Parochial School
Reopens in Albany
(Special to The Bulletin)
ALBANY, Ga — St. Theresa’s
Parochial School reopened on
September* 3 with an enrollment
of eighty-eight pupils, a consid
erable increase over the enroll
ment last year. - Consisting of
seven grades of grammar school
and a kindergarten, the school is
housed in a former residence
which has been reconverted into
a school. There are four class
rooms, a lunch room, a kitchen
and rest rooms in the building.
The faculty is composed of Sis
ters Adorers of the Most Precious
Blood. Sister Mary Louise, the
principal, teaches the seventh
grade; Sister Anita , the kinder
garten; Sister Eugene, the first
and second grades; Sister Jean
Marie, the third and fourth
grades, and Sister Mary Vincent,
the fifth and sixth grades.
During the summer vacation,
members of the faculty took spec
ial courses in teaching methods,
with Sister Anita and Sister Jean
Marie at the Motherhouse of the
Sisters Adorers of the Most Prec
ious Blood, in Columbia, Pa., Sis
ter Eugene and Sister Vincent at
. De Paul University, Chicago, and
Sister Mary Louise, at Duquesne
University, Pittsburgh.

the beginning of the school year
on a tour of inspection.
PARENT-TEACHER
ASSOCIATION MEETS
The first fall meeting of the
Parent-Teacher Association of St.
Theresa's School was held on
September 11, and the following
new officers were welcomed: Mrs.
M. M. Wiggins, president; Mrs. C.
V. Home, vice-president; Mrs.
Ray Pinkston, secretary; Mrs.
John Reynolds, treasurer Mrs.
R. D. McKenzie, auditor, and Mrs.
E. H. Bareficld, historian.
Committee chairmen appointed
were Mrs. K. M. Russ and Mrs.
John D. Paulk, program commit
tee; Mrs. A. F. Halback and Mrs.
B. B. Williams, hospitality com
mittee; Mrs. E. G. Hightower,

Plans for various activities dur
ing the year were discussed. It
was voted to sponsor a Hallowe’en
Home Mission Apostolate
Revived in North Carolina

RALEIGH. N. C.—The Most
Rev. Vincent S. Waters, D. D.,
Bishop of Raleigh, has announced
that the North Carolina Home
Mission Aposolate has been ftilly
revived.
This revival has taken place in
a two-fold manner. First a com
mittee was formed in January of
this year, which would devote it
self to securing funds outside the
Diocese for Jhis missionary work.
Monsignor John Manley and Mon
signor Peter McNerney were given
charge of this important diocesan
work. Secondly, a Home Mission
plan of the Diocese of Buffalo has
been adapted to the needs in
North Carolina, and Father Frank
Howard has been appointed Su
perior of the Home Mission
Apostolate, with headquarters at
Whiteville, and has been given
Father Frank McCarthy and
Father Paul Byron as associate
mis.tioners.
According to the plan, these
priests will be in residence at
Whiteville the first four days of
the week, and during the remain
der of each week will work out
of one of the mission chapels of
the Whiteville territory.
BENEDICTINE SCHOOL
GRADUATE PROMOTED
SAVANNAH, Ga,—Captain
James W. George, a graduate of
Benedictine Miiltary School, was
recently advanced to that rank
from that of first lieutenant, ac
cording to an announcement made
by the commanding general of
the Army Medical Center and
Walter Reed Hospital in Wash
ington.
Formerly of Savannah, Captain
George is detachment commander
and assistant commander of troops
of the Army Medical Center. He
entered the service in 1941 and
served overseas for nineteen
months with the 101st Airborne
Infantry. He was awarded the
Silver Star Medal for the evacua
tion of wounded soldiers under
intense* enemy fire, and the
Bronze Star for heroic achivement.
He wears four battle stars for ser
vice in Southern France, Cen
tral Europe, the Ardennes and the
Rhineland.

tion” on The Catholic Hour pro
gram during November.
The Catholic Hour, produced
by the National Council of Catho
lic Men. in cooperation with the
National Broadcast Company, is
broadcast each Sunday evening.

Church in Americus

Minister Provinical of the Order
of Friars Minor, of the Province
of the Most Holy Name, in New
York, has announced that Father
Thomas A. Albert. O. F. M., assis
tant pastor of St. Mary’s Church,
Americus, for the last two years,
has been assigned to St. Francis
of Assisi Monastery. New York
City, and that Father Joseph B.
Wider, O. F. M., who has served
for the past year as assistant at
St. Mary’s and in charge of St.
Jerome's Colored Mission here,
has been assigned to Siena Col
lege, Loudonville, N. Y.
Father Aloysius J. Hopkins, O.
F. M., replaces Father Thomas.'
as assistant pastor of St. Mary’s
Church. Americus. and the mis
sions in Cordele and Tifton, and
Father Stephen G. McMahon, O.
F. M., replaces- Father Joseph at
the Colored Mission here. Father
Godfrey A. Weitekamp, O. F. M.,
continues as pastor of the local
parish and its missions.
Both Father Alovsius and Fath
er Stephen are from Phiiadelphia,
and both were ordained bv the
Most Rev. Amleto Giovanni Cicog-
nani, Apostolics Delegate to the
United States, on June 17, 1945,
at the Franciscan Monastery in
Washington. D. C. They attended
parochial schools in Philadelphia,
St. Joseph’s Seminary, Gallicoon,
N. Y„ and the various houses of
study of the Franciscan Province
of the Holy Name.
Both hold masters degrees from
St. Bonaventure’s College, Bon-
aventure, N. Y. Father Aloysius
was previously stationed at St.
Bonaventure’s Monastery, Pater
son, N. J., and Father Stephen
comes to Americus from Holy
Name College, Washington, D. C.
The Altar Society of St. Mary’s
Church recently sponsored a most
successful barbecue supper, which
was served on the church lawn.
Mrs. J. H. Thurman was chair
man of the committee in charge.
On October 4. the Altar Society
wil sponsor a benefit card party,
with Mrs. Katherine Shy Long
heading the committee in charge.

Maher, Congr. Orat., assisting in
the sanctuary.
Miss Agnes Heffernan was her
sister’s maid of honor, and Anne
Smith, the bride’s niece, was the
flower girl. Henry Heffernan,
brother of the bride, was the best
man, while William Heffernan,
Jr„ and Joseph Heffei-rian, also
her brothers, and Harold Geradot
and Walter Smith, t her brothers-
in-law, were ushers.
Music during the ceremony and
Mass was rendered by Mrs. Hugh
Kinchley, violinist, and Miss Ag
nes Gouley at the organ, with Miss
Teresa Punaro as vocal soloist.
Following the ceremony, a recep
tion was held at the home of the
bride’s parents.
Dr. O’Brien, a graduate of the
School of Dentistry at George
town University, was recently re
leased from active duty after ser
vice with the U. S. Army Dental
Corps for two years.

Arthur O'Hagen, of Sydney, Aus
tralia, announce the marriage of
their sister. Miss Patricia Jose
phine O’Hagen, to Mr. Jesse Bran-
nen, of Atlanta, at St. Mary’s
Cathedral, San Francisco, on Sep
tember 11.
Mr. Brannen is the son of Mrs.
Cecilia Brannen and the late
Jesse E. Brannen. On his maternal
side, he is descended from the
Voorhis and Westervclt families
of New Jersey. On his paternal
side, he comes from a pioneer
family of Bullock County. His
paternal grandmother is Mrs.
John F. Brannen, of Statesboro.
He served overseas for forty
months with an anti-aircraft
unit.
