Record Enrollment as
Belmont Abbey College
Scholastic Year Opens
BELMONT, N. C. — Belmont
Abbey College has registered
more than 300 students for the
current scholastic year, the larg
est enrollment in the history of
the institution, the registrar’s of
fice of the college has announc
ed. Taxing the capacity of the
college, the 300 students accep
ted were selected from more than
500 applicants.
While veterans will number
about half of the students and ac
count for tile large enrollment,
there is an overwhelming enroll
ment of regular college students,
with applications still being re
ceived and registrations being
made for the 1947-48 school year.
The greater portion of the vet
erans students are from North
Carolina, but every state on the
Atlantic seaboard is represented
as well as the Midwestern and
Far Western states, making the
student population quite nation
al and cosmopolitan. Among (he
regular students will be included
representatives from five South
American nations, Ireland, Italy
and Guam, tas well as from more
than twenty* of the United States.
The colle’ge is well prepared for
the increased enrollment. Father
Cuthbert E. Allen, O. S. B., rec
tor of the college, stated. With
an augmented faculty and an ex
pansion program that is being
completed, Father Cuthbert ex
plained. , The pre-war campus ac
tivities will be resumed, he said,
in intercollegiate sports, music
and glee clubs, scholastic organi
zations and social programs.
COMPLETING RENOVATION
OF COLLEGE BUILDINGS
Expansion and renovation of
'class rooms and dormitories is
nearing completion. Construction
work, which has been in progress
since the close of the school term
last June, has cost an estimated
$60,000.
Anticipation of a capacity en
rollment for the 1946-47 sessions
necessitated many changes and
modernizations at the college.
During the last three months new
dormitory space to accomodate a
hundred students has 'been pro
vided. New and larger class
room.'; will be available and study
halls have'been enlarged to take
care of the increased student
body.
New equipment has been in
stalled in the recreation rooms
and the gymnasium is ready for
indoor sports and intercollegiate
competition.
A new organ has been install
ed in the Abbey Cathedral, and
all construction work should be
completed in time for the open
ing day of the school year.
