Two Papago Indian children were the first contributors to the "Give
Thanks By Giving" campaign conducted by War Relief Services—
National Catholic Welfare Conference in 115 dioceses of the United
States. Martin Capon and Sally Encinas of the San Xavier del Bac
Mission Church in the Tucson Diocese hand their cans of foodstuffs
to Gregory Moran, lay chairman of the drive there, just two hours
after the campaign opened. More than 40,000,000 cans have been
donated throughout the nation according to early reports. NC Photos)

CONDUCT WASTE PAPER
CAMPAIGN IN COLUMBIA
COLUMBIA, S. C.—The collec
tion of scrap paper under the
auspices of the Parent-Teacher As
sociation of St. Peter's School was
most successful under the leader
ship of Mrs. S. J. DeBorde, Mrs)
J. M. Brennan, Mrs. W. P. Done-
lan, Mrs. W. N. Cooper and Mrs.
F. S. Colman. An ice cream party
was given the pupils of the class
that brought in the largest amount
of paper.

(Special to The BulleUa.
GEORGETOWN. S. C.—The
Holy Name Society of St. Mary’s
Church, at its meeting on Decem
ber 8th, completed plans for the
erection of a life-size Christmas
crib on Highmarket Street, adja
cent to the church.
The crib, which will be pattern
ed after that which is erected each
year at St. Peter’s Church, Colum
bia. wil have in a living ox and
donkey as well as a number of
sheep, to add realism to the repre
sentation of the scene in the stable
at Bethlehem. The figures of the
Blessed Mother and St. Joseph,
and those of the Shepherds and
angels, are full-scale figures of
plywood, painted in oils by Ser
geant Edward Schwartz, of the
U. S. Army Air Force.
Materials used ir. the construc
tion of the manger scene are the
gifts of local building concerns,
and the living animals will be
provided by one of the large plan
tation near Georgetown.
A local amusement equipment
dealer has offered the use of a
reproducing instrument to provide
a continous background of soft
Christmas music, and all the light
ing effects will be installed by an
other firm in this city.
The actual work of construction
was done by men of St. Mary’s
parish, and the completed scene
will first be displayed on Christ
mas Eve, shortly before the hour
for midnight Mass. It wil remain
during (he holidays.
Joseph McCaffrey, president of
the Holy Name Society, appointed
Thomas E. Isaac, Joseph Roe,
William Howard, Hugh Patnck
Costello, and A1 Wewer as a .con-
(ruction^ committee, and Dr.
James Horan, Charles Trunks and
Alfred Joseph as the materials
procurement committee.
