ATHENS, Ga.—Father Francis
Clougherty, O. S. B., who is serv
ing in the Diocese of Savannah-
Atlanta, on leave from St. Pro
copius Abbey, Lisle, 111., has been
appointed moderator of the New
man Club at the University of
Georgia, and will also serve as
assistant pastor of St. Joseph’s
Church here.
Father Francis was ordained, in
1920, at Mount St. Mary’s Semi
nary, Emmitsburg, Md., as a secu
lar priest, for missionary work in
China. In 1928, he joined the
Order of St. Benedict, and for
some years held an important post
at the Catholic University of Peip
ing, China.
He is a close friend of His
Eminence Thomas Cardinal Tien,
Archbishop of Peiping, and of
.Archbishop Paul Yu Pin. "Father
Francis knows China well, and is
held in high regard by the Chinese
government and the Chinese peo
ple.

ther Francis holds the degrees of
A. B., LL.D., and Litt. D. While in
China he was chancellor of Fu
Jen University in Peiping, founded
the Pei Wen Academy at Kaifeng,
in Honan Province, and held va
rious academic posts in that re
gion. From 1937 to 1941, while
stationed at St. Benedict’s Mon
astery, in Kaifeng, he was chair
man of the Honan International
Relief Committee and vice-chair
man of the Province’s Govern
ment Relief to Officers and 1
Wounded Soldiers. |
Father Francis established and .
directed thirteen refugee camps in
Kaifeng ■ alone in addition to .
twelve dressing stations for j
wounded soldiers. From 1941 to
1945, he was interned by the Jap-1
anese at camps at Kaifeng, Weish- !
ien and Peiping. In January, 1946, j
the highest Chinese honor given to
a foreigner, the Order of the Glo
rious Star, First Class, was con
ferred on him by Generalissimo
Chiang Kai-Shek, in recognition of
his "distinguished educational and
war-relief work in China.”
Additional honors conferred
upon him by the Chinese Govern,-
ment were the Victory Medal and
the title of honor, “Chung Jen”
(“Honor Man”). He also served as
counselor to the Chinese delega
tion to the historic Consistory at
the Vatican at which the first na
tive Chinese was elevated to the
rank of Cardinal.
Father Francis succeeds Father
Hugh Taylor, O. S. B., of St. Ber
nard’s Abbey, Cullman. Ala., who '
has been assistant pastor of St. |
Joseph’s Church here for three
years. Father Hugh has been ap- '
pointed assistant pastor of St.
Thomas More Church, Decatur.
John J. Powers, Ph.D., of Pitts- j
field, Mass., is a new member of
the faculty of the University of
Georgia.
Joseph P. McMahon, of Athens,
graduate assistant in the School of
Business Accounting, also became
a member of the University facul-
ty by his recent appointment as
assistant director of the Bureau of
Easiness Research.
Due to the illness of Fred Von
Kamp, of Savannah, president of
the Newman Club at the Universi
ty of Georgia, Paul “Blawie, of
Bridgeport, Conn., the vice-presi
dent, will preside at the first
meeting of the club for the cur
rent scholastic year, to be held
September 30.
Father J. Robert Brennan, pas
tor of St. Joseph's Church, spoke
on "Catholic Education” at the
September meeting of the parish
Council Of Catholic Women.

STREET PREACHING TOUR
WAYNESVILLE, N. C.—(NC)—
Father John A. O’Brien, C. S. C.,
professor at the University of
Notre Dame and author of several
books, teamed up with a Notre
Dame student, Spaldon Under
wood, Jr., to conduct a street
preaching tour through one of the
least Catholic areas in the United
States.
The tour covered the section of
North Carolina around St. John’s
Mission here. Comprising the
eight western counties of the
state, a territory about the size
of Ireland, with a population of
1,000,000, the mission has only ten
native Catholics, according to its
pastoh, Father Ambrose F. Rohr-
bacher.
