orating the seventy-fifth anniver
sary of the founding of St. Peter’s
Parochial School, a Solemn High
Mass, Coram Episcopo, was Cele
brated at St. ‘ Peter’s Church, on
December 7, by Monsignor Mar
tin C. Murphy. V. F., the pastor,
with Bishop Emmet M. Wals’i
of Charleston, presiding.
Also present in the sanctuary
were Abbot Vincent G. Taylor, O.
S. B., of the Abbey-Nullius of
Belmont, Belmont, N. C.. and Mon
signor Andrew Keene Gwynn, P.
A., pastor of St. Mary’s Church,
Greenville.
Among the clergy assisting in
the sanctuary was Father Louis
E. Forde, a native of Columbia,
now chaplain at Providence Hos
pital here, who attended St. Peter’s
School in 1872 and is the only sur
viving man who went to the school
when it first opened.

BISHOP WALSH
DELIVERS SERMON
In the sermon which he deliver
ed at the Mass. Bishop Walsh
stressed the value of religious
education, declaring:
“During the first fifty years of
the life of our Republic, the reli
gious school was the typical
American school, but with the rise
of the public school system, the
difficult problem that confronted
public authority in a nation of
divided religious alliance was
solved by banning the formal
teaching of religion from the cur
riculum With thg pas-ing of a
century of such education many
thoughtful Americans believe the
solution was hasty and short
sighted.

Bishop Thomas
J. Toolen of Mobile has announc
ed that His Holiness Pope Pius
XII has honored three priests of
that Diocese by elevating them
to the dignity of Domestic Prelate
with the title of Right Reverend
Monsignor.
The three Alabama priests hon
ored are Monsignor James ‘ P.
Byrnes, pastor of the Church of
the Little Flower, in Mobile; Mon
signor Francis J. McCormack, pas
tor of St. Anthony’s Church, Bir
mingham, and Monsignor Waller
H. Royer, pastor of St. Matthew’s
Church, Mobile.
Monsignor Byrnes and Monsig-
nor Royer are natives of Mobile,
Monsignor Byrnes being a brother
of Monsignor Leo F. Byrnes, Sup
erintendent of Schools of the Dio
cese of Mobile. Monsignor lloyer
has two brothers in the priesthood,
Father Joseph Royer, pastor of
SI. Stephen’s Church, Pensacola,
Fla., and Father George Royer,
pastor of St. James Church, Gads
den, Ala.
Monsignor McCormack is a na
tive of Milton, Mass., and he and
Monsignor Byrnes and MonsLuor
Royer all completed their study
for the priesthood at Mount -,(..
