of Charleston, announced on Sep
tember 1. the following new ap
pointments of clergy for the Dio
cese of Charleston.
Father Edward A. Keller, form
erly assistant pastor of St. John’s
Church, at the Charleston Naval
Base, has been appointed castor
of St. Peter’s Church, Beaufort.
Father A. W. Calner. who has
been serving as assistant pastor
of St. Patrick’s Church in Char
leston, since he was released from
service with the Army Chaplain
Corps, who has been appointed
pastor of Our Lady of Mercy
Church, Charleston. to succeed
Father James J. Guinea, who has
resigned his pastorate on account
of his health, was born in New
Haven, Conn., and after attend
ing Providence College, Provi
dence, R. I., and St. Mary’s Semi
nary, Baltimore, was ordained in
1933, by Bishop Walsh.
Coming to the Diocese of
Charleston, he was first stationed
at St. Peter’s Church, Columbia,
as assistant, and later served at
St. William's Church. Ward, and
in 1938 was named assistant pas
tor of St. Patrick’s Church. Char
leston. where he served until he
enle; ed military service in Octo
ber, 1942. After serving at Camp
Hujen, Texas; at Shaw Field, in
Sumter, and at Jefferson Bar
racks, St. Louis, he went overseas
in November, 1943. After attend
ing the chaplains’ school of the
U. S. Army Air Force at Med-
dington, England, Father Calner
was assigned to the then secret,
Invasion Air Force, later known
as the 9th Air Force. For more
than a year he was chaplain with
the 386th Bombing Group, also
serving the 344th. 409tl) and 416th
Bombardment Groups..
Going to France just before the
Rhine campaign, Father Calner
was assigned to the. 29th Tactical
Air Command, and moved for
ward with the drive through Bel
gium and Holland into Germany.
After Germany’s defeat, he was
stationed in Berlin, Munich and
near Dachau.
He wears the American Thea
tre and the European-African
Middle Eastern campaign rib
bons, with six battle stars for ser-
vi__ in the air offensive over Eu
rope. He holds the Victory
Medal, Presidential Unit Citation,
and Meritorious Service Unit
Plaque.

Seminary, Rochester. N. Y.
! Coming to the Diocese of Char
leston, he was first assigned to St.
Joseph’s Church, Charleston, as

sistant. and for the last five
years has been assistant pastor at
St. John Church, at the Navy
Yard in North Charleston.
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for Sister Herminie, of the
Little Sisters of the Poor, who
died on September 2, were held
hi the chapel of the convent, with
Monsignor Joseph E. Moylan,
4 Vicar General of the Diocese of
Savannah-Atlanta, offering the
Solemn Requiem Mass.
Sister Herminie was born in
Scotland in 1868, and became a
member of the Little Sisters of
the Poor fifty-three years ago.
She had been ' stationed at the
home in SaVannah for the past
[ twenty-seven years.
Father Edward A. Keller, who
will succeed Father Gerald Ernst,
Congr. Orat.,^ as paf-Uir of St.
Peter’s Church, Beaufort, was or
dained in June, 1938. He was
born in Williamsport. Pa., and
after graduating from St. Mary’s
High School, Williamsport, enter-

leston, has been appointed assis
tant pastor of St. Joseph’s Church
here, and will continue to serve
as a member of the faculty of
Bishop England High School,

has been assistant pastor at St.

been appointed assistant pastor of
St. John’s Church at the Charles
ton Naval Base.
Father John A. Simonin, an

Circe Olofson and U. V. Olofson,
of Augusta, and other relatives.

DIES IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mrs. Bes
sie Berne McCue, widow of
Charles F. McCue, died on August
26, funeral services being held
from the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist.
A native of Ireland, Mrs. McCue
had made her home in Savannah
for sixty years.
She is survived by five nieces,
