; George L. Army has been removed to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., where it started Masses on July 14, according to announcement of the Fourth Service Command here. It is the first time in the cchool’s history that it has been operated within the territorial limits of this command, Major General Edward H. Brooks, com manding general, stated. The faculty and equipment were moved from Fort Devens, Mass., where the school was operated after . its removal from Harvard University. Established during the First World War. the school has operated successively at Camp Taylor, Ky., Fort Knox, Ky.. Fort Wayne, Mich., Bert Leavenworth, Kan., and Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. , . Chaplain Maurice W. Reynolds, a Congregationallst minister, is commandant of the school, which offers the regulation chaplains’ course to ministers of all religions who have been accepted as Army chaplains. In addition, there is a special advanced course for Army chaplains with overseas service. JEANE A.
