BRUNSWICK, Ga. — In connec
tion with the observance of the
75th anniversary of the founding
of St. Francis Xavier parish, a de
lightfully interesting and enter
taining program was presented at
the Memorial Auditorum on the
evening of May 16, by pupils of
St. Joseph’s School.
The evening’s program was di
vided into two parts, the first epi
sode depicting Catholicity in
Brunswick between 1840 arid 1879,
the first scene showing the recep
tion of Father Francis X. McCabe,
the first parish priest, with mem
bers of the early Catholic fam
ilies of the city attending. Cos
tuming and staging faithfully car
ried out this early period of the
parish history. The next scene
was a Mother Goose entertain
ment presented by the children of
the parish to help pay the cost of
building a church.
The second episode was a review
of- Catholicity in Brunswick from
1897 to 1947, beginning with the
welcome to Father Patrick J.
Luckie, S. M., the first pastor, af
ter the parish became a charge of
the Marist Fathers, fifty years ago.
The next scene showed in retro
spect the first entertainment by
pupils of St. Joseph’s school, in
1900, and this was followed by a
scene which recalled the farewell
party given Miss Tille Brunegraff,
in 1923, when she was leaving to
enter the convent, as the first
member of the parish with a voca
tion for the life of a Religious. The
final scene showed a family
of 1947 reminiscing over the
events of the past in the life of the
parish.
The accomplishments of the va
rious pastors of St. Francis Xavier
Church were brought out striking
ly as parish history unfolded in
the several scenes of the episodes.
Special tribute was paid to Father
Philip A. Hasson, S. M., for his
part in promoting the growth of
St. Joseph’s School, to Father Leo
F. Ziebarth, S. M., for his part in
the development of* the parish.in
Waycross.
The performance was directed
by Mother Grace Marie, Sister
Agnes Joseph, Sister Aloysia and
Sister Roberta Marie, of the Sis
ters of St. Joseph of Carondelet,
with the assistance of members of
the Parent-Teacher Association.
