cil of Catholic Women met at the
General Forrest Hotel in Rome,
on September 8th, with Miss Jane
Fahy, president of the Rome
Council as hostess. Mrs. George
Gunning, Deanery Council .presi
dent, of Atlanta, presided.
New Deanery Council standing
committee chairmen, announced at
the meeting, will be Miss Doreen
McMahon. Library and Literature;
Mrs. R. Patron, Family Life and
Parent Education; Mrs. Walpole
Otis, International Relations: Mrs.
James A. Smith, Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine: Mrs. W. J.
McAlpin, Organization and De

The meeting was devoted to a
discussion of the activity of the
Deanery and the Diocean Coun
cil.
Robert E. McCormack, of
Albany, Heads Alumni or
St. Bernard’s College

ST. BERNARD, Ala, — Robert
E. McCormack, of Albany. Ga.,
was elected president of the St.
Bernard College Alumni Associ
ation at its first large alumni
meeting held since before the
war. More than a hundred were
gathered at the banquet which
featured the meeting, and at
which Mr. McCormack acted as
toastmaster.
At the close of the meeting, Mr.
McCormack was elected presi
dent, and Thomas McGough, of
Florence, Ala., vice-president. The
Very Rev. Lambert Gattman, O.
S. B., was appointed secretary-
treasurer by the Right Rev. Bon
iface Seng, O. S. B„ Abbot of St.
Bernard and President of the
college. Father Daniel Harris, O,
S. B., was appointed assistant sec
retary-treasurer.
Mr. McCormack, who was re
cently honored, with Knighthood
in tile Order of Saint Sylvester,
by His Holiness Pope Pius XII,
is a life-member of St. Bernard
Alumni Association and of the
Sigma Beta Kappa fraternity. He
was a generous contributor to the
St. Bernard Expansion Fund, and
he and Mrs. McCormack have
been benefactors and .sponsors of
the school band.
THREE NEW SCHOOLS OPEN
IN DIOCESE OF RALEIGH

Parishes in which the new
grammar schools were established
are St. Francis de Sales and St.
Madaleine-Sophie Barat, in Lum-
berton, and St. Peter’s, in Green
ville.
Sisters Adorers of the Most
Precious Blood, who will teach in
these schools also conducted Holy
Trinity School, in Kinston, which
is reopening this year with the
addition of another grade and kin
dergarten.
GOLDSBORO PARISH GUILD
INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS
GOLDSBORO. N. C.—At the
September meeting of St. Mary's
Catholic Guild, Father Lawrence
C. Newman, pastor of St. Mary's
Church, and honorary president
of the guild, installed the new
officers: Mrs. John Shine, presi
dent; Mrs. Michael Mansour, vice
president; Mrs. James Kannan,
secretary, and Mrs. A. F. Carrere,
treasurer.
A group of girls of St. Mary’s
parish has become affiliated with
St. Mary’s Catholic Guild to work
as a unit of that organization.
Miss Rosette Parlour, general
organizing chairman, and Miss
Marian Raine, spoke on plans for
the junior unit at a joint meeting
of the two groups...
Tlie first venture of the Jun
ior Unit was to sponsor a, wel
come party for members of the
parish returning from the allied
forces and for newcomers to Golds
boro. Mrs. Victoria Baddour and
Mrs. Howard Starlt, were hostesses
at the social hour which followed
the meeting.

Fred Mills Elected
President of C. L. A.
Branch in Albany

ALBANY, Ga.—Frederick War
ren Mills has been elected presi
dent of the Albany Branch of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia to succeed Fred Wiggins,
who has headed the local branch
of the state-wide association for
tlie last two years. Mr. Wiggins,
one of the founders of the Lay
men's Association, had previously
served several terms as president
of the branch in Albany. He is
at present a member of tlie
executive board of the slate organ
ization.
Mr. Mills, the new president
of the Albany Branch, was born in
Minneapolis, Minn., June 15, 1900,
the son of Christopher A. Mills
and Mrs. Bridget Keough Mills.
He attended the parochial schools
in Minneapolis.
Since coining to Albany in 193(1.
Mr. Mills has become one of
this city’s leading business execu
tives. He is president of the
Modern Couch Corporation, for
merly Georgia Stages, an affiliate
of National Trallways. I iis expert
knowledge lias led to his being
chosen chairman of the National
Safety Council of National Trail-
ways. He is also serving as a
member of the board of directors
of several large bus terminals
throughout Ihe country.
Mr. Mills is a director of tlie
Bank of Albany, a member of tlie
Albany Chamber of Commerce,
and a member of similar civic
groups in other cities of Georgja
and Florida. He is one of the
loading members of Albany, Inc.,
a new organization which lias been
formed lor the purpose of bring
ing new industries to the city.
He is part owner of Ihe Office
Supply Company in Albany and
has an interest in several res
taurants that are operated in term
inals of the National Trailways
Bus System.
A member of tlie Holy Name So
ciety of St. Theresa’s parish, he
took a prominent part in the plan
for opening a Catholic school
here. Active in the work of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association, his
tenure of office as head of the
local branch should be mod fruit
ful.

Branch, are Mrs. K. M. Russ, sec
retary, and Mrs. F. V. Lewis,
treasurer, both of whom w'ere re
elected.
Members of the Albany Branch
are making plans to attend Ihe
annual convention of the Lay
men’s Association in Savannah
next month in full.
The Albany Branch will be well
represented at the annual con
vention of (he Laymen’s Associa
tion which will be held in Savan
nah next month. According to
plans now being perfected, buses
will be chartered to take the
local delegation lo Savannah and
return.
BENEFIT BARBECUE
GIVEN IN’ ALBANY
ALBANY. Ga.—The Altar So
ciety of St. Theresa’s Church
sponsored a benefit barbecue on
September 25. During tlie last
month the Altar Society purchased
an electric washing machine for
Sisters. Adorers of the Most
Precious Blood, who teach in the
parochial school, and have had
the convent chapel redecorated
and improved.
GEORGIA MARBLE is being
used to replace much of the old
marble in New York City’s Jahious
St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which is
bing renovated at a cost of about
$2,000,000.

CONFER DEGREES
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Patrick Walsh
Council, Knights of Columbus,
conferred the first, second and
third degrees on a large class of
candidates on September 8, the
class being named the "Monsignor
Grady Class’’ in honor of Mon
signor James J. Grady, pastor
of St. Mary’s-on-The-Hill Church
and lecturer of the council.

rick Connell, of the Diocese of
Rochester, serving temporarily in
the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta.
was welcomed to Augusta, where

tory on the evening of Sept. 5th.
