Lieutenant General Hoy S. Gei
ger, commanding general of the
fleet Marine force in the Pacific,
has commended Lieutenant James
J. O’Connell, of Augusta, who is
attached to the headquarters com
pany, Second Battalion. Sixth Ma
rine Division, “for meritorius and
efficient performance of duty.’’
The citation, which was accom
panied by the ribbon of commen
dation, was merited by Lieutenant
O’Connell in connection with op
erations against the enemy on
Okinawa, Shima, Ryuku islands,
from April 1 to June 20, 1945, and
declares that: “As adjutant of a
Marine infantry battalion, First
Lieutenant O’Connell served with
outstanding efficiency, initiative
and courage, when at one stage of
the operation the assignment of
replacements bore a direct effect
on the efficiency of the battalion,
his ability and judgment in their
placement directly influenced the
continued success of the batta
lion.”
Continuing, the citation reads:
“On May 9, when the night secur
ity of the command post was dis
rupted by heavy enemy artillery
fire, he voluntarily exposed him
self to the enemy fire in order to
place the sentries in more ad
vantageous positions, and to visit
each position of the defense, en
couraging the men botti by his
words and his example.”
A member of St. Mary's-on-The-
Hill parish, Lieutenant O'Connell
is the son of Mrs. Edward Pierce
O’Connell. His wife is tlie former
Miss Julia Chesser. He lias two
brothers in the service, Louis J.
O'Connell, who served with the
Seabees in the Pacific, and who is
now en route home, and Captain
Joseph J. O’Connell, who is sta
tioned in Manila.
WOMEN’S RETREAT
HELD IN MACON

MACON, Ga. — The twenty-
fourth annual Retreat for lay wo
men of the Diocese of Savannah-
Atlanta, held under the auspiees
of the Catholic Laymen’s Associa
tion of Georgia, with the coopsra-
tion of the National Council of
Catholic Women, was conducted
by the Very Rev. Harold A.
Guudin, S. J., pastor of St. Joseph's
Church in Macon.
