Father Alfred Laube, S. M. A.,
Leaves Charleston for Tenafly, N. J

CHARLESTON, S. C. — Father
Alfred J. Laube, S. M. A., who for
the last several years has been
serving temporarily as assistant
pastor and acting pastor at Our
Lady of Mercy Church in Char
leston, and also as chaplain at
German prisoner of war camps in
this area, has left for St. Antho
ny's Mission House, Tenafly, N. L,
where lie will be co-editor, with
Father John Sweeney, S. M. A.,
of one of the publications of the
Society of African Missions.
Born in Alsace-Lorraine, in
1880, Father Laube was of Swiss
parentage, his father being super
intendent of schools in Ilindlin-
gen. Father Laube attended ele
mentary schools in his native city,
made his academic study at Maas
tricht, Holland, his classical course
at Clermont College, in France,
and his philosophical and theo
logical study at the seminary of
PANTS and SHIRTS
the African Missionary Fathers in
Lyons, France. By special dispen
sation of His Holiness Pope Leo
XIII, he was ordained in 1903, al
though under the canonical age
for ordination.
Father Laube first served in
Ireland, then in Egypt, where he
labored among the Arabs. His
health being impaired after three
years in Egypt, he returned to
France in 1907 where he remained
until he was sent to the United
States.
For more than twenty-five
years, Father Laube was stationed
in Augusta, Ga.. where he was
one of the founders of the Immac
ulate Conception parish. During
his stay in Augusta, where he was
pastor of the Colored parish from
1909 until 1938, Father Laube
was responsible for the erection
of a church, a rectory, a convent,
a school and a parish hall.
After leaving Augusta, he was
at St. Augustine Church, East
St. Louis, 111,, and at St. Bose
Church, Lima, Ohio, before com
ing to Charleston.

Dinner-Dance
Held in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—In observance
of Columbus Day, Patrick Walsh
Council, Knights of Columbus,
sponsored a banquet and dance at
the Richmond Hotel on the eve
ning of October 12, with Father
Patrick Connell, assistant, pastor
of St. Patrick's Church, as the
guest speaker.
Grand Knight Charles C. Ches
ser, who presided, welcomed the
members of the council and their
guests, and Joseph J. Slattery
acted as toastmaster. District
Deputy J. P. Price, who attended,
and the officers of Patrick Walsh
Council were introduced to the
assembled guests.
Arrangements for the banquet
and ball were made by a com
mittee headed by Monsignor
James J. Grady, lecturer of the
council, and including A1 Saun
ders, Joseph A. Mullarky, Paul
Hayes, Lawrence Ward. Jack
Johanssen. H. S. Ileslen, Bernard
J. Doris, John Chesser, and J. P.
Price.
The tables were artistically dec
orated by Mrs. Lawrence Ward,
Mrs. Alfred M. Battey, Mrs. J. P.
Price, Mrs. Paul Hayes and Miss
Anne Markwaltcr.
Dominican Fathers
Conduct Mission at
Port Wentworth Parish

SAVANNAH, Ga—Father Pat
rick Walsh, O. P., and Father D.
M. Burke, O. P., of the Mission
House of the Dominican Fathers,
in Columbia, S, C., conducted a
mission at Our Lady of Lourdes
Church. Port Wentworth, where
Father Daniel J. McCarthy is pas
tor, from September 29 to Octo
ber 6.
Brief instructions were given
by the missionary priests at the
Masses each morning and sermons
were delivered at the services
held each evening during the mis
sion.
PARENT-TEACHERS
MEET IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH. Ga.—Under the
direction ot Sister Marietta,
pupils of the second grade present
ed a delightful program at the
October meeting of the Parent-
Teacher Association of the Bless
ed Sacrament School.
Mrs. J. M. F. Ranitz, president,
announced that the Association
would sponsor a series of semi
monthly card parties, and that a
Hallowe’en party would be given
for the children of the school.
A round-table discussion of the
f lunch room program followed a
. brief talk bv Father James Con-
lin.

