1948 Is Year for Grave Decisions,
Pope Pius Tells Diplomatic Corps
(Radio, N. C. W. C. News Service)
VATICAN CITY. — The year
1948 "undoubtedly will be a year
of very grave decisions,” His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII declared, and
then added that he did not share
the “views of those who in antici
pation regard the new year as one
of the most calamitous of history.”
Speaking in French, the Pontiff
addressed members of the diplo
matic corps accredited to the Holy
See. There are 14 Ambassadors, 18
Ministers and seven Charges d'Af-
faires so accredited. The audience
marked a departure from the cus
tom of previous years when the
Holy Father received the diplo
mats individually for exchange of
Ne w Year greetings.
"At the beginning of this year
1948. whose prospect is filled with
anxious uncertainties,” the Pope
said, "We see as ;S in spirit, gath
ered around Us the great family
of the peoples of whom you, the
messengers, are representatives.
Our ardent prayer ascends to God

for the happiness, prosperity, wel
fare and progress of these peoples.
“But even those nations which
are not represented here and not
absent from Our thoughts. Our
rolicitude extends to them, and
they, too, are the object of Our
constant prayer.
“Now, more than ever, all fur-
aoeing and disinterested persons
are convinced of the indivisibility
of the peace. However formidable
may be the obstacles to the reali- j
zation of this ideal, they will not 1
be able to discourage Us. Fully ,
confident, We refuse to share the '
views of those who in anticipation, |
regard the new year as one of the
most calamitous of history. No, |
this undoubtedly will be a year of : q-
• very grave decisions, perhaps ir- '
revocable decisions, a year in
which, perhaps as never before,
the v/orld will find itself at the
crossroads.
“Nevertheless, We will continue
to hope and pfay, and will con
tinue to remind and beseech those
who will play their part, not to
lose sight of the indivisibility of
peace and not to forget that the in-
