Charleston Diocesan
Council of Women to
Convene October 25-26

GREENVILLE, S. C. — The an
nual convention of the Charleston
Diocese Council of Catholic Wom
en, which had been scheduled for
October 4 and 5, has been post
poned until October 25 and 26, ac
cording to an announcement made
by Mrs. Jack Kearney, of Green
ville, president of the Diocesan
Council.
All business and social sessions
of the convention will be held at
the Francis Marion Hotel which
has been chosen as headquarters
for the gathering.
Mrs. John Hartnett and Mrs.
Jennings Cauthen, president and
vice-president of the Charleston
Deanery Council, are serving as
co-chairmen of the convention
committee.
Mrs. Kearney outlined the con
vention program as follows: Sat
urday, October 25 — Diocesan
board meeting with luncheon, 1:30
p. m. Registration, 2 p. m. Open
ing session, 4:30 p. m. Evening
session 8:30 p. m. Reception, 10
p. m. Sunday, October 26—Ponti
fical High Mass to be celebrated
at the Cathedra] of St. John the
Baptist by Bishop Emmet M.
Walsh of Charleston, 10:30 a. m.
Luncheon, 1 p. m. Continuation of
business session 3 p. m. Diocesan
board meeting, 5 p. m. Benediction
of the Blessed Sacrament at the
Cathedral 5:30 p. m.
Reprefjpntatives from the Na
tional Council of Catholic Women
from Washington will attend.
Guest speakers of international
renown will be presented on the
convention program, Mrs. Kearney
said.
Cardinal Spellman
Will Officiate at
Actors’ Shrine Rites
LOS ANGELES. — (NC) — His
Eminence Francis Cardinal Spell
man, Archbishop of New York,
will officiate at cornerstone laying
ceremonies for the Shrine of St.
Genesius on the Charles Schwab
estate at Loretto. Pa.,'Oc’ober, 4. it
has been announced here by the
Rev. Walter Plimmer, chaplain,
and Pat O’Brien, screen and radio
star, president of the Genesians, a
group of Catholic actors and ac
tresses.
Plans were discu sed here for
the activation throughout the
country of the Genesian organiza
tion, which takes its name from a
Roman saint of the third century
who was a comedian in the court
of Emperor Diocletian. Father
Plimmer said the Genesians hope
to develop facilities for taking care
of spiritual problems of actors.
The home at Loretto, will be a na
tional retreat house for Catholic
members of the profession, he
said.
Besides Mr. O’Brien, other offi
cers are Maureen O’Hara, vice-
president; George Buck, secretary-
treasurer, and Henry O’Neil,
chairman of the board. Laying of
the cornerstone will be held in
conjunction with the centenary of
the Franciscan Third Order Reg
ular Fathers at St. Francis Col
lege in Loretto, Pa., also being ob
served October 4. The national
actors’ shrine is in the custody of
the Franciscans.
Father Arthur Weltzer
at St. Mary’s, Augusta,
as Assistant Pastor
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Father Arthur
Weltzer, a priest of the Diocese
of Rochester, who has been serv
ing since July as assistant rector
of the Cathedral of Christ the
King, in Atlanta, has been appoint- ,
ed assistant to Monsignor James
J. Grady, V. F., pastor of St.
Mary’s-on-The-IIill Church here,
A native of Rochester, Fath ?r
Weltzer completed his study for
the priesthood at St. Bernard’s
Seminary, Rochester, where he
was ordained i in 1932 by the late
Most Rev. John Francis O’Hern,
D. D., who at that time was Bishop
of Rochester.
Since his ordination Father
Weltzer has served as a member
of the faculty of Aquinas High
School, in Rochester, and as pro
fessor of Latin and Science at
St. Andrew’s Preparatory Semi
nary, Rochester.
FATHER MARCELLUS
GOES TO SAVANNAH
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Father Mar
cellos Cikan. O. S. B., who has
been serving as assistant pastor
at St. Mary’s-on-The Hill Church
here for several months, has been
appointed assistant pastor of the
Blessed Sacrament Church in Sa
vannah.
Father Marcellus is serving in
the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta
on a leave of absence granted by
Abbot Ambrose Andrak, O. S. B.,
of St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle, Il
linois.
Father Marcellus, a priest of
wide experience, has served as a
member of the faculty of St. Pro- |
copius College, and as pastor of a j
parish in Chicago, where he was j
designated by his Abbot to do so- '
cial service work among the poor
of that city. He was active in Red
Cross work and was a member of
the Benedictine Mission Band for
several years.
Father Edgar Bissonette, a priest
of the Diofcese of Hearst, in Cana
da, who has been serving as as
sistant to Father Thomas A. Bren
nan, pastor of Blessed Sacrament
Church in Savannah, has been
named assistant rector of the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist,
to succeed Father Walter Dono
van. who has recently been ap
pointed pastor of the Immaculate
Conception Church. Dublin.
BISHOP ARTHUR HUGHES,
Regent of the Apostolic .Delega
tion to Egypt, has been named
Papal Internuncio to Egypt and
elevated to the titular Arehbis-
horie of Apro. Establishment of
diplomatic ties between the Vati
can and Egypt marks the second
time within a year that a country
of the Middle East has exchanged
envoys with the Holy See. Earlier
this year. Dr. Charles Ilelou, ar
rived at the Vatican to become the
fir;*t Minister of Lebanon to the
Holy See.
SOME 800,000 PEOPLE, many
of whom had crowded into the
Hungarian capital from every part
of the country, filled the streets
of Budapest to honor St. Stephen,
Apostole and first Chrictian King
of Hungary, during the annual
festival. Among those present at
the ceremonies were Prime Min
ister Lajos Dinnyes, representing
the President of the Republic, and
Julius Ortutay, Minister of Educa
tion, representing the Govern
ment, and the entire diplomatic
corps, including U. S. Minister
Seldon Chapin.
