Building Suffers
Damage by Fire
(Special to The Bulletin)
CHARLESTON, S. C.—The
Knights of Columbus hall on
Calhoun Street was damaged
by fire of undetermined origin on
the morning of November 28, and
according to Grand Knight Daniel
J. Sullivan, a preliminary estimate
indicated that damages would
amount to between $20,000 and
$25,000.
Fire Chief Norman G. Olsen said
all the doors and windows of the
three-story brick structure were
locked and bolted when firemen
responded to the alarm. Firemen
found the roof and false ceiling
in flames and after gaining en
trance poured wate'r into the sec
ond floor and onto the roof in
the rear. About half an hour after
the fire started, flames nearly
fifty feet high, shot into the sky
from the roof in flic rear and
dense black smoke arose 200 feet.
All that remained of the rear
portion of the ceiling and roof
were charred beams and a pile of
twisted tin. Fire was confined to
roof and ceiling and a section of
the second floor.
Mr. Sullivan revealed that he
was the last person to leave the
stage of the recreation room on
the second floor after a party on
Thanksgiving night.
Oil paintings of past grand
knights of Bishop Lynch Council,
dating back to 1900, were found
undamaged in a room at the front
of the third floor.
The building was partly covered
by insurance, Mr. Sullivan stated,
and he declared that the mort
gage on the building had been
burned at a ceremony held last
June.
Chief Olsen complimented the
firemen for their efforts, under
dangerous conditions, in bringing
the fire under control quickly and
thus preventing greater damage.
