WII.I, HELP HIS CIIRUCH
The Yugoslavians have sent
enced Archbishop Stepinac to 16
years in prison at hard labor, and
the picture of him will be in the
minds of the members of the
Roman Catholic church in every
country of Earth. It will make con
verts to that church and we have
no doubt that consciousness of his
martyrdom will turn the suffer
ings of the archbishop to ,ioy.—

ONE ASSET IN ITALY
The disastrous, if not uterly
insensate, policy toward Italy pur
sued by the Western Allies since
the surrender of that country and
its acceptance as a co-bclligerenl,
is analyzed and excoriated by
Sumner Welles in his new book.
Where Are We Heading? This
policy was initiated by the British
and carried out under their direc
tion, with American officials, on
Washington’s orders, always play
ing a subordinate and strictly con
formist part. The Allies’ course
was mistaken throughout, in prin
ciple and in detail. It was mon
strously injurious to Italy, and
it damaged, perhaps irreparably
British and American prestige in
that country.
In alt the long and severe casti
gation which Mi-. Welles deals our
government on this subject, but
ope bright spot is discernible. He
says, “There was only one high-
ranking American official who
was able Stoutly, to maintain his
position of entire independence as
an American representative. By
his vision and courage, he not only
made it possible to relieve the
sufferings of many of the people
but likewise preserved for the
United States a measure of recog
nition and of respect on the part
on the Italian public opinion
which otherwise would have been
lost.”
And who was the sole upholder
of America’s good name in pros
trate Italy? “That figure was
Myron Taylor, the President’s per
sonal representative to the Holy
Sec.”
There is irony in this disclosure.
Mr. Taylor’s appointment was the
occasion for a continuous (and
still continuing), clamor that it
would be grossly prejudieal to
American interests and harmful to
our country for decades, even
generations, to come. While our
calamitous errors of policy and
practice in Italy went unnoticed,
She Taylor mission was deplored
and denounced in the bitterest
terms. But now n proves that
having an envoy at the Vatican,
free of the crippling straitjacket
put. on our military and regular
diplomatic representatives in
Italy, was a boon to the United
Slates.
We profited by il. It was our
solitary asset amid tremendous
and perhaps irretrievable losses.—

ALL CHRISTIAN ALLIES
Wherever is a Communist gov
ernment is a n enemy of the Chris
tian religion. That is the signiii-
cance of the arrest of Archbishop
Aloysius Stepinac of the- Roman
Catholic Church by the Yugoslav
ian government of Marshal Tito.
The religion of Christ teaches
the dignity of the individual man.
It teaches his duty and his right
to make the most of the abilities
that were given him by his Creator,
to labor and to achieve, always
with charity to his fellow man; and
always with faith in a life be
yond tin; grave.
Communism’s doctrine is that
man is no more than animal, a
little higher than the beasts of
the field, that there is no god but
the state, the man must and shall
be absorbed, his individuality l ist.
The persecution of Christians in
Yugoslavia, in Russia, in whatever
lands Communism is ascendant, is
no more than was the persecution
of the martyrs when Rome was
still pagan—and “the blood of the
martyrs is the seed of the church.”
Communists in central and east
ern Europe look upon the Catho
lic Church, the “Vatican,” as their
most dangerous enemy. Such it
may be. The lesson for Christians
in the United States is tlvat in cci.*
tral and eastern Europe the Cath
olic Church is their best friend.
Whosoever among Christians,
whether Roman Catholics or Prot
estant, in the United States, shall
instigate and promote, in this time
of crisis, dissension and warfare!
among and between religious de
nominations is the ally of the
Communists. — (The News and
