MARTIN J. CALLAGHAN
One of the original group of
Catholic Laymen who met in Ma
con thirty years ago to organize
the Catholic laymen’s Association
of Georgia, Martin J. Callaghan,
of Macon, served as vice-president
of the Association from 1940 un
til last year when he was elected
honorary vice-president. His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII bestowed the
Papal Medal “Pro Ecclesia ct Pon-
tifice” on Mr. Callaghan several
years ago. and this year honored
him with Knighthood in the Order
of St. Gregory. %

Gregorian Study Club in
Douglas, Hold Meetings

DOUGLAS, Ga. — Mrs. A. C.
Hanna was hostess on the evening
of October 7. at the parish hall, to
a joint meeting of the Altar So
ciety of St. Paul’s Church and the
Greogirian Study Club. The
joint session was conducted by
Mrs. James Nahra, president of
the altar society, and by Father
Frederick V- Gilbert, O. M. I„
pastor of St. Paul’s Church.
Father Gilbert stressed the de
votion of the “family Rosary", and
suggested that the society spon
sor a family Communion Sunday
at least three times a year. He also
urged more frequent attendance at
Mass during the week. \
A report was made on the re
cent meeting of the Columbus
Deanery Council of the National
Council of Catholic Women, Of
which Miss Sue Hanna, of Doug
las, is secretary, and Mrs. Frank
Hanna, chairman of the Con
fraternity of Christian Doctrine.
Mrs. A. C. Hanna and Mrs. Ellis
Hanna were appointed co-chair
men of the committee to arrange
for a Hallowe'en party, and.it was
announced that ten new books had
been added lo the parish library.
“Books of the Bible" were dis
cussed by. the Study Club, and
Mrs. Frank Hanna won the prize
in the quiz program. Following
the meeting refreshments were
served by the hostess.
Members of the Altar Society
entertained Father Charles Reiner,
O. S. B., and th<? football squad
from St. Bernard’s College, in
Alabama, following their football
game with South Georgia College
here.
Mrs. R. B. White was appointed
hostess for the next meeting of
the Altar Soicety.

Association of Georgia, in Atlanta,
and active in its work since he
was received into the Church some
years ago, Estes Doiemus. Atlanta
attorney, was elected vice-presi
dent of the Association at the con
vention held last year.

GIVES SILVER TEA
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Parent-
Teacher Association of Christ the
King School entertained will) a
silver tea on the afternoon of Octo
ber 20 at the convent on East
Wesley Road.
Mrs. Thomas Clarke, president
of the P.-T. A., received the guests
with the Grey Nuns of the Sacred
Heart who compose the teaching
staff of the school. Other officers
of the P.-T. A. who assisted in
serving the guests, were, Mrs.
George Biggers, Jr., Mrs. Gordon
Hiles, Jr., Mrs. Robert Johnson
and Mrs. E. W Welker.
The reception rooms were at
tractively decorated with magnolia
leaves and yellow chrysanthe
mums. On the tea table was an
antique brass samovar with match
ing brass candlesticks.
HENRY J. HEFFERNAN
RESUMES PRACTICE
OF LAW IN AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Henry J, Hef-
fernan, who served as a majqr in
the Judge Advocate General’s De
partment of the U. S. Army dur
ing the war, has resumed the prac
tice of law in Augusta.
Hie entered active service in
July, 1942. and a second lieu
tenant, military intelligence '• ser
vice, and served on the staff of
the camp commander at Camp
Butner, N. C., as director of the
intelligene unit. In May, 1943,
he was transferred to the Judge
Advocate Qeperaf's Department,
and served with the Army Claims
Service in France, Holland, Bel
gium and Switzerland. From Feb
ruary, 1.946 to May, 1946, he
served on a special mission lor
the United States Ambassador to
Switzerland in connection with
claims arising from the forced
landing of American aircraft and
mistaken bombardment.
Mr. Heffcrnan was promoted to
first lieutenant in November, 1942;
to captain in October, 1943, and to
the rank of major in February,
1945.
He received the Battle Star for
the Battle of the Rhineland and
was awarded the Bronze Star for
mcritdrious service in France and
Holland.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam J. Heffernan, of Augusta, lie
is a member of St. Mary’s-on-Thc
Hill Parish. *
NEW INSTRUMENTS FOR
SAVANNAH SCHOOL BAND
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Musicians
at the Benedictine Military School
are thrilled with delight at the
arrival of a complete set of instru
ments for a thirty-one-piece band,
issued to the R. O. T. C. unit at
the^school by the United States
Army.
Witli the new equipment 'and -
under the capable direction of
Oscar McClellan, the Benedictine
band gives promise of becoming
one of the finest musical organi
zations in the city.
Cadet Captain Madison Brower
is the commanding officer of the
Benedictine Cadets’ band, with
Cadet Lieutenant Jack McAlcer,
second in command.
