In the body of our Catholic
teachings we have a beautiful doc
trine called “The Communion of
the Saints”. The beauty of this
doctrine consists in the har
monious offering of prayer by the
Church Triumphant in heaven, the
Church Suffering in purgatory and
the Church Militant on earth for
tlie glory of the One, true God
through the salvation of souls.
All of us have been acquainted
in life with a number of the souls

who, to the best of our knowledge,

Too few of us, however, are

The Benedictine Monks of St.
Augustine’s AFbey, Ramsgate, in
their revised, fourth edition of
THE BOOKS OF SAINTS., offer
us an easy means of making new
friends among the elect of God.
Here, listed* alphabetically, in
one volume, convenient to handle,
are the names of over nine thou
sand saints, each with a short,
authenticated, biographical sketch.
Within the six hundred odd pages
we are offered the wealth of our
Christian heritage, amassed, since
the time of Christ, by the flower
of God's creation. The text of each
sketch confines itself to the main
events in the saint’s life. Where,
because of popularity, legendary
material is included, it is noted as
such. A final hundred pages lists
by date the feasts of these saints.
The large, clear type and the
good quality of the paper enhances
this excellent, up-to-date, Catholic
reference work, as necessary to
the Catholic library as any
biographical dictionary. For the
home library, where space is
limited, and full length biographies
of the saints are scarce, THE
BOOK OF THE SAINTS is an
essential.
WHERE IS TRUTH? by Eliza
beth T. Britt (Longmans), $3.00
(Reviewed by
(Rev. Valentine A. Becher, S. M.)
Among the many books of
apologetics on the market today
there has appeared a fresh flower
to attract the gaze of the inquisi
tive . WHERE IS TRUTH? by
Elizabeth T. Britt, a Religious of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus, unfolds
petal by petal the arguments prov
ing that the Catholic Church alone
is Ihe custodian of truth in its en
tirety.
The matter is that to be expected
in a book proclaiming the necessity
of Christianity as embodied in the
teachings of the Catholic Church.
Starting with the true cause and
purpose of life, Mother Britt pro
ceeds to re'velation and the sources
of truth, and from hence to Christ
and the Church He founded. But
the author, throughout her fifteen
chapters, gives us no mere state
ment of facts followed by their
reasonable proofs. From the
initial letter to the final period
there flows a smooth, readable
piece of Catholic literature, pro
found enough to hold the interest
of the scholar, yet plain enough to
instruct the high school student.
The many apt qoutations range
from the Roman historians and the
early Fathers of the Church to
our modern Catholic writers and
Pope Pius XII. So well have these
quotations been woven into the
text that they add to, rather than
detract from the evenness of the
presentation.
Study clubs will welcome this
most useful manual of apologetics
for its lists of questions, study
topics and reference readings
which follow each chapter. For
those unfamiliar v'ith the Catholic
meanings of terms used, the glos
sary near the end of the book
should prove helpful. To add
further to the value of her work,
Mother Britt included an adequate
bibilography of Catholic books with
a special section devoted to the
Protestant Reformation. The last
few pages are given over to a
carefully compiled index.
WHERE IS TRUTH? is a book
for Ihe prospective convert and
for the convert instructor. It is
recommended for the apologetics
section of every Catholic library
” -om high school on up.
TWELVE TALES OF 1 HE LIFE
AND ADVENTURES OF SAINT
IMAGJNUS, edited by Frances
Margaret McGuire (Sliced and
Ward), $1.50
(Reviewed by Eileen Hall)
This one, to fully appreciate,
you’ll want to 'read aloud to the
family. They’ll all listen atten
tively, from the youngsters who
stop you to question the meaning
of such words as “cajolery or
sophistry’’ (better have your dic
tionary handy), page 41, to the
perverse’ adults who quite un
ashamedly enjoy the poor Prior’s
discomfiture in the delightful pic
ture on page 50 (just one of many
provocative drawings by Betty
Arnolt) and in the immediately
following pages of text.
Was ever such a charming mix
ture of delicious humor and real,
heart-warming piety combined in
one slim volume before? We’ve
never run across it, if it was.
St. Imaginus is as lovable,
with His Innumerable very human
virtues (chief among which, per
haps, is his captivating humility),
as any honest-to-goodness, flesh-
and blood saint you ever met—
either in books or in priestly cas
sock of the Church Militant.
We can’t conceive of a more
effective and painless way of in
stilling profound spiritual truths

If you aren’t already thoroughly
persuaded of that fact. Father
Neubert will remove your last
lingering doubts.

' (Reviewed by Eileen Hall)
I wish every high school boy
and girl, not to mention their
elders, could be induced to read
“Queen of Militants”, not hastily
and superficially, but as a book
for meditation. And then, if they
shared our impression, they’d feel
they could profit immensely by
repeating that medi< stive reading
again and again.
It’s written for young people—
the young in heart, at least—for
young hearts which thirst for high
adventure and have, perhaps, be
gun to learn there’s no more stir
ring adventure than “the Chris
tian life”, “combat for Christ”—•
(many names there are for that
age-old, all-important quest).
With plentiful quotation from
St. Grignion de Montfort, Father
Chaminade and other fervent ser
vants of Mary, the author amply
and convincingly explains what he
