CHICAGO METHODIST LEADER FELICITATES ARCHBISHOP STRITCH (By Kelisious News Service) CHICAGO A letter of con gratulation has been written by Bishop J. Ralph Magee, resident Methodist bishop here, to Arch bishop Stritch of Chicago who was A named lo the College of Cardinals by Rope Pius XII. Text ol the letter follows: "As the Bishop of the Chicago area of the Methodist Church I desire to join in the expression of congratulations to you and to your Archdiocese in the forthcoming cardinalate. "Your ability as a leader of your people has been thus recognized. The place of prominence of your Archdiocese has also been establ ished in your Church once again "As Ihe bishop of a church of 400,000 m e m bers and 1,600 churches in this area I join with others in recognition of this great honor. r ■ “The spiritual success of any one Christian body if rightly used becomes a spiritual impetus to all religious bodies. "May God richly bless you in the midst of your added honors and responsibilities.” Myrtl'e Beach USO Club to Stage Boxing Tournament MYRTLE BEACH. S. C.—In co operation with Capt. Paul Dick- mann, Special Officer at the Myr tle Beach Army Air Field, James J. MeAndrewsI director of the USO-NCCS Club has scheduled a boxing tournament for January 24, 25 and 26. Boxers from the Air Base and from neighboring towns have been invited to compete for valuable prizes which will be awarded the winners and for Hie opportunity of qualifying for the North Caro lina Goldei Gloves Tournament in February. Expert boxing instruction is be ing given entrants in the contest by a top-notch professional mid dle-weight boxer, in preparation for the tournament. Miss Virginia Prim was chosen as queen of the March of Dimes Ball given at the USO-NCCS Club at Myrtle Beach. Hostesses from the USO-NCCS Club who visited the Base Hospi tal recently to distribute candy, cakes, cigazets, fruits and nuts to the patients were Misses Pearlie Mae Hewitt, Edna Foxworth, Lu cille Jordan. Virginia Prim, Jane Grail and Betty Burroughs. Miss Emile May Wilson, assistant di rector of the club, accompanied ihe group. G.—A Triduum in honor of the Blessed Virgin, under her title of the Immaculate Conception, was held at St. Francis dc Sales Church. Special Masses were offered each morning and devotions were held each evening. At the services on*the first evening, the Rev. Wil liam G. Doyle, of the U. S. Army Chaplain Corps, formerly of SI. Mary’s Church. Charleston, led the recitation of the rosary. The ser mon was delivered by the Rev. John L. Barry, S. J., formerly of the faculty of Boston College, al so an Army chaplain, and Bene diction of the Blessed Sacrament was given by the Rev. John F. Cullelon, senior Catholic chaplain at Fort Jackson. At the services the second night Chaplain Edmund C. Blough led the recitation of the rosary; the sermon, on “Prayer to Mary,” was delivered by the Rev. Michael F. Goldrick, O. P., formerly of the Dominican College, Washington, D. C., and now an Army chaplain, and Benediction was given by the Right Rev. Msgr. Martin, C. Mur phy, V. F., pastor of St. Peter's Church in Columbia. At the services on the conclud ing night of the Triduum, the Rev. Gerald M. O’Dowd, O. P., pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Columbia, said the rosary: the ser mon, on “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament,” was delivered by the Rev. Leonard E. Bogolin, O. F. M„ U. S. Army chaplain.-formerly of Franciscan Seminary, Lemont, II iinois. Benediction was given by the Rev. Richard C. Madden, ad minis!rulor of St. Francis do Sales parish. Upon the departure of the Rev. Thomas J. Mackin, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, for Charleston, where he was to be resident chaplain at St. Francis Xavier infirmary, Mrs. Henry Met’- ritt, president of the Altar Society, presented Father Maclcin with a substantial purse as an expression of appreciation on Ihe part of the members of the Altar Society for his years of service to the parish. 19.000 AT RALLY TO BACK FRANK FAY NEW YORVC. Laski, British Labor party leader, lor his speech last September criticizing Vatican policy in Spain. The rally was called to protest Actors Equity censure of Mr. Fay after the lat ter objected to participation by five fellow Equity members in the Madisc Square Garden meet ing at which Mr. Laski’s speech was heard.
