Redemptorist Fathers
Plan to Buy Property
Atop Lookout Mountain
(Special to The Bulle'in)
DALTON. Ga. — The ltedemp-
torist Fathers 'serving in North
Georgia have secured an option
upon the buildings and grounds of
the property formerly operated as
the Skylark Club, atop Lookout
Mountain, with the purpose of
converting the former night club
into a church and school.
Negotiations for the purchase
of the property are being handled
'by Father Joseph H.. Driscoll, C.
SS. R . pastor of St. Joseph's
Church in Dalton, with Albert L.
Hodge as his representative anc^
attorney.
Father Driscoll stated that a
two-weeks' option had been ob
tained on the property for $500,
which amount will be applied to
the proposed purchase price of
$22,500 if the transaction is com
pleted. '
The property, which is on the
Scenic Highway on Lookout Moun
tain consists of a stone club lioti-e
building and about four acres of
land. The building it reported to
cost about $61,000 before heating
air-conditioning systems were in
stalled.
Father Driscoll said the Re-
demptorist Fathers expected to
Convert the building temporarily
into a church and later plan to
make it into a school for the Look
out Mountain area, and "that the
plan to purchase the property had
been approved by Bishop Gerald
P. O’Hara of Savannah-Atianta,
who is now serving as Regent of
the Apostolic Nunciature in Ro
mania, and by Father Cornelius
Hoffman, C. SS. R.. of Richmond,
Va., Vice-Provincial of the Re-
demptorist Fathers.
The property is own by Bernard
Fine, of Chattanooga, and was be-
fing operated by a syndicate from
Atlanta until about a month ago
when it was closed after the minis
ter of a church in Lookout Moun
tain had preached a sermon
against the manner in which the
club was being operated, and
several raids had been made on
the club by the civil authorities.
The property was then turned
back to the owner by the lessees.
“IT IS A’ BAD WILL that does not mention God as
a legatee. If we provide for the orphans by leaving
their names as beneficiaries of our charity in the dis
position we make of our worldly goods we are doing
something for God, something for His orphans and much
for pur own soul. God cannot resist the prayer of a
little child whose'angels see the Father’s face in heaven.”
All gifts and legacies intended for the orphans of
St, Mary’s Home should be made payable to the “Female
Orphan Benevolent Society,” which is duly incorporated
under the laws of Georgia. • »
