Leave Belmont Convent for
Missions on Island of Guam
(Special (o The Bulletin)
BELMONT, N. C. — On Octo
ber 6, an impressive departure
ceremony was Jield in the chapel
of the Sacred Heart Convent,
when three Sisters of Mercy of
Belmont, left for their labors in
the mission field, on the Island of
Guam, in the far Pacific.
The Itinerarium, the ancient
formula of prayers for those be
ginning a journey, followed by
Benediction of the Blessed Sac
rament, were the distinctive fea
tures of the ceremony.
The mission to Guam was ac
cepted when His Excellency, Most
Reverend Apollinaris Baumgart
ner, O. F. C., Vicar Apostolic to
Guam, made an appeal in person
to Reverend Mother Mary Maura,
Mother Superior of the Sisters of
Mercy of Belmont, to adopt Guam
as a mission of (lie Mother House
in Belmont. His Excellency re
quested that three Sisters he sent
to Guam to open a school and to
establish a Novitiate House in
which candidates for the Religious
Life could begin tlicir training.
The three Sisters chosen for
the mission ace Sister Mary Inez
Underwood, Sister Mary Louise
Welsenforth, and Sister Mary An

The departure ceremony held
for these three Sisters was the
first of its kind in the history of
the Sisters of Mercy in Belmont.
That history goes back to 1869.
when in answer to an appeal from
Bishop James Gibbons, of the
newly created Vicariate of North
Carolina, three Sisters of Mercy
from the infant foundation in
Charleston, South Carolina, came
to Wilmington. North Carolina, to
conduct a Catholic school in that
city. These tiiree Sisters; Sister
Mary Augustine Kent, Sister
Mary Charles Curtin, and Sister
Mary gaptist Sheehan, were the
pioneers of Catholic Schools in
North Carolina; they were the
nucleus of the Community that-
later established their Mother
House in Belmont.
From this Mother House in Bel
mont missions were opened
throughout the State and today in
North Carolina, the Sisters of
Mercy of Belmont conduct the fol
