TITO AND FRANCO
Tito, the Communist dictator of
Yugoslavia, has caused American
planes to be shot down in cold
blood; he has not only defended
the murder of American aviators
on peaceful missions but has in
solently rejected United States
demands for indemnity. He warns

SACRIFICING FOR SCHOOLS
The statement from Catholic
News, printed in the News and
Courier last Sunday, that in the
48 states and the District of Co
lumbia the Catholic parochial
schools save to the American tax
payers $318,146,291 in a year is
worth the thought of the Ameri-
v cans. The Roman Catholics pay
taxes, as other people do, to sup
port the public schools, to pay
their teachers, to build and main
tain the public school houses.
Enrolled in the Catholic schools
of the United States are 2,399,908
children, and of them are 2,451 in
South Carolina.
The saving in money to the tax
payers in general by the Catholic
people in supporting these schools,
is not the whole or chief gain to
the Americans. It is heartening
to know that some of the people
believe that the Christian religion
should be taught in the schools,
however many persons have the
right to think to the contrary.
In the parochial or church
school the personal relation be
tween teacher and pupil is closer
than in the public schools. Educa
tion in the public schools is, in a
sense, mass production, and this
especially is and must be so in
great cities of conglomerate pop
ulation. In a large public school
containing children whose parents
are of a score of sects, the teacher
must be on guard lest if she ven
ture to give religious advice it
may run counter to what some of
the parents believe. More ahd
more, however it may not be true
of village or rural schools or
other schools, in South Carolina,
the public schools are steering
away from religion, from affirma
tion of its existence.
Not all the parochial schools are
Catholic. Many other denomina
tions have them. The Catholics
are the church of the greatest
numbers in the United States, but
that is no reason that other
churches should not establish and
maintain schools. One reads much
distressing news about “juvenile
delinquency”, and the News and
Courier is so old-fashioned—
“reactionary" and “fossilized” if
those adjectives be preferred—to
believe and to say that the preven
tion of it is best effected by the
teaching of the “old-time reli
gion in the schools of the young
as well as in the homes of the
young.
To carry on our great public
school system in South Carolina
and the parochial schools too
would entail great sacrifices on
the Protestant people. The re
sults would be worth the sacri
fices. The Roman Catholic people
are making them.—The News and
Courier, Charleston.
which find themselves over Yugo
slavian territory will suffer the
same fate.
Th£ response of American Com
munists and fellow-travelers to
this barbarous treatment at the
hands of an “Ally” to whom we
have sent $200,000,000 worth of
food and other supplies is renew
ed demands that the United
States depose as a menace to the
peace of the world the Franco re
gime in Spain.
The deepening of this agitation
at this time is calculated to divert
the attention of the American
people from the tactics of the
Communist in Yugoslavia, in Po
land, throughout the Baltic and
the Balkan States, in China, Ja
pan and innumerable other places.
It is intended to make us less at
tentive to. the warnings of com
munistic activity we are receiv
ing from General MacArth'ur in
Japan, General Hodges in Korea,
and other leaders elsewhere in
the world.

because they happened to be over
Spanish territory! Suppose it
were Franco who had insolent
ly rejected demands for indemni
ty and promised that any other
American planes happening over
Spain would be blasted! As a
matter of fact', American planes
have made forced landings in
Spain, and the Franco govern
ment gave our men hospitality.
Who is the greater menace to
peace, Franco or Tito? Why do
Communists in the United States
defend Tito while berating Fran
co? The answer is simple: They
are following the orders of Mos
cow.—(The Catholic News)
Arrested by Tito
Archbishop Aloysius Stepinac,

Croatia, who has been arrested by
agents of the Tito regime in Yugo
slavia and charged with “crimes
against the people.” Native-born,
he was ordained in 1930 and only
four years later, at the age of 36,
was consecrated an Archbishop.
He was an outspoken foe of the

“COMMUNISM IN ACTION"
You will excuse, we are sure,
the start of surprise and the smile
of self-satisfaction that we experi
enced on September 1. That
morning, we read -the description
of the booklet, “Communism in
Action”, prinled on Government
presses by order of Congress un
der the sponsorship of Represen
tative Dirksen, of Illinois. It was
prepared by the staff of the Leg
islative Reference Service of the
Library of Congress, in answer to
requests the Congressman had
had for “a short, simple treatise
on how communism operates,”
which would not “employ a heav
ily slanted or biased approach."
The booklet, among other aspects
of the study, remarks that athe
ism is a fundamental doctrine of
the communist party, quotes Ar
ticle 124 on freedom of religion
and comments:
If applied to American life this
provision would eliminate the
publication of all church litera
ture, including Bibles, prayer
books, church-school publications,
periodicals and the like. It would
also prevent the administration of
any type of social-service work in
the name of the church. Paro
chial schools would not be per
mitted, and religious forces would
not be able to counterbalance out
wardly the attacks of atheistic
groups.
Our surprise is that a semi
official document of this nature
states openly what this Review
(and hence the self-satisfaction)
has been reporting for years. We
wonder—what will the “Liberals”,
who visit Russia and come home
to report full religious “Liberty”,
do now, poor things?—(America).

After seven years of painstaking experimenta
tion, in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the
Wright Brothers succeeded in flying their power
driven aeroplane for a distance of 633 feet... a
fabulous distance at that time! But, think of this
. .. sixlytwoo full years before this remarkable
achievement — yes, even ’way back then —
Claus sen's was producing bakery goods of out
standing merit!
Yes, behind every Claussen’s product of today
lies a splendid baking bistory of 105 experience-
packed years! And — today, Clausaen’a still
resolutely follows rigid principles set by the
Founder back in 1841 — that only the finest
ingredients be used; that newest bakery methods
be adopted; that the most modern bakery equip
ment be installed!
Accordingly, Claus sett's has amassed an over*
whelming amount of the necessary skill... tho
“know-how” to produce tho utmost in flavor,
freshness and uniformly high quality! It’s no
wonder then that the term “Claussen’s Quality”
has become a standard by which any fine bakery;
product may be judged!
