ANNUAL REPORT OF ST. MARY’S HOME, SAVANNAH
Sisters of Mercy Offer Shelter to
Eighty-Eight Girls During Year
SAVANNAH, Ga., — The fol
lowing report was submitted to
the annual meeting of the Fe
male Orphan Benevolent So
ciety, by the Sisters of Mercy
who conduct St. Mary’s Home.
During the past year. St. Mary’s
Home has sheltered eighty-eight
young girls.
Twenty-nine of these children
have been returned to their homes
at the request of their relatives
who are now in circumstances
which enable them to care tor
their children One of the older
girls, who completed her educa
tion, acSepted a position at St.
Joseph's Hospital.
Through the generosity of bene
factors, a large part of the spacious
back garden was made into a play
ground which leaves nothing to be
desired for outdoor recreation.
Swings, see-saws, sliding boards,
and gym lings have been in con
stant use since they were put in
place some time ago
A new motion picture machine
was purchased and the children
were treated to several pictures
each month through the courtesy
of the Cathedral and Blessed
Sacrament schools.
Because of the splendid care
given to the children by our doc
tors, the health record of St.
Mary’s Home ranks highest in the
city. Other than a slight epidemic
of chicken-pox which kept some of
the younger children isolated for a
lew days, no sickness Invaded St.
Joseph's Home during the ,,ast
year.
A modified form of student
government was introduced ‘his
year and it has proven very bene
ficial in developing a sense of res
ponsibility and loyalty in the older
girls and cooperation and
obedience in the younger ones.
