COLUMoUS, Ga.—At the an
nual meeting of the Columbus
Branch of the Catholic Laymen s
Association of Georgia. Dr. Arthur
N. Berry was elected president of
the local branch of the state-wide
association, succeeding Henry J.
Murphy, who lias headed tlie Co
lumbus Branch since 3 941.
M. D. Streaker was elecled vice-
president, white Mrs. John B.
Byrne, secretary, and .Mr. George
R. Connor, treasurer, were re
elected to thoie offices.
The names of the new officers
of the local branch were presented
to the meeting by a nominating
committee composed of Mr. and
Mrs. J. Mark Mote and Mrs.-Henry
J. Murphy.
Father Herman Deimel, pastor
of Holy Family Church, opened
the meeting with prayer, and
spoke from the background of a
Catholic family in the Georgia
mission field, wdiere priestly visits
were infrequent and the oppor-
I unity for religious were infre
quent and there was scant oppor
tunity for religious instruction.
Hugh Kinchley, of Augusta,
executive secretary of the Catholic
Laymen’s Association of Georgia,
spoke informally, tracing the his
tory of the association and out
lining some of the plans for its
activity in the future.
A telegram of greeting to the
meeting from Bernard J. Fahy,
of Home, president of the Lay
men’s Association, was read by
Mr. Murphy, who presided.
Mrs. Byrne, in submitting her
report as secretary of the Colum
bus Branch, gratefully acknowl
edged the contributions made to
the the Laymen’s Association by
members of I he Holy Family par
ish. with special (hanks to Father
Deimel. J, Mark Mote. Louis C.
Kunze, Frank X. Profumo. Rich
ard II. Fleming. William Pfaft. Jr.,
W. J. Weaver. Mrs. H. C. Smith
and Mrs. M. L. Woodruff for the
assistance they had given the of
ficers of the local branch.
Dr. Berry’, the new president of
(he Columbus Branch, was born
in Columbus, July 13. 1904, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Turner E.
Berry. He attended local schools
and after graduating from
Sewanee Military Academy in
1922, entered the Unniversity of
the South, Sewanee, Tenn., re
ceiving his A. B. degree in 1926.
He graduated from the Medical
School of Harvard University, in
1930.
After serving internships at
Hie Free Hospital for Women,
Brookline. Mass., and at the Peter
Brent Brigham Hospital and the
Boston Lying-In Hospital, in Bos
ton, Mass.. Dr. Berry began the
practice of medicine in Columbus
in 1933.
In 1942, he volunteered for mili
tary service. and was commis
sioned a captain in the Army Med
ical Corps. After serving at Me-
Dill Field, Tampa, Fla.. Key Field,
Meridian. Miss., and the Charles
ton Army Air Base, Charleston, S.
C.. he went overseas in March,
1944. with the 51st General Hos
pital. iL served through the
New Guinea and Philippine cam
paigns with the rank of major
and a chief of the surgical section
of the 51st General Hospital. He
was released from active military
duty in November of last year,
at Fort McPherson, in Atlanta.
He is now associated in the prac
tice of medicine with Dr. Hugh J.
Bickeilaff in Columbus, special
izing in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Berry was received into the
Catholic Church on Holy Satur
day, in 1944, at Milne Bay, Now
Guinea.
In 1931. he married Miss Doro
thea Keough, of Boston. They