ing held here on October 10. Fath
er George Lewis Smith, pdslor of
St. Mary Help of Christians
Church. Aiken, and Superinten
dent of Hospitals for the Diocese
of Charleston, was elected presi
dent of the South Carolina State
Hospital Association, lo assume of
fice next year.
Father Smith, who has served
as first vice-president of the South
Carolina Stale Hospital Associa
tion for the last two years, is a
member of the administrative
board of the Catholic Hospital As
sociation of the Upited Slates and
Canada, and a former vice-presi
dent of the American Hospital As
sociation.
He was born in South River. N.
J. After attending high school and
college, he was connected with the
South River Trust Company for
two years. lie then entered the
New Jersey I.aw School, from
which lie graduated with high
honors and an LI,. B. degree. He
was admitted lo practice of law in
.New Jersey and subsequently did
post-graduate work at the Mercer
Beasley School of Law.
After practicing law for nine
years. Father Smith decided lo oil

Joins Military Staff

staff of Marist College has been
augmented by the arrival of Cap-
lain Robert Hendrick Brinson, U.
S. A., (retired 1 .
A Georgian by birth. Captain
Brinson is a graduate of the Unit
ed St-ptes Military Academy at
West Point. Since bis graduation
from II) Academy in 1941, Cap-
lain Brinson lias been stationed at
Camp Lee, Cpmp Holabird and
Fort Devens.

College Ueda, in Rome, Italy,
where be was ordained, on March
13, 1937, by Cardinal Marcbetti-
Selvagianni. the Vicar-General of
His Holiness Pope Pius XT, in the
Cathedral of St. John Lateran, the
mother church of all Christendom.
Following his ordination, Father
Smith volunteered to come to Ihe
Diocese of Charleston, where, be
first served as assistant rector of
(he Cathedral of SI. John the B<Tp-
tist in Charleston. He was appoint
ed auditor of the matrimonial
court of the Diocese and later be
came one of the Pro-Synodal
judges. He also served as assistant
pastor of St. Mary’s Mission,
Yonges Island, and as administra
tor of St. Joseph’s Church, in
Charleston. He came to Aiken as
pastor of that parish and its mis
sions in 1938.
Since being made pastor in
Aiken. Father Smith has aided in
(lie establishment and operation of
the Horse Creek Valley Handicraft
and Welfare Center, conducted by
the Sisters of Our Lady of Christ
ian Doctrine, and is now supervis
ing the construction of a church
near the welfare center and anoth
er church in North Augusta.
As Director of Hospitals for the
Diocese of Charleston, he super
vises the operation of Catholic hos
pitals in Charleston, Greenville.

DIOCESAN TEACHERS
INSTITUTES HELD IN
SAVANNAH AND ATLANTA
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The ninth
annual Teachers’ Institute of the
Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta was
held here on October 18. opening
with Mass celebrated in The Cathe
dral of St. John the Baptist by
Monsignor T. James McNamara.
Superintendent of Schools for the
Diocese.
The morning session of the in
stitute was held at the" Hotel Sa
vannah with Miss Wanda S. Baron,
of Chicago, delivering an address
on the teaching of, vocabulary,
speech diction and poetry. She al
so discussed organization of read
ing units, .social approaches in
leaching the primary grades, type
lessons, round table discussions,
Occupational work and phonetics.
Miss Frances C. Lewis, district
supervisor, of Swainsboro, was the
luncheon speaker, with Brother
Leo Murray, S. M , of the Cathe
dral Latin School, Cleveland, Ohio,
and Father Robert Brennan, (). S.
U., of Savannah, as speakers at the
afternoon session.
A similar program was held on
October 21 at 1 lie Georgian Ter
race Hotel in Atlanta for teachers
of the Catholic schools in north
ern Georgia.
