SALISBURY, N. C—The Rev.
Pierce O’Connell, M. S. SS. T..
arrived in Salisbury in October
to become assistant to the Rev.
Cletus J. Helfrich, pastor of the
Sacred Heart Church.
Father O'Connell, a native of
Philadelphia, is a distant relative
of the late Most Rev. Patrick
John Ryan, Archbishop of Phila
delphia. He received his elemen
tary education at a parochial
school conducted by the Sisters
of St. Joseph in Philadelphia, la
ter entering St. Joseph’s Prepar
atory School and St. Joseph’s
College, in Philadelphia, where he
majored in Sociology under the
Jesuit Fathers.
After receiving his A. B. de
gree, in 1940, Father O’Connell
entered the Congregation of the
Missionary Servants of the Most
Holy Trinity at Cottonton, Ala.
A year later he entered the Con
gregation's House of Studies at
Silver Springs, Md., where he
completed his theological course.
On May 22, of this year, he was
ordained to the priesthood by the
Most Rev. John M. McNamara,
D. D., V. G., Auxiliary Bishop of
Baltimore and Washington, at the
National Shrine of the Immacu
late Conception in Washington,
D. C.
Father O'Connell was the fifty-
second Missionary Servant of the
Most Holy Trinity to be elevated
to the priesthood. The Congrega
tion, composed of priests and
Brothers, was founded in 1920,
and is devoted to home mission
ary work in the Southern states.

The Congregation is serving in
the Archdioceses of Baltimore
and Washington and in the Dio
ceses of Mobile, Paterson, Rich
mond and Scranton. Father
O’ConneU's brother, Brother
Gregory Noel, M. S. SS. T.. is a
Missionary Brother in the same
Congregation.
Since coming to Salisbury, Fa
ther O’Connell has been direct
ing the Catholic Youth Club, the
choir, and the altar boys’ society
of the Sacred Heart Church.
Bishop Waters Administers
Confirmation in Salisbury

SALISBURY, N. C.—The Sac
rament of Confirmation was ad
ministered at the Sacred Heart
Church in Salisbury on Novem
ber 4 by the Most Rev. Vincent
S. Waters, D. D., Bishop of Ral
eigh.
This was Bishop Waters' first
official visit to the parish since
his installation as Bishop of Ral
eigh last spring, and the entire
congregation was present to wel
come His Excellency and to meet
him personally afler the cere
mony.
Following the administration
of Confirmation, Bishop Waters
officiated at Solemn Pontifical
Benediction of the Blessed Sac
rament, with the Rev. John
Roueche, recently a chaplain in
the Army, as deacon, and the Rev.
James J. Bradley, C. S. Sp.. pastor
of Our Lady of Victory Church,
subdeacon.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Helf
rich, of York, Pa., parents of the
Rev. Cletus J. Helfrich, pastor of
the Sacred Heart Church, acted as
sponsors to the Confirmation
class of twenty-three children and
seven adults, including Louis

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CLUB
GIVES “POLYANNA PARTY”

bury entertained at its annual
"Pollyanna party” on the eve
ning of November 5, in the parish
recreational hall, with tlie full
membership attending. The ex
change of gifts and the revealing
of “secret sisters" of the past year
contributed to the enjoyment of
Ihe occasion.
At (he meeting of the club an
interesting explanation of the
early oiigin of Hallowe'en and
its pranks was made by Mrs
Charles J. Helfrich, of York. Pa.,
and the Rev. Cletus Helfrich,
pastor of the Sacred Heart Church
and spiritual director of the club,
spoke on "Catholicism in Democ
racy.” Mrs. Fierce Beaziey, pres
ident of tlie club, presided.
A report was made at the meet
ing on the sale of Victory Bonds by
(he Catholic women of Salisbury
who are in charge of the booth on
Center Square each Wednesday
during the current bond selling
campaign.
HALLOWE EN PARTY FOR
PAROCHIAL SCHOOL PUPILS
The Catholic Women’s Club of
Salisbury sponsored a Hallow
e’en party for the children attend
ing the Sacred Heart parochial
school. The children, who attend
ed attired in costumes, were en
tertained with games and con
tests. Prizes . were given to the
winners and to the wearers of the
prettiest, funniest, ugliest and
most original costumes.
The Sacred Heart School, which
is conducted by the Sisters of
Mercy, with Sister Mary Colum-?
ha as principal, has an enroll
menl. of sixty-three pupils this
year, a third of them being non-

Catholic Daughters to
Sponsor Essay Contest

NEW YORK—Spurred on by the
number of entrants from element
ary schools in the 1944 national
essay contest sponsored by the
Catholic Daughters of America,
Miss Mary C. Duffy, supreme re
gent. announced this week (hat the
Department of Education, under
the direction of Dr. Lulu M.
Splide, has set up a separate di
vision for elementary students,
with its own subject and sepa
rate prizes, for the 1945-1946 es
say contest.
“Our South American Neigh
bors” is the topic assigned to the
elementary grade students. Each
essay submited by an entrant is
to be accompanied by a personal
letter written to some boy or girl
in any of ihe territories or re
publics of Latin America.
In the first division, open to high
school and college students and
others over 18 years of age, “Cath
olic Philisophy in the American
Form of Democracy” is the assign
ed essay topic. In last year’s
essay on the Life of Pope Pius
XU, entrants from 22 states, the
District of Columbia and Alaska
competed.
Fish and Teresa Trollinger were
appointed as a committee to ar
range for a Thanksgiving Day
party for the club at the Fisher
Farm.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mrs. Edith
Kerr appeared as guest artist on
a musical program presented at
the USO-NCCS-Club here on No
vember 4, with Mrs. Coleman
Dempsey as her accompanist.
American Jesuit in
Germany as Adviser
to Justice Jackson

WASHINGTON, D. C. — The
Rev. Edmund A. Walsh, S. J., re
gent of the School of Foreign Ser
vice, at Georgetown University,
here, is in Germany, serving as
adviser on geopolitics to Justice
Robert Jackson’s Council for the
Prosecution of Axis War Criminal
ity, it lias been revealed at the
university.
Before leaving for overseas. Fa
ther Walsh lectured at the Com
mand and General Staff,School at
Fort Leavenworth and at the
Judge Advocate General’s School
at Ann Arbor. A recognized au
thority on geopolitics, Father
Walsh W'as writing a book on the
subject when he received a call
from the War Department to act
as adviser to Justice Jackson’s
council.
For the past sixteen years Fa
ther Walsh has studied the rise of
the German school of geopolitics,
under Professor Haushol’er of the
University of Munich. Geopolitics
is a science that studies the rela
tion of geography to the develop
ment of peoples and states. Many
members of the diplomatic service
and army officers corps, attend the
clases conducted by Father Walsh
at the School of Foreign Service.
