CIVIC CLUB MEMBERS VISIT TRAPPIST ABBEY—Pictured above are members of the Rotary
Clubs of Covington and Conyers, Georgia, in the refectory of the Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Ghost,
established by the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, near Conyers, in March, 1944. At the extreme left,
is Dick Newel, president of the Carrollton Rotary Club; and standing at the center, near Father M. Simon,
Cherkauskes, O. C. S. O., guest master of the Abbey, is Dr. S. L. Waites, Mayor of Covington, and charter
president of the Covington Rotary Club. Members of the two Rotary Clubs are grouped about them. This
was one of the first “Know Georgia Better” meetings held by civic clubs. The-recent visit of the Rotorians

Army Planes Mercy Flight Saves Life of
Nursing Sister of Dillon Hospital Staff
(Special to The Bulletin
DILLON, S. C.—A mercy flight
by a C-47 Army plane from Pope
Field, N. C., is credited with sav
ing the life of Sister Maureen, a
nurse at St. Eugene’s Hospital, in
Dillon, who was flown to St.
Louis for an emergency operation
for complications arising from
pneumonia.
Dr. W. V. Branford, chief of
staff at St. Eugene’s Hospital,
telephoned Colonel Paul H. Pren
tiss, commanding officer at Pope
Field asking for the plane since
the patient was too ill to be mov
ed any distance either by train or
automobile, and there was immed
iate necessity for an operation for
which the hospital here did not
have the facilities. The plane land
ed at L.umberton, N. C., and pick
ed up the patient who had made
the short trip from Dillon in an
automobile. The flight to St. Louis
was made in four hours and ten
minutes.
Sister Mary Bernardette, su
perior of nurses at St. Eugene’s
Hospital, also made the trip to St.
Louis in the plane with £ister
Maureen and Dr. Branford.
Two nursing Sisters, from the
Motherhouse of the Sisters of St.
Mary of the Third Order of St.
Francis, in St. Louis, were flown
back to Lumberton in the plane
on its return trip to replace Sister
Mary Bernardette and Sister Mau
reen at the hospital here.
Lieutenant Leroy S. Dietrich
was pilot of the plane, Lieutenant
Douglas D. Melton, co-pilot, and
Sergeant Frank G. Duggan, was
crew chief.
FRANCIS J. HEAZEL, K. S. G.,
of Asheville, N. S. Supreme Treas
urer of the Knights of Colum
bus, placed a wreath at the base
of the statue of Christopher Co
lumbus on the Union Station
viaza in Washington, D. C., as a
/S rt of the observance of Golum-
bus Day in the Nation’s Capital,
and was principal speaker at the
banquet held at the Statler Hotel.
