IN FORMING CHARACTER
M-M-M-M! WATERMELON! And to it with a right good will—to say
nothing of appetite—goes John Tweed, ASNROTC, of Chicago, and
Cadet Nurse Alice Burke, of Atlanta, at a recent watermelon party
for men and women in uniform given by the USO-NCCS Club, operat
ed in cooperation with the Catholic War Service Council of Atlanta and
Atlanta Council. Knights of Columbys, at the K. of C. Home on At

VATICAN CITY, — Discipline
that is not merely external, but
cor ists of rigorous self-control, is
as momentous in the realm of
sports as it is in the intellectual or
moral order, His Holiness Pope
Pius XII told directors and in
structors of the United Slates
Army Central Sports School, whom
he received in a private audience.
The group included soldiers who
had attended Princeton, Michigan
State. Columbia, Pittsburgh, In
land Stanford. Penn State and
Miami universities.
“In bidding you a cordial wel
come today,” the Holy Father said,
greeting the physical instructors,
“we are conscious that this is an
exceptional group. As directors and
instructors of the Central Sports
School you represent the effort to
develop man's physical powers and
,o train his character.
"As graduates of many American
universities you represent the
striving of wan for those higher
values which arc recalled by the
very name university. And, final-
Jy, as a unit under military di
rection, you suggest that discipline
by which the spiritual and physi
cal, tlie soul and body, must be
brought into harmony, the har
mony of the complete man.
“Sports, properly directed, de
velop character, make man cour
ageous, a generous loser and a
gracious victor. Sports refine the
senses, give us intellectual pene
tration, steel the will to endurance.
“It is not merely a physical de
velopment then. Sports, rightly un
derstood, mean the development of
the whole man. and, while pci i cl
ing the body as an instrument oi
the mind, also make the mind it
self a mure refined instrument in
the search for and communication
of truth. Rightly understood,
: ports help man to achieve that
end to which all others mu i. i>e
subservient, the service and praiae
of iiis Creator.”
