Monsignor Peter Guilday, veteran
member of the Catholic Univer
sity ol America faculty, author
and widely recognized authority
on Church History, in the Na
tional Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception on the , university
campus.
Monsignor Guilday died at
Providence Hospital here after a
long illness. At his request, the
funeral ceremonies were simple.
There was a low Mass, with no
sermon.
Born on March 25, 1884 . in
Chester, Pa., Monsignor Guilday
began his study for the priest
hood at St. Charles Seminary in
Philadelphia.
At the seminary he followed
lectures ill philosophy, the sci
ences, literature and theology for
five years, and acquired a knowl
edge of Hebrew, German, French,
Spanish and Italian before decid
ing to make history his specialty.
Awarded a scholarship to the Uni
versity of Louisiana, he pursued
Church history there and at the
University of Bonn. He was or
dained at Louvain on duly 11,
1909.
In preparation for his doctor
ate he spent a year of researcl) in
France. Belgium, Spain and Italy,
and another year in London. The
outbreak of World War I found
him in Ireland gathering mater
ial for a volume on Irish colleges
and convents. Upon his return
to the United States in 1914, he
was appointed graduate instruc
tor in Church history at the Cath
olic University.
When the United States entered
the war, he sought to enlist as a
chaplain but was rejected be
cause of poor eyesight. He be
came secretary of the historical
records committee of the National
Catholic War Council—forerunner
of the National Catholic Welfare
Congress—in 1917, and a year la
ter was named assistant district
educational director in the Stu
dents Army Training Corps, with
hea. quarters at Philadelphia.
In J919, he called together some
seventy Catholic writers and stu
dents of history in Cleveland,
where the American Catholic His
torical Association was founded.

founded the Catholic Historical
Jteview.
Monsignor Guilday was decorat
ed by the King of Belgium in 1926
for his work in the restoration of
the war-ruined Louvain Library.
He held degrees from the Uni
versity of Noh'e Dame, Marquette
University, Georgetown Univer
sity, Loyola University of Chicago,
St. Mary’s College, California, and
Mount St. Mary’s College, in
Maryland.

Father Sydney F. Dean has been
appointed chaplain of Greenville
Council, and Father Ronald P.
Anderson has been appointed lec
turer. The new grand knight has
announced that a standing com
mittee chairman and members
will be appointed in the near fu
ture.
State Deputy J. A. Putnam, of
Greenville; Past State Deputy
•Thomas N. Ficklen, of Columbia;
and Father Sydney F. Dean, of
Greenville, formerly chaplain of
the South Carolina Stale Council,
attended the 65th annual K. of C.
convention held in Boston this
month.
J. J. Francis, who served as
treasurer of Greenville Council
for the past three years, assumes
the post, as secretary of the South
Carolina State Council on Sep
tember 1.

He is survived by three brothers
and (wo sisters, one of whom is
Sister M. Pierde, of the Immacu
late Heart of Mary community,
West Chester, Pa.
Bishop J. Carroll McCormick,
Auxiliary of Philadelphia, was the
celebrant of the Mass. Bishop John
M. McNamara. Administrator of
Baltimore and of Washington, and
Bishop Vincent S. Waters of Ral
eigh, were present. Monsignor Pat
rick J. McCormack, rector of 1 li-*
university, officiated at the burial
ritet.
