in February are the above four from the United States. This will be
I he largest single creation of Cardinals and the first by the present
Pontiff. For the first time in history the United States will have five
living Cardinals. Left to right: Archbishop John J. Glennon, of St.
Louis; Archbishop Edward Mooney, of Detroit; Archbishop Samuel A
Stritch, of Chicago, Chairman of the Administrative Board ol' the Na
tional Catholic Welfare Conference, and Archbishop Francis J. Spell

VATICAN CITY—With thirty-
two new Cardinals, including four
Americans, nominated by His
Holiness Pope Pius XII, the
Sacred Collefe is brought up to
its full complement of 70 mem
bers, for the first time in many
years.
A special edition of Osservatore
Romano made the announcement
of the new cardinals.
The newspaper also announced
that the Holy Father will hold a
secret Consistory on February 18
to raise the 32 prelates to the
sacred purple.
The members of the Hierarchy
in the United States who have
been named Cardinals, in the
sequence listed by the Vatican
City daliy, are:
Archbishop John Joseph Glon-
non of St. Louis.
Archbishop Edward Moonev of
Detroit. y
Archbishop Samuel A. Stritch
of Chicago.
Archbishop Francis J. Spell
man of New York.
A distinguished Canadian pre
late also was among those elevated
to the Cardinalate. He is Arch
bishop James Charles McGuigan of
Toronto.
O — o
LARGEST IN HISTORY
The nomination of 32 pre
lates to the Sacred College
of Cardinals represents the
largest single elevation of
Cardinals in history.
The largest number pre
viously named at any one time
was 31, elevated by Pope Leo
X on July 1, 1517.
The United States will now
have the greatest number of
Cardinals it has ever had at
any one time. Previously
there have been four Cardi
nals in this country simul
taneously. Now, with the
four nominees and His
Eminence Dennis Cardinal
Dougherty Archbishop of
Philadelphia, there will be
five.
This represents the first
time Pope Pius XII has exer
cised the right to create Car
dinals.
The last nominations to the
Sacred College were made by
Pope Plus XI in December,
1937, when he raised five pre
lates to the purple, raising the
membership of (lie College
of 69, one short of its full
complement. Since that time,
the number had fallen to 38, i
because of death.
: —O
ONLY FOUR ITALIANS
Only four of the new Cardinal!
are Italians; 28 come from 18
other countries. The Sacred Col
lege will now be made up of 28
Italian Cardinals and 42 non-
Italians.
Of the newly-named Cardinals,
the four Americans represent the
largest number named in any one
country aside from Italy, which
receives the same number
Three new Cardinals were
named in France, Spain and Ger
many. Tv/o were named in Brazil.
One new Cardinal was named in
Poland, Canada Armenia, The
Netherlands, Chile, Cuba, Peru,
Argentina, China, Asutralia, Eng
land and Hungary. The Arch
bishop of Lourenco Marques, a
Portuguese possession, is a native
of the Island of Madera, which is
Portuguese.
Naming of another Cardinal for
Canada t which already had one
represents the first time the Do
minion has had two members of
the Sacred College.
Naming of six new Cardinals in
countries of Latin America repre
sents an impressive increase. In
recent years there have been only
two Latin American , Cardinals,
and at the time the new announce
ments were made there was only
one.
Naming of two Cardinals for
Brazil and one for Argentina rep
resents the first time a Latin
American country has had two
Cardinals. In Argentina there
already was one member of the
Sacred College.
In the Western Hemisphere,
there are now 14 Cardinals, a far
greater number than ever before.
Recently there have been only
three, although this was partly
because of deaths. A few years
ago there were seven—four in
the U. S., two in Latin America
and one in Canada.

CHICAGO, —(NC)— In recog
nizing the supranational character
of Christianity through the ap
pointment of 32 new Cardinals the
Holy Father has displayed “a true
Christian statesmanship.” writes
The Christian Century, in an edi
torial headed “Rome Broadens Its
Base."
While Protestants “will rejoice
in the evidence now at hand that a
vigorous life is pulsing in the com
munion of Rome,” they will “rc-
gi'et that no equally impressive
church statemanship, no equally
commanding message, has as yet
come to this postwar world from
any authoritative Protestant bodv
or leadership.”
Referring to the Pontiff’s “mov
ing plea” for prisoners of war and
political prisoners, which he made
in his 1945 Christmas allocution.
The Christian Century writes: “It
was high time that the voice of
religion was raised in behalf of
these war victims.”
Princes of the Church. The Con
sistoi'y took the Eternal City by
surprise. For months, Con
sistory had been rumored. Re
ports had sprung up al over the
world as to when it would take
place and as to the personalities
it would affect. Speculation was
rife.
The Vatican, in the midst of
these rumors, went calmly on its
way until the hour came. Then,
with dramatic suddenness, the
announcement was made. There
is much joy that once more r .he
Sacred College is filled to its full
complement, and particularly that
prelates from many more nations
will partiepate in its deliberations.
