THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN'S ASSOCIATION
OF GEORGIA
To Build Another Addition to
St. Mary's Hospital, Athens
(Special to The Bulletin)
ATHENS, Ga., — To meet the
ever increasing demand for its
services, St. Mary's Hospital, con
ducted by the Missionary Sisters
of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, in
Athens, is making an addition to
the wing, known a^ St. Joseph’s
Hall, which was added to the hos
pital in 1941.
This latest addition to the hos
pital will be constructed of con
crete blocks, with a brick veneer,
on a steel framework. Homer
Nicholoson, of Athens, is the
architect, and the Mathis Con
struction Company has been
awarded the bilding contract.
The Missionary Sisters of the
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus came
to Athens in 1938 to take over the
operation of a privately owned
hospital property here which had
been acquired by the Most Rev.
Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D., J. U. D.,
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta.
Tlie original hospital was found
ed some thirty years ago by Dr.
J. P. Proctor and Dr. H. M. Fulli-
love, who were joint owners of the
property for some years. Upon the
death of Dr. Proctor, Dr. Fullilove
became the owner and operator of
the hospital until his death in
1935. It was then operated for
about two years by Dr. Proctor’s
widow.
At the time the Sisters came to
Athens, at the invitation of Bishop
O’Hara, the original hospital build
ing was completely renovated and
modernized. The four-story St.
Joseph’s Hall, which was erected
in 1941 greatly increased the ac
comodations for patients and fur
ther improved the operating
rooms, kitchen and other hospital
essentials, thus giving greater op
portunity for hospitalization in the
Athens area.
Since then, the hospital has
been continually crowded. To rem
edy that condition, this new ad
dition is being started. It will fur
ther modernize and improve the
hospital as it will provide space
for two operating rooms, two
laboratories and fifteen private
rooms, bringing the number of
beds available for patients to near
ly one hundred.
St. Mary's Hospital has been a
great contributing factor to the
well being of Athens and North
east Georgia. It has been efficient
ly operated and has offered its
services to charity and to paying
patients without distinction.
Sister Wilfrieda, . one of the
original group of Sisters who came
to Athens in 1938, has returned
as Superior, to succeed Sister
Bertha, who has been transferred
to one of the hospitals operated by
the Missonary Sisters of Most
Sacred Heart in Indiana.
